This is pure madness ! Also I would add an introduction from Philip Sergeant book Morphy's games of chess : " Having by this time finished his match with Löwenthal, Morphy fixed up another short one with the Rev. J. Owen. It seems that he was dissatisfied at having lost an off-hand game (No. CCVIII) to Owen, and told some one at the St. George’s that he could give Owen Pawn and move. This came to the ears of Owen, who, being able to hold his own with Staunton at the odds, declared that he was sure Morphy could not, and that, if it was not for his cloth, he would willingly play the match for £1000. Alas for his confidence ! "

Giving away the fpawn is invitation to lynching and then a move advantage that is overkill.owen was very good but didn't want to sac his knight bcoz he was afraid of being piece down. But this was a terrific game by Morphy. like a cat among the pigeons he waited and waited (i thought he went to sleep) and then pounced on his opportunity and then it was over in just three moves.

It's the thought process that is so astonishing. And we're seeing a lot of these games where Morphy seems forced to withstand some pretty fierce attackers who actually gain an upper hand only to fail at closing the deal. In the American Chess Congress tournament, Morphy blithely steamrolls the opposition. In Europe, he is finding the level of mastery is well-ahead of them. Bh3 is so sublime. It's almost otherworldly.
@giriiyer39684 жыл бұрын
Well against Boden too he did nothing defended doggedly fended off a furious attack and didn't give a single check and yet won bcoz Boden resigned.there are quite a few games where Morphy plays like this.

The more I watch morphy's games, the more I am convinced that morphy was excellent, but his opponents actually did not play the best moves Morphy might be brilliant but, to quote Akiba Rubinstein, "a brilliancy can be achieved only if your opponent makes an error in calculation". Morphy's games are brilliant partly due to the fact that most of his opponents played much worse, not because Morphy was an extremely good positional or attacking player (like fischer, tal, karpov, kasparov, nezhmedtinov etc...)

@@CloudVirtualizationEnthusiast I partly agree with this... indeed, chess is probably an equal game and so winning chances are only created when the opponent plays inaccurately, but I would disagree that Morphy's contemporaries were unworthy adversaries. I already mentioned Anderssen, who any modern chess player would recognise as very talented. The same goes for Boden, Harrwitz, and Loewenthal. Morphy's brilliance lies not really in comparison to Fischer or Capablanca, but rather to players like Steinitz and early Lasker who, almost half a century after Morphy took the chess world by storm, were putting together the theory that he intuitively understood. Therefore, I don't think Morphy's brilliance can be entirely discredited by the poor play of his peers, as chess skill can only be measured relative to the player's time period. As for Morphy's quality of play as seen today, his knowledge of position and accuracy in open games is not much less than Fischer or Tal, which is what makes him stand out from the other 19th century masters.

"Mr. Morphy didn't think much of anyone." Bobby Fischer had contempt for those he played (maybe he had some respect for some away from the board, but he still considered other players beneath him). I wonder, if Morphy and Fischer had played, what would they have thought of each other? Fischer obviously held Morphy in the highest esteem, considering he went for rapid development in Morphy's style, but would they both have played as if the other was beneath him? 6:37 when your horse turns into a spider

On 6:10 black rook to g8 would be a forced checkmate for black because after rook g8 white plays Knight to e5, wich is double check from the knight and the queen. Black King has one legal move xd6 and white plays knight to c4 check. Again one legal move for black King to c5 and then white plays b4 check. From there on it is self explainatory i guess ;) even the engine (i Used droidfish) took a while to see it.
