makes a lot more sense like this, as a sort of condensed opera (similar to brown shoes dont make it) maybe people were pressuring him to get it all this down in to like a 4 minute song which doesnt really work. he was a masterful composer trapped in a rockin' surf band...

That might be an unpopular opinion, but Heroes and Villains feels to me like Brian's opus magnum - a centerpiece of his most ambitious project (SMiLE album) when he was at peak of his creative abilities. I wish there was an official 7+ minutes version of H&V in BBs catalog, this song deserves it. Also releasing H&V part 1 (the version we know) and part 2 (more wacky) as A-side and B-side respectively would be a great idea for a single in 1967 IMO.

This is great. Thanks. I"m not sure what the "definitive" version of Smile really is, but I love that it's such a modular "lego bricks" type of deal that you can put it together in all sorts of different ways. I've heard multiple versions of this album and yet to fully get my head around it. I used to write the Beach Boys off as "hippy shit" when younger, due to the crap mainstream radio playing a cut down version of good vibrations, badly, over and over. But this album changed me. Brian Wilson, is fucking nuts. What a work of genius.

finding a smile fan-mix on youtube one day sent me down a rabbit hole that i was not ready for. why does the beach boys have lore. and why is it so depressing. i thought they just made silly love songs.

this is the best "symphony-style" rendition i've heard of h&v yet--everything meshes together perfectly & there's no weird jarring stops like in other mixes where the random unrelated pieces begin & end. wonderful work
@bgbstrm23523 ай бұрын
Besides all the beautiful ballads and softer songs, remember Brian was also a "beat guy", as we can hear on many tracks/pieces, like Look and He gives speeches (which unfortunately emerged into She's goin' bald) and H&V had a steady beat (which was enhanced in the live performances throughout the early 70's) and so on. Like the later Male ego.

This is by far the coolest, most interesting mix of "Heroes and Villains" I've heard. It's probably a bit long to be considered a "single," but, it's still amazing. I wonder what Brian Wilson would have thought.

This mix sounds nearly close to what it was intended in 1967. From what I read Heroes and Villains was suppose to have like a "Barnyard Suite" with Barnyard, My Sunshine, & I'm in Great Shape. You really nailed it here if this was gonna be the opener to Smile if released in that year. We'll never know what the 67 version would have really sounded like but we have open interpretations thanks to the Smile Sessions Boxset. This is one of the best mixes I heard. Nice work. :)
@dummyexploits8109Ай бұрын
there was no "Barnyard Suite" in 67, that was a BWPS. unlike so many people think, Brian DID finish Heroes and Villains in 67, you can find it as "Heroes and Villains Part 1" Part 1 is an actual Brian mix, also known as the Cantina version - Brian actually wanted to hand this in to Capitol as the finished single but chickened out last second. It includes Cantina sections, some other vocal excerpts, the Barnyard ending, (which would end up in My Sunshine in BWPS). The tragiclifeform version is basically just playing with the sections.
@dummyexploits8109Ай бұрын
I like tragiclifeform's version because it showcases very well the complexity of it and uses quite a lot of the sections that were discarted for the track.
@dummyexploits8109Ай бұрын
the Barnyard section that was used for YAMS was never intended for it to be in that track it actually fits very well in Barnyard

Must say this makes complete sense for the progression that Brian seemed to be heading towards with the layering and complexities of The Beach Boys harmonies and orchestrated music, like we have seen in the recent box sets, take for example Steamboat off Holland the backing track hundred percentage a steam engine add the vocals, Dennis, Carl, Brian wonderful production or the whole band working as one. This mix over blown prog rock/pop yes but isn't it magnificent. May not be 3 minute gems of the early sixties exploring the Californian life style but was this the type of Smile mix Brian was so masterly trying to deliver to us. So much in so many Beach Boys individual songs to listen to.

One of the greatest, most insane, most incoherent mixes of my favourite song. This perfectly communicates Brian Wilson’s state during ‘66/‘67, and I fucking love it. Great work man!
@Anonymuse_3 жыл бұрын
Wow, you really showed the chaos and complexity of that track and that time. It really draws you in at one point, it reminds me of the pool sequence in the Love And Mercy movie with the SMiLE sessions tracks cobbled together to show the mental crisis Brian was going through. Even though its not entirely cohesive, I must say you made a great mix. I love your work especially what you've done with the Beatles albums, can't wait to hear more in the future.

Awesome mix! This makes it feel less like a song from an album and more like a standalone song/EP release or even like an orchestral piece. The quiet piano before the real intro at 2:20 is so cool, really Rhapsody in Blue-ish. And the scary descending piano blending with Barnyard at 5:00, I could never figure out where to put that weird section, lol. I also like the barely audible banter in the background throughout the song, makes it more surreal and manic. Also removing the harpsichord from Children Were Raised was an interesting touch. 7:13 There is no curse in Elvish, Entish, or the tongues of men for this THIEVERY! Lol fr I think you incorporated this pretty well, most mixes have snippets from others as well so it's all good. Overall, cool stuff, and I'm honored to have 'contributed'!

Has 'tragiclifeform' ever thought about doing an alternate universe for The Beach Boys? Especially from 1967 onward? What if Brian Wilson persevered, and stayed as the band's leader throughout the 60s, 70s, & 80s?

@4dultw1thj0b3 ай бұрын
@@tragiclifeform347 I've been pondering it myself, and even though it's impossible to know I really like imagining what a more confident young Brian might've come up with. I do think he'd still likely take a backseat for a little bit after Smile, just out of fatigue and not wanting to push his bandmates away, probably releasing a more loose relaxed album later in the year that's like a Smiley/Wild Honey mashup. But then after that? One idea I have that I think would be kinda funny is if in this universe he splits from the Beach Boys in 1970 while the Beatles stay together and their cultural legacies end up almost sort of flipped, though I don't think the Beatles would ever go full Kokomo lol. Also I imagine some librettist writing to Brian and Van Dyke about adapting Smile into a stage musical, which of course would start the stress cycle all over again.
