You know the Beatle songs can be kind of tricky to figure out some are just songs to fill an album some have no meaning at all just playing with words Lennon loved to play with words and play with the fans to see how they react (like you) to their songs

The Beatles had more to say in their brief existence than perhaps the entirety of all of the rest of musicians in history. It is amazing what they had to say and how they put their thoughts forth musically.

I fell in love with the Beatles decades ago and I still listen to them all the time. They've been a big part of my life for many many years since I first heard them when I was 6 years old. And it's not just their music but it's also their personalities they were so creative and funny and quick-witted. And they cared a lot about people and their fans. So many things to love about the beatles.

In Across The Universe John is singing "Jai Guru Deva, Om" which loosely translates to "I give thanks to Guru Dev - Om". It would be used as a meditation chant. At the time it was rumored that if you played it backwords it said "God is good hash". (Hey, it was the 60's) The original version was donated to the world charity LP "No One's Gonna Change Our World (1969) for the benefit of the World WIldlife Fund. This is one of my favorite songs by The Beatles.

John and 1st wife Cynthia had gone to bed and proceeded to have an argument. As John was lying in bed, the words to Across The Universe started 'flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup'. The lyrics kept coming. So much so that John got out of bed and went to his music room and composed the entire song. John was very proud of these lyrics. Though he felt the other Beatles (particularly Paul) didn't give the song the respect it was due when it came time to the recording the song. Great reactions A R, RNB

It is interesting, that the Beatles, especially John Lennon, were never really satisfied with "Across the Universe". There is another, older, version (used for this WWF-organisation, Jeff Martin wrote it) with two girls from the fan-crowd in front of the Abbey Road Studio Paul McCartney had invited to sing this song. Lizzie Bravo from Brazil and Gayleen Pease from England. Lizzie still remembers that great moment in 1968, which everybody can see on her Facebook profile. Lennon said about the text: "I was lying next to my first wife (Cynthia) in bed, you know, and I was irritated, and I was thinking. She must have been going on and on about something and she'd gone to sleep and I kept hearing these words ("words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup") over and over, flowing like an endless stream. I went downstairs and it turned into a sort of cosmic song rather than an irritated song, rather than a "Why are you always mouthing off at me?" The words were purely inspirational and were given to me as boom! I don't own it you know; it came through like that." When NASA celebrated its 50th birthday in 2008, it broadcast "Across the Universe" in the direction of Polaris. The other track, "And I love her", has one of the nicest guitar accompaniments for a pop song of this kind.

This was the Beatles last top 40 hit in 1970 in the USA. It just missed the top 20 and was their swan song. However, the Beatles hit #1 here in 1997 with they release two songs from the Beatles Anthology documentary. It spawned two hits with vocals by John Lennon before his death. Produced by Jeff Lynn (ELO), the songs Free As A Bird (#1) and Real Love (top 20) were hits on the US singles chart.

And I Love Her, possibly the greatest love song ever written, highly ignored today and boxed in by big corporate media radio into easy listening music rather than just good music, no damn categories. George Harrison's guitar work on this is beautiful. Yet reactors hear this and are stunned by it's beauty. the world is just a sad and dumb attitude making the world musically ignorant....

Two great songs by the Beatles, but it would have been better to put side by side songs from similar time periods. And I Love Her was released in 1964 and Across the Universe was in 1970. For the Beatles, that was a vast difference.
