It’s so crazy to me hearing Paul talk about AI. It’s like… The Beatles to me, having loved them my whole life, always sort of represented the soul of the 60s, and really a good lot of the 20th century, and hearing Paul talk candidly about this crazy technology that he likely could never have imagined, this technology that will likely dominate the coming century, it’s just so wild. Like, Paul isn’t just a relic of a bygone era, he’s here with us, experiencing the same life as we are. I wish John and George could have seen it. P.S. Fuck Sky News

The part in Paul's tweet saying "we all play on it" is what gets me hyped more than anything else. A lot of not so great things are coming about from the recent boom in AI, but this certainly isn't one of them. Insane to think just what might have been locked away for decades that can now finally come out to the light thanks to this tech.
@jeffreyroedel9804 Жыл бұрын
Yeah there are studio sheets documenting that Paul, George, and Ringo all worked on Now and Then together for AT LEAST a full day that we know of (and perhaps they did things individually before or after that here and there), and back in the '60s the Beatles could record one, sometimes two songs in a day. So it's entirely possible George recorded multiple guitar parts and some vocals on that day that can now be used in the final mix for Now and Then.

My problem with Ai in music, specifically the making the “artist” sing a completely different song, is that it just creeps me out. In like a “the thing singing this song lacks any emotion whatsoever”. It feels off in so many ways to me. And I find it insane that people actually believed Paul would ever do something that to a man he considered his best mate. The thing about the AI songs is that the end product depends a lot on how much effort is being put in. Having AI piece together a performance by "learning" someone's voice sounds robotic, and using it to remodulate an existing vocal track is merely going to imitate the target's tone, while preserving the original singer's own vocal tics, which is also a terrible result. But where it gets interesting is when actual singers with an understanding of the performer they're replicating actually use AI as an assistive technology rather than a creative one. Take the KZbinr who goes by "McMusic": He actually sings a new vocal track imitating Paul's inflections and tics, which is then processed by AI, resulting in a track that sounds much more authentic than either of the lazier methods I described above. Without quibbling with Elliot's ethical objections to AI tracks, I do think using it as a tool rather than enshrining it as a creator in its own right is the way forward. It's a tool made to serve us, not a master to rule us.

Yes! Their vocals: the passion and soul and joy and pathos, so expressive …AND from the very FIRST recordings, from the SART. Which is the 1st thing that explains “Beatlemania.” The 2nd thing: all that expressive joy and passion was about REAL emotions of love and jealousy and loss and triumph-from the very START. 7:00 The only AI song that got me in the feels was "New" with John Lennon...'s voice taking some bits of the vocal. The last ♪Now we are New♪ was very Lennon and resonated with me. Lovely. The rest are crap. It's interesting to find out what actually goes into these AI versions. That is, some of these guys actually know how to sing, sing as close to Lennon/Macca as they can, and then let the robot take over. These are the best of the bunch, but even so, 90% of these are gimmicks and party tricks. It's not new music, it's just derivative. I believe in the human spirit to crave actual new frontiers and desire some measure of a human connection. I see it manifest every day here and there. Honestly, I'm not worried even if the entire history of recorded music is reformatted with a Macca version (assuming ol' MPL doesn't litigate the entire enterprise out of existence) because the novelty will wear off. Honorable mention, though, to the guy who did an entire piano cover of Strawberry Fields ala the few bars that Paul did during Get Back. He just sat as his own piano and did the song before sliding a little AI in there to make it sound like Paul did it in 1969 on his off hours. It's lovely, but (as I told him), I think it would've been just as lovely if the guy just put it out as his own voice as a cover. For him, it was a matter of courage and lacking thereof. Still lovely.

I strongly believe that AI is a tool that can be used for both good and bad things. What Peter Jackson has done with Now and Then is a good thing because it's being used as a tool to help with a creative project. Where AI goes wrong is when people use it to superficially continue the legacy of a person who's passed. Just as you've said, it's like propping up a dead person and using them as a puppet. 5:40 That comment is the epitome of how some of the general public think that The Beatles are their property. Imagine being obnoxious enough to think you can tell a Beatle how to Beatle. I don't recall Paul McCartney ever forcing anyone to put their hand in their pocket. I don't think it's anything to do with money either, but Paul's constant need to have a project on the go, in order to keep active. One thing you could never call that man, is lazy. He seemingly just can't bear to sit still. Surely recorded music is a form of artificial intelligence anyway, since you are not hearing someone's actual voice, but a reproduction of it. I want AI to progress quickly to the point where it can ensure that Paul McCartney lives forever.

I hadn’t even considered the sonic quality piece of AI but you’re right. I think about the Freddie Mercury AI covers that are going around, and it’s almost like the power and awesomeness of his voice gets lost in the technology. The listener can go, “Of course he can reach those notes or get that tone, a computer helped him do it all.” Yeah, AI covers with the voices of dead musicians not only make me uncomfortable, I would even go so far as to say they take almost all of the fun out of music.

Maybe we’ll even get some recordings of the demos of All For Love. A song George and Paul were writing together during the Anthology sessions. While the likely "Now and Then" track will be neat, the demixing tech gets me more excited about improving other stuff. Finally having stereo mixes as good as the 60s mono ones for the first six UK albums, vastly improved mixes for the films Help! and Magical Mystery Tour (the Blu-ray stereo and 5.1 mixes are a bit rough), or even going back to stuff on Anthology that wasn't in the best shape. As much as a purist I'd like to be, there's something marvelous about the new mixes for Sgt. Pepper and Revolver where you forget these are 50 year old recordings and it's one less barrier to getting new fans.

Part of what's wild about the track is there's better quality versions (from earlier generation cassettes) available since the late-2000s on KZbin. The big question, of course, is how George would be included post-hominisly. There's only been reports that the Threetles played around with the track for about a day (an afternoon according to Jeff Lynne) so I imagine the only work from that session from George would be at-best a spotty acoustic guitar track (if they actually laid down anything at all). Fans have been speculating Paul will slide in some guitar solo of George's from the archive... which I think is just a little more morbid than resurrecting an old Lennon demo from the 70s (morbid enough as that is).

I agree they should update Real Love, and even Free as a Bird. I like Free as Bird. Some of the Beatles early demos off Anthology would be amazing! Just as a alternative, because there is character with the hiss, and scratch.

Man i feel bad for Paul, he's always so eager to innovate with new ideeas and people in his band, in the media, or even his fans always criticize him for doing so, let the man work on his ideas, has not he given us so much already?

I think using AI mixing will be a revolution for legacy acts. Applying this new kind of mixing to old live recordings or lo-fi demos can result in stereo mixes that are much closer to studio quality! I think we can expect a full album of Lennon home demos remixed in this way sometime soon, as well as more Beatles live material like maybe Shea or Budakon or early stuff like the Star Club where all the instruments can be separated and mixed properly now. It's exciting times!

I’m not over the moon to hear Now And Then (if that’s what it is) but I’m definitely really interested to hear it. As for the AI things I’m pretty indifferent overall. Amusingly the video I liked the most is one where they sing Banana Phone, it was dumb phone and sorta had that wacky Paul song feel to it.

Man...can you imagine remastered Shea Stadium concert now? Or literally any of their stadium shows? You can enhance the Beatles and cut out those jet engine screams.
