It's high time the BBC made their archives more accessible though. There are certain 'greats' from years ago where you can barely find a 3 minute clip on KZbin now. I think the BBC archives are probably their most prized asset & people both in the UK and abroad would pay good money for accessing that. Furthermore, in a world of Netflix and Amazon Prime, selling rights to different broadcasters for programmes seems a decade out of date (although it's still important admittedly). Notwithstanding that, in a world of Netflix and Amazon Prime, access to the BBC archives would also be very welcome & refreshing.

It's one of the few (sets of!) channels I watch, and the only one I'll watch live. My patience with advertising ran out some years past, when it became insidious on independent channels. Until then, their typical ad breaks were reasonable and enough time to make a drink or take a "pit stop". But now it's throughout the various programmes, even on "terrestrial" TV. I can't even watch Channel 4 live, and that's a channel whose productions I usually enjoy; at least the "grown up" ones, none of that dumb reality stuff. Despite being unable to work due to disability, I actually don't mind paying the licence fee. It's no different from subscriptions for other sources, and it's actually cheaper than the vast majority of them. And even when you pay them sub fees, you usually get adverts too. I'm glad to be able to tune into national or local radio when I travel, knowing I'll get a similar standard of production throughout the country, and "time-predictable" important parts of the broadcasts like news, traffic and weather. Thanks to BBC 2, my early years with the Open University were assisted by the long-mocked, but extremely useful programming! It helped me gain my first degree, and I'm truly grateful. No, the Beeb is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but its quality of programming is, even for the lowest common denominator "entertainment", usually of the highest order. And despite what those who only see KZbin clips, or just pick up their personal opinions from other people on social media, the news programming is as unbiased as it's possible to be (bearing in mind it's run by humans). The rest of my life would be distinctly poorer without the BBC as a whole.

Yes, the BBC is worth every penny and so much more. News, Entertainment, Education and there are still philistines who can barely articulate their dislike for this almost free service because they object to paying a tiny license fee for thousands of hours of laughter, tears and the gamut of emotions, thinking and experiences in between the two. I grew up, developed with the BBC, who contributed broadly to my education. I will always think of the Beeb with great affection and gratitude.

From a Canadian point of view , I just cannoy understand how you can have doubts about the BBC's importance. It created the best high quality , historical accurate , educative TV series in the whole english speaking countries ( and most of the world) I've been bedridden for many years now , I had the opportunity to watch thousands of TV series , and nothing come close as the quality , details and great actors you can see in the BBC's productions . I know British people like to complain about the weather , but please try to appreciate what jewels you have . Because when you live in a country with no history and a lack of creativity and interest to invest in creative works ... quality entertaining is everything .

We complain about the weather because it's the one subject that affects everyone. Talking about religion and politics, particularly in public, or worse, with someone you've just met, is (or at least was until recently) considered to be highly inappropriate. But the weather is neutral. You can be the Queen or living on the streets but you'll always have the weather in common! And because of where the UK is situated, it's actually one of the hardest places in the world to predict the weather for. We can get Saharan winds, Siberian snow, Arctic storms... And currently hardly any rain and constant overwhelming heat! I hope that explains the perceived national obsession. It's not really one, but it's the safest opening topic of conversation!
@sulalee7413

I get what you are saying but it's rather a sweeping statement, as most do value it. 😊 It's only some people in the UK who don't grasp its value. They tend to be the sorts of people who think they watch things on the internet so the BBC has nothing to do with them and so they resent the small fee. Think of all the people who use it daily, who live alone, the older people, the lonely people, the people who don't have easy access to the net, they value it, well most people in the UK know it's a great service. 👍

When the BBC starts asking the questions that need answers instead of following a set narrative, I'll start watching again. When the BBC holds politicians and leaders in business, NHS, education, banking to account, I'll watch again. When the BBC stops preaching and recognises that we are not stupid in need of educating to their 'standards' and have free will to have our own opinions which are equally valid, I'll watch the BBC again. It has lost its way. And this institution once held up as a beacon in television around the world, trusted by millions has now fallen. It's not for the the amazing British people, it's biased, it's following a woke agenda, it's not reporting on world events that need to be aired, it underestimates the intelligence of the British public, it's a shell of its former glory. And this makes me very, very sad.

As a Canadian, here’s what I have to say: Woke agenda is a bit of a stretch. While I respect having your opinion, I seriously do not see your response fitting in well in this post. The BBC isn’t the best corporation on this earth. NO ONE IS. The BBC is a public service corporation inhabited by commonplace British people from all sides of life and all factions and all families, and is supposed to be a pillar of your British identity. Your programming quality is unmatched, your journalistic integrity unparalleled. It actually allows you to think. The BBC isn’t pushing a “We’re right all the time” line. This is a company that is supposed to represent the British populace through television, and it’s either ignorance or something that makes us not pay attention to that diversity. So sure, the BBC isn’t perfect now. But when was it? Do we just remember their idents only as the best of BBC then, and not the turmoil and controversy it has faced repeatedly, including now? If anything, it really needs us to save it. And we should answer that call. Happy 100th Birthday to the British Broadcasting Corporation. (1922-2022)

Er, @@sulalee7413, what exactly are you drivelling on about? I'm from the U.K. and am most definitely not a multimillionaire. Furthermore where I live I can't obtain a television signal therefore I don't need a television licence. I was informed about this by a very nice gent from TV Licensing when he came to my address over 6 years ago when I first moved here. All of this is quite legal and commonsense dictates that if I can't obtain a television signal either via an external aerial, satellite dish etc then why pay for any of them? This doesn't mean to say that I can't watch any of the terrestrial television channels that are available - including ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 because I have free subscriptions to each of those. The only terrestrial channel that I can't legally watch is the B.B.C. but even then I can quite freely watch any of their videos online through here on KZbin. I also have paid subscriptions to Netflix and Britbox so all of their programmes, series, films etc are readily available to me online. Like yourself I have no liking for any advertising in any form therefore when I'm watching any of the programmes that I choose to access I mute any ads on all of those terrestrial channels that I'm subscribed to and fortunately neither Netflix nor Britbox have ads so I don't have the same problem with them, do I? In essence if other people were made aware of their legal rights and didn't have any of the equipment to obtain television signals - most especially from the B.B.C. - then they'd be in exactly the same circumstances as myself, wouldn't they? Neither the Government, the B.B.C. nor TV Licensing will ever announce this fact to the entire U.K. population otherwise they'd financially lose out, wouldn't they?

Using Jimmy Reid to promote the oneness of the BBC is an insult to his memory, he would be turning in his grave. He always spoke out on inclusion and for me the BBC no longer is an inclusive, unbiast institution.

Why do you think the tory party is right wing, when they haven't undone a single piece of social legislation put in place by the labour government that came before them, instead adding more to it? Theres one party in this country, they just wear different coloured ties.

@@duvalietheswift4787 what kind of bubble are you living in?! Have you not been paying attention?! Just look-up what the Tories have done over the last 12 years (and historically) around pretty much any issue you can think of and notice how it either: serves corpos, deregulates food/water/goods/services to our detriment, sells-off public services/utilities, harms workers, lowers wages, harms the environment, makes corruption easier, panders to cultural reactionaries with US-style non-issues, sabotages the NHS and restricts the rights of the general populace to demonstrate etc. I mean, take your pick! Honestly. You can't possibly be this misinformed.
