Great era for the BBs. Really came into their own for an brief period during the Carl and the Passions tour era and kinda was able to shed the skin of their clean 60s image and sound.

Considering how much the crowd is clapping along, I'm surprised this song wasn't a bigger hit of theirs. The Post-Pet Sounds era of the Beach Boys is vastly underrated.

It should have been. They had many great songs between Smiley Smile and Holland that should have been top 10 hits. Not to mention they left several very good songs in the vault as well. Soulful Old Man Sunshine would have fit right on home on the radio in 1969-1970.

Same for me! I love the early stuff from the sixties because it's just so much fun to hear and sing along to and you can't beat the harmonies, but the early 70s were the best! I just can't understand why they didn't have a run of #1 hits in that time period. The music was outstanding, especially with the influence of Carl and Dennis. I was only 10 years old when this video was made, so I was probably listening to The Jackson 5 and The Osmonds at that time (LOL), and when I started going to Beach Boys concerts in the mid 70s, they had pretty much gone back to their oldies, so I wasn't really exposed to this on the radio and had to find it myself. The only thing I can guess is that the music just wasn't promoted like it should have been, which I guess would be the decision of the recording company at the time and maybe the decisions of one or two band members. I just don't get it! It just doesn't get any better than this!

Radio refused to play them, even when they liked the records. There's a great story about a Reprise promo man going to WFIL in Philly with "Add Some Music To Your Day" and being told by the program director that he loved the record, but he wouldn't go near it because it was the Beach Boys. They were considered that "out" at the time. But shows like this turned it around by 1973-74.

Technically 24 and 26, since D & C were both December babies. Sadly, the BBs couldn't buy a hit in 1970-71 despite a profusion of great music, released and unreleased. Was lucky enough to see a near-duplicate of this performance a few months later--the band was just *sensational* in that time frame. Such sweet memories--thanks to @upfront27 for posting...

After making several great albums, such as "Sunflower", "Surf's Up", "Carl and the Passions - So Tough", and "Holland", Capitol Records released "Endless Summer", a compilation of their best '60's singles and album cuts. It was a double album, and it went double-platinum. The Beach Boys got the message. The U.S. was in the middle of a nostalgia craze, launched by the success of the movie "American Graffiti". It was a great movie. Music from the '50's, considered somewhat obsolete, became suddenly cool. Long explanation, I'll agree. The Beach Boys were now playing stadiums, and they knew their fans wanted to hear the oldies, not the more recent creative and experimental work. Which is why, after giving us a brilliant album, such as 1973's "Holland", they handed us a piece of dreck such as 1976's album "15 Big Ones."

The following is from a Hawthorne High P.E. coach where the Wilson's and Al Jardine went to school; I remember this conversation I had with Carl Wilson like it was yesterday. Carl was a sophomore in my P.E. class, and in those days it was a mortal sin not to dress for P.E. (a non strip). I could never get Carl to dress for my P. E. class. When, on those rare occasions, he did dress for class he would come out wearing his cowboy boots and carrying his guitar. During class he would sit on the bench play his guitar, never taking part in any class activity. One day I decided to have a man to man talk with Carl, so I sat down beside Carl and told him he was probably going to fail P.E. Carl says to me" coach thats ok, I really don't like P.E." So I ask Carl what he wanted to do with his life. Carls' response was, "coach all I want to do is learn how to play this guitar and join a band". My great bit of advice to him was, "Carl you are never going to make a living playing that g-----d guitar. You would be smart to put that guitar in a closet some place, and go find a real job. Ten years from now I will probably see you up on Hawthorne blvd. selling pencils or something". Boy, some advice. By the way, I did give him an "F" in P.E. Coach Bunyard

I love this story! I love it because it sounds just like how I was at that age. Carl was a bit of a rebel but it's because he could see what was real and followed his own dream. I was once told I would be flunking PE if I didn't participate more and I told the teacher I didn't see much of a future in spending time in PE when I could be in Jazz band and choir doing what I was born to do. Yes, I got an "F" but it didn't alter my future any. I just love Carl's way!

I saw them live during this period. It was after they had just released "Sunflower." Saw them promoting the album at the Whiskey in West Hollywood. It was a great experience. "Sunflower" didn't score big (a shame). But the album they did after that, "Surf's Up", really did. And they were off and running in their creative, early '70's run. Along with the the aforementioned two albums, they also gave us "Carl and the Passions - So Tough", and "Holland". Four brilliant, very creative albums in a row. Their new direction. The crowd they were performing for here really appreciated their new musical direction. That creative run ended in 1974, when Capitol released "Endless Summer", trading on the nostalgia craze begun by the movie "Anerican Graffiti." A double album which featured their great '60's hits and singles. It went double-platinum. Great marketing and timeing on Capitol's part. But it also spelled the end of the Beach Boys' early '70's creative period. Their new stadium fans wanted to hear their oldies hits, not "It's About Time" and "Feel Flows." So the Boys went from giving us a great album such as "Holland" in 1973, to "15 Big Ones" in 1976...

After that Sunflower is OK, Surf's Up has a couple of good songs, Carl and the Passions is pretty crappy, Holland has like 2 or 3 good songs and 15 Big Ones is fun if really rough. I like Love You as a weirdo album and MIU has some laughably bad stuff. I think their best stuff was 1964. All Summer Long album and the "When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)" single. Imagine it is 1974.5/75 and instead of shelving the new project the Boys vote to release the double album despite the new RIAA compensation rules. My thought would be: Side 1: 1) We Got Love (Studio), 2) Out in the Country ( Don lead), 3) Hard Times, 4) Looking At Now, 5) Wonderful/Don’t Worry Bill, 6) Where is She?, 7) My Love Lives On, 8) My Friend (studio finished) Side 2: 1) Sweet Mountain ( Beach Boys take), 2) Good Timin (1974), 3) River Song (Beach Boys Take), 4) Fallin in Love, 5) Wouldn’t It Be Nice to Live Again? 6) Wild Honey (with Blondie), 7) Forever Side 3: 1) Rolling Up To Heaven, 2) Rock N Roll Woman, 3) Too Cruel, 4) Michael Row Your Boat Ashore, 5) On Broadway, 6) Sail On Sailor ( Caribou style), 7) Aren’t You Glad (Live 1970) Side 4: 1) It’s A New Day, 2)I Write the Songs (Bruce Johnston), 3) 4th of July, 4) Oakie From Muskogee, 5) Back Home (mix of old 1963 with 1970 verses and newer B Section- no voice crack), 6) Goin to the Beach, 7) Good Vibrations (live)
