Adult/Child is one of my favorite albums ever. It’s a true look into Brian’s life at that time. The Dick Reynolds arrangements are fantastic and the other songs are great as well. Usually I drop HELP, Games, and On Broadway in favor of My Diane, Marilyn Rovell, and Sherry She Needs Me. I also like to throw in stuff like Our Team and New England Waltz. There’s a great collection of material from that time

It's Trying To Say is such a quintessential Love You-era Brian song. The whole first verse sounds so earnest and thoughtful--"there's a song inside of you," and "it's trying to say to you, everything will be alright." Then the band picks up, the backing vocals kick in, and the next verse confidently sings out... "*Oh, the baseball season's on,*" and suddenly it's a baseball song. And yet, just like Johnny Carson, it totally works. Adult/Child feels like the kind of album where, if you were just hanging out with Brian and a piano one afternoon, you'd want him to play this.

I absolutely LOVE Adult/Child!! The perfect brother of Love You!! I only can imagine how it would have been with a complete mixing/production etc...with the add of My Diane in the tracklist and songs like Life is for the living, Still I dream of it and It's Over now...what a (imaginary unfortunately) record man!!!

There is a bootleg of Adult Child to hear on YT and i have to say i am really impressed and the entire griop are in fine vocal style. Some of the songs a pretty quirky, but since when was Brian conventional ? and you are right Giggens, he sounds on fire here and to my mind, rather than become an " oldies " band, i think had they had continued down this line this woud have made them more acceptable to newer fans as looking back is all nery fine but moving forward is much more rewarding. I am not saying that Adult Child would have been a huge hit, but when you consider that Pet Sounds wasnt, you can see where i am going with this. Adult Child i know, is the sort of music Dennis and Carl preferred and Mike and AL both preferred the oldies formuler and i remember Mike pointing this out in one of his many interviews for Capital Radio when he said that " Never have there been five more different guys ", when it comes to music and i think poor old Brian was stuck in the middle, but i love adult child for what it is and its different. and a grower.

Hi Giggens another great summing up! Yeah, Adult Child would definitely only interest us hard core Beach Boy / Brian fans! 😂 It would be great though to have all the original tracks remastered, or at least cleaned up. Sill I dream of it and It’s over now are simply stunning songs and as you stated should be on any list of best Brian tracks. 👍🏻😁 The Adult Child original version of Hey little Tomboy is err interesting .... 👊🏻

It's still available only as a bootleg, though many tracks have been released on compilations such as Good Vibrations: 30 years of the Beach Boys and the Made in California: Box Set . As an unfinished album there is still a mini smile bootleg thing going on of guessing what the final track listing would be but here is a version - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXbccndorKhqq8U

Bootleg copies of Adult/Child are extremely hard to find, but you can easily hear the album online. I've only seen a copy of Adult/Child once in a record store for $50 and I bought it. That's definitely the rarest and most valuable record I've ever been lucky enough to acquire.

Whilst I understand the record company not wanting to release Adult/Child at the time (much as I like it), I can't understand how the Beach Boys themselves have included only a few of these and the other tracks they recorded at the time on their box sets or as bonus tracks. Also, with all that material floating around why on earth were they then reduced to re-writing most of a proposed Christmas album to make the MIU album? "Hey, just the average day in the life of the Beach Boys" I guess When you mentioned about how the album has virtually been ignored by the record company, and it may be different abroad (UK), but whereas 15 Big Ones and the MIU album have had re-releases on vinyl, I can't recall ever seeing a Love You vinyl re- release. Lucky I kept my original copy!

@Giggens so yesterday I was lucky enough to walk into a thrift store and find a bunch of Beach Boys vinyl in great condition e.g. Spirit of America, The Brother Years, MIU, LA Light, Carl and the Passions, all the twofer vinyl like Friends/Pet sounds, Brian Wilson 1st solo, Beach boys self titled, Love You, etc. One thing that I was pretty excited about was a record called Brian Wilson Rarities. I never knew it existed.. which leads me to my question. Are you going to review that? I assume you have it on vinyl. Tnx

I honestly did not like Adult/Child primarily because of how "Life is for the Living" reminded me of a lot of those bland big band songs that ruled music up until the 1950s. However, after giving it a few more tries and moving past that song, I've come to appreciate the stand-out tracks and am anticipating another listen. Loving this Love You month Giggens!

Interesting about the Adult Child track listing, except for the older songs, no Mike Love lead vocal. Mike allegedly said to Brian, upon hearing the AC tracks, "what the f--k are you doing?" (Peter Ames Carlin book IIRC). Also, God knows I shouldn't, but I love Lazy Lizzie.

I love the BB version of Mony Mony with the Billy Hinche vocal, I wonder if they ever had a take with one of the original BB's on it? BTW have you heard this cover of Mike Come Back from LA quichenight.bandcamp.com/track/mike-come-back-to-l-a ? I think it's a pretty good take on it, I would love to hear how the original sounded at the desk (I suspect we've only heard the TV camera version so far from the doco My Team). I know it eventually became Some of Your Love which I do not find as satisfying. The Beach Boys seemed to have a habit of turning promising demos into average songs at this time , Almost Summer (I know it's celebration rather than BB) is another example, Brian's demo sounds good but the end result is let's say duller and less dynamic....

I'm no doubt in the minority here, but I'm not crazy about Brian's songs from this era. A lot of them have some clumsy musical moments, and lyrically they can be pretty weird. Melodically, they're in a different style--often a more simplistic one--and certainly in terms of arrangement. Yes, I am a HUGE BW/BB's fan, and while many people gush about LOVE YOU and the other songs from this era, I think that while there are some excellent ones, the vast majority sound unfinished to me. Maybe Brian needed to crank them out at the time, but I don't think his "genius" was working as well as it had in the past. He might have needed some rewrites. A lot of the songs are quirky, and while that's part of Brian's charm, as you stated, that isn't going to sell records to anyone but the already converted. Although it predates this era, I love what he did with "Back Home" on 15 BIG ONES. The "Back Home" part was the memorable hook the song needed. While the previous versions were enjoyable, they needed more work. I feel a lot of Brian's songs from 1978 needed more "work" to take them to that next level. Maybe he couldn't or wouldn't push himself in that way at that particular time? Perhaps this style of "Sinatra songs" just doesn't appeal to me, and I say this as a fan of Sinatra who has every last song ever recorded by "The Voice." I don't think Brian's Muse should have taken him in that direction.

Have a bootleg CD of Adult Child paired with Landlocked. Agree with you that some of the songs are decent, while others are WTF? Think the best thing on it, for me, is the cover of On Broadway, with Al singing lead. Disagree with you about We Gotta Groove, which you think is a decent BBs jam. I think it's a good candidate for the worst song they ever recorded. To me, it sounds like a group of 12 or 13 year old kids just learning to play their instruments (the organ part sounds off-key), thinking they are so cool, that they occasionally chant " We! We! We Gotta Groove! " Yea, right!
