Started shaping my boards about a year ago and I never thought fins actually mattered until I started trying different fins on my own shapes. Since then I've been using ride number (and shred show) to understand how and why find are constructed different way for different conditions, which has vastly improved my understanding of hydro dynamics and affected how I shape my boards!

The futures ride number definitely helped me pick my first set of futures fins for my Lost Sub Scorcher 2. After going through the ride numbers, I ended up going with the Futures WCT. So far I love them, even though I am a beginner I may not be able to tell a difference. A new set of quad futures would be amazing to test out on my new mini driver! Thanks shred show for doing these reviews, absolutely love them.

It's so funny you mention Futures' new ride number feature - I have been checking their website and waiting for it to get out of the "beta" phase (for what feels like forever) and now that it has, I have been using it to help me try and select some quad rears to add to my John John and WCT thruster fins (I use the word "try" simply because making important decisions can be very tough - and I'll need to explain it my wife). This episode of Shred Show was timely as it touched on some helpful points on this very topic - so thank you as always! Keep up the greatness! Fingers crossed.

My personal favorite for quads right now is the Rasta quad due to it's ability to hold very well while pushing hard through cutbacks and bottom turns while in waves from knee high to about head high. I have also found that I like the Rusty 5 fin set quads for a slight change is waves that are more pockety such as beach breaks with steeper faces.

I use the ride number to help pair my smaller day boards to Speed generating and more releasy kind of fins. Then for the bigger day boards I use fins with a ride number closer to 10 for stiffness and control.

Because I live in Ventura CA I like using fins higher on the scale because the waves here don't usually have enough push and these fins help me generate speed.

Hey shredsmiths, Ive been using the ride numbers for futures. I am borrowing a dumpster diver and since im on the dirty east in NYC I wanted to make sure I grabbed fins that would be super speed generating and loose but still with enough drive for a hard turn. So I took a leap of faith with the ride number as my guide and grabbed all 5 of the new balackstix 3.0 f8's. They are rated a 9.4 ride number. So stoked on the quads that I haven't even tried the thruster config yet. The quads feel like a thruster which I guess is what you'de expect from such a high ride number. Ride number isn't gospel but it sure helps navigate the wide ranging options.

I use Futures and like to experiment with different ride numbers for the type of wave, and also, how I'm feeling that day. If I feel like cruising, I'll go for a low ride number, but if I want to get out the aggression, then I go with a higher ride number.

I wanted more speed and projections out of my bottom turns. I went on futures website and selected the highest ride number in small thruster. Boooom F4 blackstix 3.0 (9.6 ride number) for my firewire Pyzalien. And it totally did what I expected and wanted ! So stocked with futures fins. Good review once again Chris cheers !

another choice show! and that board looks super fun for high tide sessions at the points here in raglan. im a progressing surfer and i chose the futures controller quads to go on my 6'2 spitfire as i wanted predictable feel under foot. but now that im trying to get a bit more loose with my turns im eying up the AM1 honeycombs. thanks again for all the advice and the stoke. chur!

Hi Chris, Great show! I've got a Pyzel Flash and I use 2 set of Futures on it: AM2 TechFlex Thruster set when I go for more hollow waves and go for the barrel and have to go extreme on some bottom turns go to pocket. When I go on my usual beach break, kinda similar to HB, I go on my Jordys that I really cause the drive they can help generate to go fast down the line. Sometimes in the summer, waves are somehow bad, I've got a Mutant and I put the AM2 in quad set and I really like how the board feels with them. Really responsive and helps gain a lot of speed to pass those flatter and crumblier section that summer waves do at my beach break. I think that the AM2 template in TechFlex suprised me a lot on how well it performs in different conditions and different type of boards! Cheers from Portugal!

Another spot on review. I tend to ride a low Ride Number fin when I'm surfing a point break, or a punchy beach break (am1 glass). Since I drive off my rear foot, I tend to stick with a low Ride Number on the majority of waves I ride so I feel that I can commit to my turns on any wave without sliding out. Additionally, I've appreciate stiffer fins since I feel they give more spring in and out of turns.

got the futures 5 fin Roberts set for a 5'11 hybrid shorty/fish with a winged thumb tail, they work great as a quad and thruster but I prefer the thruster! I am in the shaping my first board and its similar to this model in width and overall shape but mines got a diamond tail. I am installing a 5 fin setup on it and think I'm going to give the Controller quads a try after I see how my Roberts set works with it!!! Super Stoked and love the show

I just got a new DHD twin fin and chose to ride the t1 honeycomb futures with a ride number of 5 for a balanced feel as I've never had a twin before. The thing goes sick, so much fun. Next I'll be trying the AMT template with a ride number of 7/10 for more speed and spring through turns. Love riding futures

Just ordered a 5'8 CI #4 groveler dims (great review!) for the rock reefs and beach breaks of northern central CA. Have the rounded squash paired with the 5-fin AM2's. This will be my first set of futures and am stoked! I fall shy of the weight recommendation, but the wide 15" tail should help! Can't wait to get them in the water and dial in my ride number!

