We see all these amazing chefs who nurtured & encouraged Carmy, but the one he ends up emulating most is the one who traumatized & humiliated him. That’s heartbreaking.
@wantacchiii4 ай бұрын
When you think abt it, it makes all the sense in the world since we don't know a whole lot about Carmy's dad, but his mom was certainly that kind of figure to him: traumatizing and humiliating, showing him love and care only in the middle of psychological violence and denigration. David sticks to Carmy the most because that's the way he learned how to learn. Sad.
@dtgstl31485 ай бұрын
The chef at the very beginning of the episode is Thomas Keller, the owner and executive chef of The French Laundry. He's widely considered one of the best chefs in the world, and he's the only American chef in the world to own and operate two Michelin three star restaurants simultaneously - The French Laundry in Napa, California, and Per Se in New York City. There are only 13 Michelin three star restaurants in the entire U.S., and he owns two of them. Also, all of the people at the table in the dinner scene except Carm, Syd, and Luca are real well-known chefs or people associated with the culinary world.
@dee5tank4 ай бұрын
Keller and his restaurants are a reoccurring motif this season, IMO. At the very least, there's so many tips of the hat to TK and his restaurant. So much that the joke about Orwellian butter in ep. 3 "Doors" is a about an actual farm called Animal Farm in Orwell, VT. That farm provides/provided cultured butter to Keller's restaurants.
@lordhoot14 ай бұрын
I thought they filmed it very cleverly, with the real chefs on one side of the table and the actors on the other. So the camera can focus on one group or the other, and splice Syd & Luca's lines/interjections in with the more freeflowing unscripted conversation of the non-actors.

My dark humor loving ass would’ve had the whole dinner actually be a planned murder of David in the same style as Dexter meets Hannibal and have everyone cut him to pieces, cook them, then feed David his own flesh while David is still alive and conscious. Maybe the same can happen to that same mentor of yours.

It's crazy how some people think/"teach" like that. The ends don't justify the means. It's like Whiplash in that "push to greatness" nonsense that just seems outright abusive.
@sundropcenter67584 ай бұрын
Arguably, Ice Chips and Forever sort of juxtapose each other Both episodes showed Nat and Carmy confronting their abusers and explaining how they’ve been hurt by them, yet while Donna gave a sincere apology to Nat and is starting to mend their relationship, David just shrugs off the pain he inflicted onto Carmy. If anything, he’s satisfied with what he did to him, which is pretty twisted. This is some very clever storytelling from the writers 🤌🏼

I had the same exact thoughts as Eric. Chef David reminded me so much of JK Simmons in Whiplash

I knew that out of all the reactors out there, you guys would get it. the season has a lack of progression on purpose because we are meant to feel what the characters are feeling: stuck. life isn't monochrome, it's a kaleidoscope. it's a roller coaster, and in that respect, the three seasons of this show feel so real, it's scary. as someone who is in a stuck period of her life right now, this season hit home so much. I'm looking forward to season 4 where we hopefully get some closure and progression for these characters whom I adore. I also agree with you that Ice Chips was probably the best episode of the season, very closely followed by Napkins. thanks for the reaction, fellas! 😃

