Little fun fact: "Best Day Ever" was written (or co-written) by Andy Paley, who's done a lot of work with Brian Wilson during his first solo album, and on an unfortunately aborted Beach Boys reunion album in the 1990s.

That's awesome lmao. There's a few production choices in Best Day Ever (the song specifically) that call back to Pet Sounds like the reverb palm muted guitars and flute lines in the verses that sort of follow the verse melody like in "I'm Waiting For The Day" I knew some elements in that song somehow sounded familiar!

I think most of them worked really well and were funny except for the ones for Carl and The Passions and Holland. I think "The power within!" would make more sense for Carl and The Passions cause of the stuff about TM and " We have technology!" would have worked for Holland cause of all the Moog and synths.
@thepaperbasket51284 жыл бұрын
I actually wanted to use "we have technology" for Summer in Paradise, 'cause they really overdid the electronic stuff on there quite a bit, but forgot about it when actually putting it together. Still bugs me I screwed that up. I can't really see 'the power within' working with Carl and the Passions, since it's really only that one song and even that doesn't have a really trippy vibe. I could see the Holland skit working with Carl and the Passions too, because CatP is probably the album with the most soloing. I chose the scene because on CatP The Beach Boys were trying to find a new sound which resulted in some stuff that felt kinda rough and 'barbaric' in a sense. I get the confusion over Holland, I could have probably picked a better scene, though not so sure about "We have technology", as I made Mt. Vernon and Fairway a seperate clip, which contains a lot more Synth than the main album. My basic idea for the clip was just that Holland was one of the 'rockier' records in their career and closed off an incredible string of albums with an absolute peak moment, just like that music scene in Spongebob closed off an incredible string of seasons with an incredible scene, after which both The Beach Boys and Spongebob would see a huge quality drop.

Pretty good assessment, though some clips of course work for more than just a handful of tracks, and some don't reference the music as much as the circumstances or the cover art. Outside of those, I'd add Keep An Eye on Summer and In the Parking Lot to Shut Down, Girls on the Beach to All Summer Long, take off Forever from Sunflower and put This Whole World instead (though a lot kinda fit), I'd add He Come Down to Carl and the Passions and maybe Leaving This Town to Holland. Also, Stan Love suing Brian? I don't think that ever happened. Also, you especially nailed Wild Hone, those were pretty much the exact three songs I thought of.

Brian Wilson drove himself (and his band mates) crazy trying to make the "perfect" album. He micromanaged literally EVERY aspect of the album to the point where he became unbearable to work with. The album became increasingly overdue and overbudgeted to the point where Capitol stepped in and production came to a screeching halt, dashing Brian's hopes to release another critical masterpiece and leading him further down the mental rabbit hole.

@@dimthecat9418 Yes and no, kinda. A truncated (see: half-assed) version containing only a few of the original sessions plus hastily re-recorded versions of other songs was released as Smiley Smile (3:09) in 1967. A complete, from-the-ground-up re-recording was released as Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE in 2004. The original 1967 sessions (or at least what was left of them) were compiled for the SMiLE Sessions box set in 2011, with the first disc (which is also standalone version released on CD and vinyl) containing what could've (approximately) been the album proper had it originally come out.

@thepaperbasket51284 жыл бұрын
Okay, Shut Down Vol. II: Just had a bunch of songs that had a vibe along that line: The Warmth of the Sun, Don't Worry Baby, Why do Fools Fall in Love, half of In The Parkin' Lot, Keep an Eye on Summer. 20/20: The title of the album is a joke about eye vision, and the cover and sleeve design is also designed like a vision test. The scene I chose is a nod to that and not to the actual music on the album. Holland: One of their most Rock-heavy albums and also just one of their most epic albums, felt like it deserved an epic clip. A lot of people don't understand that one apparently and I didn't even think that one was so unclear. Love You: Brian is back in the studio and writing all the music all alone, making for an atmosphere that is almost frightening in its colorfulnes and quirkines. M.I.U.: IIRC that was the last one I put together and the one I had the least ideas for. Here's how I explained what I did there on Reddit (though I'll admit it's kind of a stretch): Spongebob here is Brian and Squidward is Mike. M.I.U. Album feels to me like Mike (and probably the others, too, but he was obviously the most involved) on that album wanted Brian to write like his old innovative self (hence how we got Brian singing some falsetto again), while Brian was simply not able to write anything out of the ordinary at that time. We got My Diane and She's Got Rhythm, which are nice but nothing that breathtaking, other than that a lot of inoffensive and boring stuff. In the same sense, Squidward is trying to have Spongebob, who had previously created stunning marble statues with the wave of his hand, to create art again, but Spongebob is just unable to not follow the book.