Shred Show has been great in helping me put together a quiver of boards and fins to experiment with. I am 6'6" 225lbs and ride the following: JS - Quickshift : 6'6"x19-3/4"x2-3/4" (36.0L) CI - Weirdo Ripper: 6'2"x20-7/8"x2-5/8" (37.5L) Hayden - Hypto Krypto: 6'2”x20-3/4”x2-3/4” (38.4L) Firewire - Sweet Potato: 5'10"x22-1/2"x2-7/8" (46.8L) My Future Fins are: Controller Quad/AM2 Techflex 5 Fin/Pancho Sullivan Honey Comb Thruster Set I recently bought the Hypto and was looking at fins and using Futures Ride number is much easier to understand than fin specs such as Area/Foil/Base/Rake/Flex. Checking out my existing fins they all have Ride Numbers in the low or neutral range and are better for predictability and speed control in powerful waves yet most of what I surf is average waves so I should try some fins with a higher Ride Number and maintaining larger dimensions due to my size such as the F8 Blackstix or QD2 4.15 Quads. Will be fun to mix and match as well.

Being a novice when regards to fins, the ride number has been very helpful for choosing fins for my 7'6 Calvani thruster. Went with the AM2s and they have been fantastic for generating speed, which was what I was looking for. I was super stoked for this video because i just had a board shaped for me very similar to the Bean! I was thinking that some controllers would be fantastic for the board because of its inherent planing and squirrely speed. Though some blackstix might give an interesting playfulness to it. Should be interesting in the snappy waters of the Oregon Coast. Might have to brave the mountain passes and 3 hr drive to get some surf!

Started out with AM2 tech flex (on 6'0" hybrid type board), but added QD2 4.15 tech flex. Thought that's a safe bet as intermediate surfer, but after learning more about ride numbers (on futures site but even more from your vids! Thanks!) I found I much better enjoyed the Rasta quads. I also paired Rusty Blackstix with QD2 4.0 Blackstix. I definitely like the higher ride numbers here in South OC.

I like to switch it up between the tech flex and blackstix depending on how big the waves are or what board I'm taking out. I've also been trying to start riding fins with a lower ride number so I can branch away from fin sliding to more powerful turns.

As always, great stuff. I spend a lot of time surfing a fairly mushy, but powerful, beach break in Costa Rica and I love the Blackstix. At 6'1 185, the mediums were a tad out of control but the new F8 Blackstix 3.0 work really well with my swallow tailed CI New flyer, my Firewire Dominator when its small and even the GiRabbit when things get bigger. I find the TechFlex just too stiff and drivey most of the time. Thanks!

I always diregarded the Futures Ride Numbers because I thought it was some nonsense. After watching this video, though, the numbers aren't actually a scam! That scale is pretty cool and as soon as your started talking about it, I already had an idea for what my new set up could be. Need something to balance out the speed and looseness of my shortboard and looks like those techflex rears could do the deed. Thanks shred show! Hahaha

Ride number is great. I've switches from F4's to AM1 black sticks for increased speed when pumping down point breaks on my CI New Flyer and Motorboat. Also using your advice for speed and drive, I've acquired a pair of jordy larges and qd 4.0 with relatively large bases on my Proctor Rascal II. Works great for our right hand point breaks in balmy Nova Scotia (water temp is currently -1.5c, 28-30F).

i go stiff for barreling beach breaks, i use the ride number to increase off of 1 and up into tech flex territory. Just thinking that there may be a little extra control for minor adjustments as compared to pure fiberglass. I go to the blackstix probably more often than i should because they do seem springy and help to generate speed. because speed is so key i defer to those higher ride numbers for most surf sessions. favorite set up right now is a 6'2" Pyzel with the special edition am blackstix they released before this new version of blackstix rolled out.

Aloha Chris! I've just begun learning about fins and futures are my choice for boards. I have a couple boards with fcs as well though, which is cool since I'm a Finatic subscriber and am sampling all the different fins I like. In any case, I like using the futures ride number to help me identify a good starting point according to how I would like my board to respond, and also what's recommended for my size. Am currently riding the Marzo 5-fin sets as quads on my new CI SP12 and loving them so far! Can't wait to try the next set I get! Love your show, bud!

Chris I am super stoked about all this fins talk craic! (That's Irish craic btw). I've bought the AM2 in techflex construction with a ride number 3.0 to control the high speed I get when I use them in my peformance shortboard KITEsurfboard (North WAM 2014 model 5'8"). I've recovered from knee injury and shall hopefully test these in thruster and quad setup tomorrow and may even compare them to KS2.1 in honeycomb for pivot and release in the same sesh! Loving the fin advice keep it coming. I'd love to get the EA in blackstix for huge power hacks while kiting and send some spray to the moon!

