And really playing all of their instruments and singing, not just lip-syncing to the studio recording. Miming to a recording was extremely common on TV back then and probably still is today (but I don't watch TV anymore, so I can't say for sure). Kudos to Andy Williams for authenticity.

@vulpo2 ай бұрын
@@johnlloyd1388 After viewing this again, I think you are right. I think maybe I had been confusing shadow of the microphone cords with guitar-amp cords. The backing track was probably the work of the Wrecking Crew who performed most of the instrumentation on their recordings. That,'s so sad. Their vocals are still great though. Showbiz is mostly fakery of one kind or another. What excites people is usually just not reliably available. especially for a low budget live-TV performance, so backing tracks, if not the actual studio recording of the hit record is a cheap way to give people the fantasy they crave. Most people don't seem to notice or don't seem to care. I don't know why I am so obsessed with authenticity.

Mike really had a very important part singing those very low parts which he does in all the harmonies when he is singing harmony. He nailed every one of those and they were hard
@JDubs1146 ай бұрын
They really aren’t hard at all. Singing the harmonies like Brian and Carl are doing is much harder.
@basketcase69993 ай бұрын
@@JDubs114It depends on your natural vocal range as well as vocal strength. Mike was a baritone, the others (except maybe Dennis? Hard to say with how much his voice changed) were tenors. Singing as deep as Mike did wouldn’t come as naturally as it would to the average male (who is a baritone), especially at an acceptable volume with an acceptable power and quality. And that’s important because you can hide weak singing in a harmony stack as long as you’re hitting the notes. But if you’re singing effectively solo, like Mike, then every little imperfection is highly audible. You really have to deliver the goods in his place, and Mike definitely did.

Al didn’t play on the first four albums (Surfin’ Safari-Little Deuce Coupe). He did play on their first single, “Surfin’”. He was in the original 1961 lineup, but he left for dental school at the end of the year. That’s when, right before they were signed to Capitol, they replaced him with Carl’s friend from across the street. Marks played the first four albums (Surfin’ Safari, Surfin’ USA, Surfer Girl, and Little Deuce Coupe). Marks appears in the most famous photos of the band. Marks got into a fight with Murray at the end of ‘63, they got Jardine back, and the rest is history.
