$8 is a bit steep - just wait several decades until KZbin. Unfortunately so many great BB songs were never played on US FM radio. Fortunately we now have the interwebs.

Probably. Definitely in the top but, there's a few that are so amazing, it would be fair to call each one the best You guys all forgot their version of We Three Kings Of Orient Are. Dick Reynolds did the musical arrangement but, Brian did the vocal arrangement. Personally, I cried when I first heard it

I don't mean all this *literally*, but it sounds like Brian wasn't just a genius, but like he had such a special sensitivity, an openness of spirit that he could act as a conduit between some heavenly realm and the earth. It doesnt sound like he invented the music with his own cleverness, but like the music existed and he was the only one who could hear it, and passed it along to everyone else. Hearing those harmonies and the phrasing and dynamics, that's all I can think of. It creates a magic that's greater than the sum of its parts. It comes from some other place and breathes life into the harmonies. It sounds like love and feels like clouds parting and golden beams breaking through and shimmering on the water. Pure. I think it takes more than just human voices to create that.

I believe they had only eight tracks on the tape to work with. Plus I believe Brian mixed everything down into mono during that period...so stuff got lost in the mix. Listen to "Wouldn't It Be Nice" vocals only...you can NOT hear all that vocal material in the final mix.

"Breakaway" is a song written by Brian and his father Murry. Murry was credited as the lyricist with the pseudonym 'Reggie Dunbar'.
@thefries9 жыл бұрын
+Gary Knight According to Brian Wilson, his father Murry came up with the idea of this song from watching The Joey Bishop Show on television while it proclaimed, "We're gonna break for a minute and we'll be right back!". Brian, at his piano, then composed the song with Murry as they "plunked and plunked and plunked" and "finally got a song going." When asked why Murry used a pseudonym, Brian responded: "I don't know. He was nutty. He was crazy, that was his fictitious name." At another time, Brian has said that The Monkees inspired him to write this song.[citation needed]

Outstanding vocals, some of the best Brian every arranged and the Boys ever recorded. I'm curious about the "dry" quality of the vocals...no reverb or brightness...I doubt this was an accident, Brian would never be so careless!
@jeff-6943 Жыл бұрын
It might be so dry because of the amount of overlay in the vocals, if all the vocals were drenched in reverb it would create a lot of dynamic dysfunctions in the mix.

at times it sounds like it's Carl and Brian double tracked and trying to sound as close to each other as possible. The "I can break away" section is Al Jardin. Something about Brian's vocal arrangements from this period is so bright, expansive. He was always changing, there isn't just one style of Beach Boys harmony

It's Carl singing lead from 0:18 to 0:45, then it's Brian until the chorus, which is Al. Second verse is all Carl. Tricky, hey! (On the alternate Hawthorne version, it's all Brian on the first verse.)