Great review! I got a board shaped similar to that with more length for extra glide for waves out here in Bolsa Chica. Definitely fills the gap between waves surfed knee to chest high, and to increase the wave count! Anyway, Got I some Black Stix AM1 fins which I usually pair up with a board if I feel it needs a little more looseness to my wider tailed board.

I love the reviews on Shred Show! I watch them regularly and I find the information really useful. Great personality too! I use the Ride Numbers to decipher what will work best with my size and the board I'm riding. I'm a smaller guy, and I'm learning that I like more stability even on shorter boards, so I like the Seaworthy Quads. I also like the AM1s on a custom mid-length that I have. Shred Show I have a pair of futures twin keels their ride number is pretty low it helps me keep control of my speed when im going down the line but the twin fins turn really quickly when i need them to. they also are great for a bigger guy like myself ,i can really feel the control when i need it and the release when i want it . i want to try a quad set of black sticks ,because here in ventura, Ca the waves can be pretty mushy and blackstics foil help generate speed and lift but i don't have enough cash to buy a set for myself .

I am a bigger guy (6'1" 210) and I am using the Futures Vector 2 Tech Flex quads in my big guy shortboard (Joe Blair 6'10" quad) and love the speed and drive they generate. Cee Gee - Good stuff! I use the ride number system like this: I mainly surf high ride numbers(BlackStix/Hex) in the local stuff (SanDiego) and lower ride numbers(Techflex/Glass) in the tropics (Fiji / Indo). Got a few sets of BlackStix with the V2 foil for my wide tailed boards that I need to generate speed with. The flex in the hex & blackstix is maximium speed with minimal push. The inside concave or "foil" on the blackstix brings those wide tailed boards around quickly and seems to give a little extra lift. i.e.: Solus in V2 Stub and Rusty Hex in my 4F. In Fiji or info where your boards are pulled in and shaped to "govern" speed rather than generate it, the stiffness of the Techflex/Glass is mandatory. Pancho Glass / AM2 tech flex 5 fin / Yu Techflex in my Slayers and my Mini Driver when it gets big. With the higher number the fins seem to "load up" & you get more recoil. The low numbers give you total control going rail to rail you really feel the nuances of the board you are riding. BTW:Got a pig of a board?Toss in a quad set or increase the ride number to give her new life. Love the ride # system!!

Question on the futures quad rears: Howcome the RTM honeycomb rears have the symmetric foil, whereas the tech flex has flat inside foil? Step up types of boards that work well for powerful waves normally have the rear boxes closer together, which works well with symmetric foiled fins, so wouldn't you want those made of the stiffer texhflex materials? For what its worth I ride a 5'9" Roberts Dreamcatcher with WCT fronts and 4.0 honeycomb rears and it works great in hollow surf.

Hey Chris, Your show's the best. Put on a little weight? Looks good on ya! I'm in the market for a Bean Bag Style of board right now.... Good Looking out. Not all my boards use Futures fins, but I have a few that do. Lately I've been on my Channel Islands KS12. I've chosen to use the Roberts Thruster in it. This fin has a value of 7.9. It gives the board just enough looseness to get it turned and generate speed, but its not so close to 10 that the board feels out of control when at top speed. I've tried the Jordy Fin (5.1) and the AM2 (3.0) in this board and I found it difficult to get the board turned with both sets. FYI, I also like the Roberts Thruster in my Fred Rubble. Makes the board feel alive! Take care, can't wait for the next vid! (and the next swell. Its been forever). Adam.

I ride Futures AM2s in chest-high to overhead surf on a 6'4" rounded-pin. They're a dope, overall fin setup. I like how well they hold during a giant carve, yet still allow for quick turns when necessary. I dig em. (I also ride Futures... NOTHINGS. I just got an Alaia.) Any comments on how the bean bag rides vs. the Panda Doinker? They seem pretty similar, but i'm not sure what the differences would be in the water.
@SurfboardShredShow
@SurfboardShredShow 8 жыл бұрын
They're both equally fun, but the Doinker is a bit more rippable, the Bean Bag is a bit more cruisey. I think the Doinker is best at around a litter or two more volume than your shortboard volume and roughly 7 inches shorter than your height. I think the Bean Bag is best at the same length as the Doinker, but around 5 liters more volume than your shortboard. Bean Bag is more speedy and easy to use. Doinker is easier to turn, and pivot vertically, etc.