I've read a book which was the same : I was torn because it made me feel frustrated but at the same time I was impressed by the boldness the author took because yeah it was the point : the characters were stuck and although you wanted them to progress it made sense for them to first backslide before they could actually go forward.
@Cotsos884 ай бұрын
I loved this season too, but the problem for most people was that we skipped their journey. As viewers we went from the triumph of our heroes in Season 2 finale to them feeling stuck in this season after pressing fast forward on the opening episode. It was too fast for us. Sydney was so proud in the Season 2 finale, and in just 4 episodes she's thinking of leaving? We needed more episodes in between, maybe a whole season of the restaurant working.
@SissouLoveVideo4 ай бұрын
@@Cotsos88 Yes I see your point : I think it makes 100% sense for Carmy but not for Sydney. Maybe we're meant to assume she's just sucked into Carmy's decline but even then it doesn't all add up. Like one think that upset me was how they completly abandoned the "I'm sorry" sign and dynamic they built in s2 :(
@the_crypter4 ай бұрын
Again I keep seeing people say this but just because the writers intended something doesn't make them immune from criticism for their intentions. You don't have to have a season where it feels nothing happened to juxtapose with the narrative flow of characters feeling like they are stuck. It's a silly and outright laughable premise lol It's more likely that the season feels incomplete is because it is as they only wanted to have 3 seasons but had to do 4 as Ebon said.
@the_nikster14 ай бұрын
@@the_crypter who said they’re immune from criticism? Lol feel free to criticize constructively. I’ve seen lots of dogpiling on this season that isn’t very constructive because it seems that people don't understand what the writers were trying to do. I do understand that the writers needed to change things due to them being forced to go an extra season, however I still enjoyed the season and while it’s not my favorite season, I understood what they were trying to do with what they were given. Nobody has to agree with my take or the intentions of the writers. I was simply pointing out that I’ve seen other people not understand the writer’s intentions and I was applauding Blindwave for understanding them.

The show literally focuses on Richie's wedding-ring-less hand when he's on the phone to her after the announcement of Ever's closure. And IIRC, that was the episode after his daughter drops the "Mum said you're alone" bombshell, which gets brought up the last episode, before he's back interacting with Jess here. Sydney's growth in the 3 seasons is tremendous. She was shy and unsure in the first season. Second season, she spent all her free time learning how to be a leader. Third season, she's running the entire kitchen. The Berzattos recognize her importance and development, and that's why they're asking her to join in the partnership.

The reviews are all over the place like Carmy, I think. Crazy how Carms trauma made him become so much of what he hates. He took very little from the nurtures but so much from the one person who was negative towards him. He's become a minor mirror image of the successful chef who berated him. Marcus journey is mirroring Carmys' in different ways but how he is building himself is do opposite. Look how he was training Tina. I said it before and I think Carmy will have to loose it all to wake up. Heal and start fresh. I enjoyed exploring this with you guys. This season (for me) was a refreshing look behind the veil to see how these characters not only got to where they are but evolved and grew. All but Carmy. He has regressed as a person despite culinary success. I do think Sydney will jump ship. You can't help anyone who won't help themselves. It's painful when you can see all they have but they keep getting in their own way. Always a pleasure my guys. Going to hit MR. Robot after this!

My wife and I geeked out hard at all of the (real world) chefs in this episode. Bradley Cooper being there implies that movie is set in this universe somehow, lol, and that his character worked at Ever and he might somehow show up in the next season. Would be wild if that happened. Season 3 just feels disjointed. As others have said, it appears they filmed 18 episodes and then split into two seasons. Whether that 4th season comes quickly or they just hold it in the can until next summer we'll see.

@JeffKelly035 ай бұрын
Yeah. Apparently, Chris Storer wanted to do three seasons and that was it, but FX/Hulu asked him to make a fourth so he stretched the story for season three out across 18 episodes (the final eight have already been shot), which is why the pacing of the actual story feels so slow and dragged out in the third season. (At least, that's what Andy Greenwald and Chris Ryan said on The Watch podcast when they were talking about the show.)

@JeffKelly03 From what Ebon Moss-Bacharach said, they were only planning to make 3 seasons, but they had filmed so much that it pretty much warranted the need for a Season 4. Which makes more sense to me.

