Tom comes face to face with the bear in this clip from The Bear. Grab The Bear 25th Anniversary Collector's Edition on Blu-ray and DVD at www.shoutfactory.com/film/act...
The Bear is a sheer triumph of cinema in the wild! Notable for its stunning cinematography, minimal dialogue, and outstanding animal performances, director Jean-Jacques Annaud's (Quest For Fire, The Name of the Rose) astonishing tale of wilderness survival has thrilled and charmed audiences and critics all over the world.
Set in 19th-century British Columbia, The Bear follows the story of a young cub and an adult grizzly as they join forces to survive the perils inherent in their mountain habitat. With each passing obstacle, the two bears further develop a friendship that can only make them stronger - but will it be enough for them to overcome their most deadly enemy?
An adventure story with heart and humanity, The Bear remains a breathtaking and powerful experience decades after its original release. Presented here in a special 25th Anniversary Collector's Edition from Shout! Factory, The Bear proves itself a film to celebrate again and again.

Fun Fact: This happened in real-life to the original novel's author, James Curwood. "Curwood was an adamant bear hunter but one day lost his rifle on a hunt and got confronted by a bear. But for reasons he never understood, the bear let him live. This event affected him so much that he quit being a bear hunter and became a wildlife conservationist instead."

@@stalemurfies2031 Yeah, they might not have had all this knowledge about bears at that time, and/or the bear in question acted as aggressive as the bear in this film does but still backed away. For Curwood who had apparently killed so many bears, he couldn't believe that a bear would spare him in return, which is likely what affected him so much: The bear would have every good reason to kill him, but it didn't. Perhaps Curwood thought he couldn't possibly repay that unwarranted mercy by continuing to hunt bears.

For those who didn't know, Bart - or any movie bear - never actually roared on camera. A bear will only roar during a kill or a fight, so if it roars, that means it's genuinely angry. But these trained bears learn how to mime roaring, and the sound is added in post.

@afriendofbean
@afriendofbean Жыл бұрын
@Servant of The One I agree, that was funny especially one person thought that swipe the bear did was saying to the hunter "eh, heck with your pal" and then walked away. However, I think what the bear was trying to tell the hunter the whole time was saying something like "release my friend right now and we go near or bother you or your partner" since both hunters captured the baby bear together which is this adult grizzly bears friend. Especially the bears look, looks like he's smiling from 1:21-1:26 like he was thinking "I think he understands what I mean" and then his swipe towards the hunter was probably like he was saying "just think about it and do it soon" and/or "sorry if you didn't understand me and sorry I scared you." Plus, maybe the hunter understood that, that's what the bear was saying because the moment both hunters returned to their campsite, the hunter here released the baby bear and told him that he's free to go and wished him Good Luck.

@@pitbulljasper22 That could be true where perhaps the adult grizzly didn't come up to the hunter to attack but try to tell him to get his cub friend back and even when the bear roared at him was like he was saying "you had no business to capture him in the first place" and the swipe was to say "just think about what I said and release my friend soon" since if he was going to attack the hunter, he would have done it right away since bears mostly would stay away from humans.

I did some research to see how they did this shot. Couldn't find anything. Obviously, it's a real bear with real people in one shot. I think they probably switched out Karyo with a stunt man depending on how aggressive the bear was supposed to be acting. I'm not 100% sure if its Karyo through the whole thing. Either way, whoever is in that scene at any particular point with Bart had to low-key be shitting a brick. I did find out that the only recorded injury on the movie was when the film's director was doing some promo photos with Bart and the bear injured him. The director got some nasty scratches on his back which required draining with shunts over the next couple of months. Damn.

Don't know if anybody here has mentioned or noticed this, but the Hunter had the option to just throw himself off the cliff, and he immediately realised he was afraid to do it. He could have done it to avoid the pain of being torn apart and just die on impact, but he couldn't do it. Somehow he was more accepting of the bear killing him and sort of sacrificing himself to it than his other option. I don't know how to interpret it, but it stood out immediately to me when I first saw this scene many years ago.

punkiller666 I interpret it to mean the hunter was to afraid to surely die and thought asking for mercy was a much safer bet, even though he figured it would not work. At least it was a chance he'd take to keep alive. He never figured the bear would spare him. That is exactly why he immediately grabbed his rifle to shoot, but reflected on what had happened to him and he finally realized the bear really did sense his fear and let him live.

Damn good, underrated movie. And I avoided it for years because I just don't like to see animals in what would be bad circumstances. And despite learning later that the adult grizzly would just as well eat that cub as the mountain lion. Well done.

This is actually fairly realistic. Bears will very rarely attack humans with the intent of eating them. It's usually because the human either startles them or because the bear just wants to put them in their place. And the way he makes himself look as non-threatening and submissive as possible, as far as I know that's the right thing to do in this circumstance.

With a mountain lion it would be the opposite. You would have to act bigger and more dominant to scare it away

Yeah, bears usually don't wanna fight, they just want to make sure you are not a threat, if they are not hungry, they won't kill you, the only exception is a mother bear and a bear cub, then a mother will do everything it can to eliminate any potential thread....

If a black bear attacks you, you have to fight as hard as you can and with everything you have, if a grizzly comes (or any brown bear i guess) , you have to play dead, if it is a polar bear, you are fucked 😂

@@nunka34ify same with any type of big cat. At least any that you do actually have a hope in hell of scaring off. Get attacked by a lion or tiger intent on eating you, and you’re frakked no matter what you do. lol.

A lot of people don't know about this movie I seen it in 1990 and I've watched it 6 times it's one of the best movies out, fuk all talking but who needs that when your watching a little baby bear tripping off his head on mushrooms😂😂 he's a cute little fiery bugger and when he shakes the bush like the big bear does to the tree it leaves you in stitches, I can't recommend it enough to watch👍👍👍👍

Well interestingly Jim Henson's Creature shop did build animatronic bears for certain shots, but very few of those bears are in the final film because at the time really didn't have experience making realistic looking animals (up to that point the Creature Shop had made creatures for fantasy movies such as The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, and Dreamchild. Another thing was when they finally got the animatronic bears on set they realized that their bears look so different from the real ones (mainly because they made the mistake only using photos as points of reference, and photos are very different than being with and next to the real animal!) So they ended up relaying on the trained bears more and more. For the record I don't know which shots used the animatronic bears-my guess is any shot where the bears get hurt or injured are the animatronic bears because they don't want the real bears getting hurt-but don't quote me on that!