Is this a good substitute for a fun board? I'm getting back into surfing after a ten year hiatus due to varying injuries and military service. I wasn't anything special to begin with, and I'm definitely a total kook now. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Review 'the little donkey' by Adams surfboard. It's super small, super wide for small surf and I would like to hear your thoughts

Chris, congrats for another great review!! Do you believe that the EZ Up and/or the Strech RV would handle not hollow waves up to 6 ft? Do they have potential to be the ultimate groveler step up? I have a bottom feeder as a groveler and would love if I could surf bigfer waves with the same "feel".
@SurfboardShredShow
@SurfboardShredShow 10 жыл бұрын
Gabriel Abirached Yes, EZ Up. That board could probably even handle some barrels at 6 foot. Especially with low Ride Number fins. I'm excited to surf one with an AM2 Tech Flex quad (R.N. is 3).... I know what you mean about trying to get the same 'feel' in two different boards across different wave types. An EZ Up might come close. Keep in mind the tail is much different so you'll have more of a locked in feel to the wave with less on-top-of-the-water-slide beneath your back foot, but the paddling experience will be similar to your Bottom Feeder and so will getting into waves, because the EZ Up puts a bunch of foam up front, with all business in the back.

Shred Show A board that wide can handle barrels? That I wasn't expecting!! Yes, I would probably have some fiberglass or techflex fins when surf gets bigger than 4 ft. Probably the EZ Up will be the closer I'll get from that "surf just for fun" feeling of grovelers, adapted to more serious waves. Last question, the volume of an EZ Up should be close to the volume of my everyday shortboard, and not from my groveler, right? Thank you!

Gabriel Abirached Yes on volume. Now regarding barrels - Is it (and that width) perfectly dialed in for six foot drainers? No it's not. But the tail IS drawn in enough to make it hold in the occasional round section for quick cover ups, while the board design as a whole is mostly geared for easy use and flow in powerful-ish 4 - 6 foot waves. So while you likely wouldn't take it to Indo to get kegged, you could get cover ups at home (assuming you don't call Indo home.)

Shred Show Got it. Unfortunately, it's really rare to see barrels where I surf anyway.

hey i use a set of am2 tech flex's in a 5'10 dfr that i usually ride when the waves are really fun and above 4-5 feet and i ride the clay marzo tech flex in my 5'8 weirdo ripper which is really my go to board almost every day. (i surf east coast ny/nj) i actually do use the ride numbers when choosing fins and was just looking at those tech flex quad rears you showed to put on my weirdo ripper to go with either my am2's or the clay marzo's. what do u think of that match for heavier barreling conditions on the east coast? was considering buying those fins. oh and i hope i win haha, keep up the great vids dude!

For a beginner surfer, should i get the panda doinker or the lost bean bag. I live on the east coast. What would you suggest?
@illstabyou
@illstabyou 9 жыл бұрын
Derpsofter15 I'd say go with the Bean Bag. Especially for a beginner looking to go shortboard. The best way to describe it is a mini-longboard. As far as ease of surfing, it's not too far off from one of those oversized foam boards you see the surf schools using. But yeah ... East Cost (New York) surfer here, I added a Bean Bag to my quiver this year and it has become my favorite board after only a few months. For the East Coast summers with the notoriously small surf, this board is perfect. I'm having tons of fun even in knee high surf with it! To be honest, especially on small wave days, it's probably easier to paddle in and pop on the Bean Bag than it is on the run-of-the-mill 7.5' board that most people are surfing. A huge fan of this board!

Bump it up from what you usually ride, anywhere from 1 to 5 liters. Instead of going really really short with this one, I think it's best when its just really short, and hyper volumed. That makes it about as close to a 'longboard replacement' as you can get in a board that's shorter than your height. I was tempted to get a 5'4 with 35 L (about 1 or 2 more liters than usual) and someone at ...Lost convinced me to try it at 5'6 and 39 liters. Very happy I did.

Shred Show Interesting...so as someone who rides a 25.5 litre shortboard (sub buggy), I should go with one around 30-31 litres? Will give that a try!

This is basically a mini Simmons. Really nothing new, if you check the swaylocks forum people shape this type of stuff all the time. I had almost this exact board shaped except in 6'/22"/3", And in single fly for a bit more pivot, plus in single fin. Very fun board.

Big in the front, small and minimal rake in the back. I like Aipa Twin Fin fronts and Controller rears. Both from Futures. FCS makes comprable fins though with similar templates.

Ho Stevie! think the Bean Bag is the new Couch Potato. They look absolutely identical. I had a CP. used it about a dozen times. It is a fun board but found it limiting when you wanted to do more than just cruise dow the line. Ended up getting rid of it and grabbing a Bottom Feeder. I'd say it's better to go shorter with the CP then getting one thats too big.

Do you think you can see about doing a lib tech review in the future. I watch your show like all the time and I'm thinking about getting a new board I got like 8 choices from watching your shows. I want all 8 but Sadly, I can only pick one😢😭. But I heard there is some very new technology in the lib techs and I've been curious about them for a while.
