Mike Love at 10:10 - " you can let the past screw with your head for a lifetime or you can say all we have is right now ".Sums up Mike Love's life view . Once he made big money with the surfing/hot rod songs it was then all about not letting go of the formula. He fought against Pet Sounds and Smile because he was afraid the Beach Boys would lose what they had. Mike Love was always a right now kind of guy... and not too many years from right now he will be forgotten. Brian Wilson who had the past screw with his head for a lifetime will leave a body of work that will live forever.

The entire band, except for Bruce, was against the idea of Pet Sounds and SMiLE. It wasn't until they were given critical praise that they saw that it was the way to go, which is why they left behind the surf stuff until the mid-'70s.
@ComeOnIsSuchAJoy5 жыл бұрын
And, ironically, Mike's been trying to save face ever since by saying he wasn't as against those albums as has been claimed in the past. _Smile_ having been abandoned was one of the maddening things to have happened in rock history. Had he actually been able to finish it and release it back in the day - if you've heard the belatedly finished 2004 version - it would've blown _Sgt. Pepper_ out of the water (an album which I've never considered that brilliant in the first place). You can't put a price on artistry... and that's something money-obsessed hacks like Mike will never understand. : P

Enrico Sanchez Interstingly, not in Europe. They loved Pet Sounds in Britain. The record label in the US failed to promote it and undercut it's sales by releasing a "best of" Beach Boys album 2 months after Pet Sounds was released. Back then there was no social media to self promote, the company could make or break it, and they short sightedly chose to break it.

Only problem in the historical look back section here is that Brian was onto SMiLE well before the Beatles even conceived of Sgt. Pepper's. He already had the bulk of the songs written and had begun sessions with the wrecking crew by August '66. Sgt. Pepper's didn't start recording until November and the "concept" behind it wasn't developed until February '67. Not only that, but compared to the concept(s) governing SMiLE, Pepper's is kinda weak, honestly. And that's not to denigrate Sgt. Pepper's in the slightest. It's an absolutely brilliant work of art. I'm just saying if you're going to compare the two...

Yeah, I've never understood the obsession with _Sgt. Pepper_ . It's not even the best Beatles album, as far as I'm concerned ( _Rubber Soul_ , _Revolver_ , the White Album, and _Abbey Road_ all being superior, IMO). It's mostly let down by Paul's rather unremarkable tunes, like "With a Little Help from My Friends," "Getting Better," "Fixing a Hole," "She's Leaving Home," and "Lovely Rita." The best song he wrote for the album didn't even end up on the album ("Penny Lane"). _Smile_ would've blown that album out of the water, had Brian been given the support needed to see it through to its completion back in the day, rather than belatedly doing so 37 years later. : /

Actually he had the worst voice of the entire group. The reason Mike sang lead on many of the early hits was in part because he couldn’t play an instrument. Brian being the nicest and most sincere guy in the room, gave him lead vocal responsibilities. He was after all the Wilsons’ cousin. No one knew at that time that money and profit would become the driving forces behind the decisions Mike would make later. Decisions that would help send Brian’s fragile psyche damaged by mental illness into the abyss.
@ComeOnIsSuchAJoy5 жыл бұрын
Gimme a break. Mike's nasally voice was hardly a driving force. Plus, he only ever wrote one great song for the group completely on his own ("Big Sur"). His obsession with commercial success would eventually lead them to become a parody of themselves, which is basically what they've been since the late '70s (barring this 50th anniversary gig). : P
