When I was 14 I stayed up late watching this with my Dad and thought one day I'm gonna go there. 9 years later I was 23 and after a break-up I took off to Australia for a month and didn't come back for well over a year! The last four I spent exploring South East Asia including a month in Thailand where one night we had a party on "the beach" with this music playing! That was 11yrs ago and yet whenever I hear this music, the nostalgia feeling comes flooding back. You have but one life so make sure you live it!!

2 weeks ago I went to visit Phi Phi Island and Maya Bay.I am 39 years old and my biggest wish came true with this trip.I come from a poor family and when I was young it seemed to be an impossible aim in my life to visit this place one day. This reminds me of a 4 month backpacking trip before this movie was made, around 1997-1998. Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, China, Laos, and Burma/Myanmar. Best vacation ever!

Spent 7 weeks backpacking Thailand in the summer of 2000, wedged between the second and third year of Uni. I have vivid memories of taking the night train reading the Beach from Bangkok to Surat Thani. This track reminded me of drinking Sangsom with my legs still dangling from the back of the train (which was still possible back then), Much of my expat life is shaped by that first adventure, Those six weeks have stories to fill a book, let alone the years that have followed, sometimes I feel I should write it, even for my own prosperity and the cathartic nature that comes with spilling your own secrets.

I was in thailand that summer as well. Pattaya, bangkok, Nakhon si thammarat all the way down to phuket and back. No gps, no cell phones, no money and no sense. Lost a tooth, rode an elephant, caught the clap, best time of my life!

I watched it alone in a movie theater after a bad exam in college , and i was dazzled by the movie , the movie and the song was a dream that makes your jaw drop and you live within fiercely and you wish that you will never wake up from it , that was 1999 exactly midterm maybe February or January i`m not sure , the places changed and the years ran by and i`m still alone , but at least thanks for the gift of a family that i`m more bond with now .

This film sorta epitomized the feeling/mood of an entire generation really. If you graduated in the late 90s or 2000ish, this film highlighted and marked the beginning of the sort of adventures you only yet dreamed of. We had Brooke Burke Wild On E! traveling the globe on late night TV, that we watched in bed with our then high school girlfriends we were soon to break up with, only to hope we’d find a Brooke Burke or a, french girl abroad, like Francois, soon enough, on some backpacking trip on a shoestring budget, to somewhere tropical with no rules. And for many of us, I suspect that this movie did play a role in shaping many of our adventures. I know that at that time, and for many years, that’s how I wanted to live my entire life, and in a way I sorta have! Not sure that was smart or the right path, as the movie itself shows us that paradise always loses its luster, eventually. And as much spark as this film ignited within me watching clips, like Richard in that cafe, I know there’s no going back.
