The Beach Boys: Pet Sounds - Album Review

I think you showed a lot of understanding and respect for one of the most influential pop/rock records ever released. There is so much music and production of music that probably traces something back to Pet Sounds and that is why it is highly regarded by so many in the music industry. It really feels like Brian was letting the listener into his deepest thoughts and emotions at the time he was working on the record in 66. It was also the album that led Brian into recording Good Vibrations which is just as groundbreaking as Pet Sounds in its own special way. I agree that the early 70's Beach Boys albums were also something special, showing how talented the whole group was. Holland is a particular favourite of mine.

thats a brave review of such an iconic album, you are damned if you do and damned if you dont, i think you were pretty much spot on for me, i love the two instros they just change the tempo of the album perfectly, all the songs are awesome like you its not my favourite album that has to go to to surfs up or holland, 60s wild honey, but should be in all top 5 album reviews its that good and game changing in production, cheers well done

Thanks! Sometimes I feel I like Today more than Pet Sounds. But mostly I prefer Holland, Sunflower or even Surf's Up or Love You.

Great review! I first heard Pet Sounds in 1966 at school when our music teacher allowed us to play it in a music lesson - I live in Liverpool and remain a big Brian Wilson fan! I agree that the Beach Boys made some great albums before and post Pet Sounds

I actually only a month ago or so bought my second copy. It's relatively hard to find, here at least, at record stores.

Good album, yes. Great album, no. The Beach Boys, in their totality, projected themselves as an upbeat band, however Brian is/was morose. Mike Love has been interviewed several times about this. Brian, in my opinion, might've found what he was searching for in himself as a solo singer accompanying himself on piano, perhaps as a jazz singer/pianist. But, he didn't do this. He made a "Beach Boys" album instead of a solo album and in some sense it is neither one or the other fully.