Honestly, if I were Sydney, I would quit. It would break my heart just like it looks like it’s breaking hers, but The Bear the way it’s being run by Carmen is a sinking ship and she needs to jump ship before she drowns with them if she ever wants to become a successful chef.
@Shatterer1012 ай бұрын
I don't think that you guys realized what really happened in the first interaction with the chef that you wanted him to emulate. After all that wonderful talk, he took the wishbone out just pulling it, so doing it HIS own way, not learning anything in that talk. Details matter in this show.
@thedarkknight22214 ай бұрын
Chef Andrea Terry completely ruined Carmy by inviting David Fields to the event, or even allowing them to be in the same building together. Either she didn’t know that he’s the one who ruined Carmen‘s life by emotionally and psychologically abusing him, or she did know and just invited him anyway. Either way she just did the equivalent of inviting over your friend’s abusive parent or ex husband to dinner with your friend. I mean that’s a massive oversight by the show runner. My dark humor loving ass would’ve had the whole dinner actually be a planned murder of David in the same style as Dexter meets Hannibal and have everyone cut him to pieces, cook them, then feed David his own flesh while David is still alive and conscious.

I don’t mind the no pay off as I see as thematically consistent, but the stretches padded with Faks and poorly tuned, under accomplished scenes: like maybe the rest of the audience was charmed by Josh Hartnett but the writing and his delivery made just a flat scene; conversely, Jon Cena atom bombs a whole episode with shenanigans

The party sequence was the most wholesome thing ever. It was just so heartwarming I loved it a lot and I just love my dysfunctional family so much they’re everything to me 😭❤️ (I’m such a sucker for the found family trope) I have so much more to say but you guys pretty much said everything on my mind, so I’m just in agreement. Thanks for your great reactions to season 3 of The Bear. They’re the best :) This season was… interesting. Idk how to explain it, but I feel like it was a filler one. It was mainly about being stuck, confronting the past, and getting closure (especially with Carmy and his former boss, Nat with her mother, and Richie with his ex-wife Tiff). It felt very underdeveloped in some places, but I suppose that that’s the point. Here’s hoping season 4 actually goes somewhere because it’s obvious they’re setting up a more climactic season. Not that I disliked this season because it was pretty decent. Definitely the weakest one of the bunch, but it’s so ironic for me to say that because the Tina-centric episode ended up being my favorite of the whole series. And I seriously love how the special guest appearances from the previous season feel more real now because it was such a delight to have back. They feel like genuine characters now, and I hope they fontina’s to make appearances. Especially Will Poulter, because I kinda sensed that he and Sydney had a lot of chemistry during that one scene of theirs. And yesss omg I’m so glad you guys also agree about Richie and Jess!! The potential is just so there between them :) Lastly, it’s quite unfortunate and sad that Carmy doesn’t realize how he’s making history repeat itself with the toxic cycle of abuse he’s projecting on Sydney with the way he’s treating her. It’s unintentional, but it’s obvious how he doesn’t realize he’s making her exude the same symptoms that he felt while working for Chef David. It’s been leading up to this moment for a really long time, and now it’s finally coming out. I hope Sydney actually goes through with the offer she got because it’s a great opportunity, and it makes sense why she’s been so hesitant on signing the partnership agreement from Carmy all season. I wonder what his reaction to this will be, though, because I’m not ready at all. Also, Chef Adam looks like he’s got it all mapped out and he’s not as unstable and unsteady as Carmy, so she needs to look out for herself and go for something that’s going to help her in the long run.

I didn't dislike this season as much as many did. There were brilliant moments that I loved so much. But it felt like the first half of a season, and I'm waiting for season 4 to see how I feel about season 3. The most frustrating part for me was Carmy and Richie being separated all season. It felt like Carmen didn't really make any forward progress for me, like he almost regressed. And we spent almost all season watching Syd contemplate leaving instead of doing anything about it. Then ending it with a TBC frustrated me even more.
@THESERIOUSKNOB4 ай бұрын
I mean for me that was the point. While yes, this season had moments I felt were necessary, I think what WAS was the characters just kind of going around in circles, even regressing. We need these characters to just kind of live. I think it is important for however they chose to end the show. Syd not making a decision and Carey not talking to Claire or Richie felt unbelievably real, which is what this show has always been trying to do. I think this season only works because of the show that preceded it, and I think people will remember it better after the next (which I'm guessing will be the last).
