What a great race that was, one of the all time classics. And what an amazing race Corbiere ran under lumps of weight to finish 3rd. I bet on him again after I won my first nice bet on Corbiere the year before

@@gazowenowen250 Roman General, rank outsider, tipped up at 13th, and most annoyingly they recorded it as Unseated Rider! There was green on his headpiece....and mine!! Very sad about this year. Good Luck.

@@malcolmwallace2317 Wow Malcolm, I was there that year and the standard of racing over the 3 days was Fab. May I ask you' what it was like to ride in the National and did you have fear of the fences .Also what was your biggest race achievement. @@glynnevans1851 It was a privilege for someone like me, a 37 year old 7lb claimer, to ride in the great race and I've always been grateful to owner, Brod Munro-Wilson for allowing me that privilege. Roman General was a great jumper but had pulled up in his previous race, so our plan was to get as far as we could without getting in anyone's way - which we didn't! I wasn't so fussed about the fences to be honest as I'd ridden at Badminton Horse Trials which I considered more worrying than Aintree's - as it turned out, I went clear around Badminton and fell off at Aintree, so that shows what a great judge I am! Long may the great race continue.

@@malcolmwallace3176 Hello sir, Thank you for your interesting reply and if I may say you sound modest. I remember Brod he was quite a character and was interviewed regular by Julian Wilson and The skilful Chris Collins' did you ever meet Mr John Carden who sadly was a regular at Walton Hospital during Aintree Grand National week. Also did you know John Lawrence a true gentleman and was very modest. My first Grand National was 1967 ' say no more and Aintree Foxhunters 1972 the Momentous Credit Call . My boy hood racing hero's were Terry Biddlecombe and Fred Winter. Favourite other race course is Stratford especially Horse Hound Gold Cup day.May I ask did you ever ride in this race. I remember as a kid watching this and as my dad had bet on Hello Dandy I made a wish that he would win. What a feeling when he did!

My Dad backed this one as well. We'd videotaped the race, and I lost count the number of times he watched that video. I reckon he wore the tape out! Happy memories!

Tremendous race,what a sight to treasure.Not just the fences that have changed at Aintree.The famous "old turf" that once walked like a magic carpet even in drought conditions has been grown out by the ubiquitous rye grass.

Grittar in all of his National's and Foxhunter success always took beeches at its steepest drop such a brave and underrated horse. Won in 82, 5th in 83 and 10th in 84.

...back in the day commentators expressed surprise when there were no fallers.....not any more........and surely now with those plastic core fences now well established at Aintree that 23 completed record will be beaten soon.....

the 1984 race has got to be my least favourite national from 60 to 89, the race is too similar to the boring nationals we get today, going too fast huge amount of finishers and poor old earthstopper collapsing at the end just like hear the echo

Why, because 23 horses came home?- Do you want to see stricken horses all over the course?. In 2001 only two finished in the mud and McCoy and Walsh remounted and hacked Pappillion and Blowing Wind home together for the minor places .Every year is different. 1984 had a very good field of of sound jumping horses.Regarding Earth Stopper's collapse that was due to a heart defect; the going, and the speed may have had nothing to do with it. I love to see them stream over Bechers. Remember the terrible falls of Dark Ivy and Winter Rain - horrible!

i want to watch a steeplechase horses goin a sensible gallop jumping bigger fences than today, what i dont want to see are 40 horses goin flat out finishing absolutely exausted jumping small soft fences, it s also makes the race very boring

Still a bit miffed as to why Caroline Beesley didnt ride Eliogarty and instead a relatively unknown amateur was put up. Beesley rode him in all other races and knew the horse very well.

Earthstopper sadly collapsed and died after finishing fifth. Watching from the Melling Road onwards on the final circuit it looks like Richard Rowe really overuses his whip on the horse and I wonder if that contributed to Earthsopper's sad death..
