Famously, footsteps were made by Paul as he played guitar. George Martin didn't like this idea and was more in favour of beeps at random intervals. The pair were at loggerheads over which direction to go in. Eventually McCartney won out, but did agree to record a version with the beeps which influenced a young Brian Eno who was pottering about in the studio. It was released on limited edition vinyl and finally unearthed by 'Just a Beatles fan'.

Yeah, that's what he says, but I don't buy it. This song was out for years and years (maybe decades) before the civil rights angle was ever brought up. It is revisionist history. Great song, but just a nice ditty rather than the deep meaning he later gave to it.

Lots folks don’t know that the civil rights movement was really triggered by the racist murder of Emmitt Till. Basically he was a 14 year old black boy who visiting the south in 1954. He was accused by a WW of essentially flirting with her. She told her husband and his male relative. They in turn hunted down and murdered 14 year old Till. Here in the USA it was a frequent occur to have WS murdering black people for no reason. Courtrooms in the South were all white. White attorneys, white juries and white judges. Even the viewers were mostly white but blacks had to sit in the galleries. Black witnesses were rarely if ever taken seriously. In this trial, the WS had gone to Till’s uncle’s house and demanded that he turn over Till. If he didn’t do they would’ve killed everyone in the house. The WS took 14 year old Till, beat him, shot hi, tied a huge fan around him and threw him into the River. When he was found days later, his body was already decomposing. At the WS trial his uncle, when asked if the men who took Till were in the room, pointed right at the two men. The all white jury acquitted them. Till’s mom had an open casket funeral for him so that the world could see “what they did to my baby”. Black media covered this. I believe Jet put it on their cover. Years later the WS admitted guilt while interviewing with Life magazine. It was recently found that there was initially a warrant for the WW arrest but the sheriff blew it off. The WW recently admitted that she made the whole thing up. The govt has basically decided not to pursue the case which is some BS. Anyway this is what lit a fire under the movement, this was in 1954. Way before the Beatles Black Bird was released but it’s entirely possible that McCartney wrote it in response to the movement. “We were only waiting to be free” and in a sense were still waiting. To this day WS shoot up the road sign marking Till’s murder. That child is dead and gone yet they still hate a black child for being a black child.

The sun will soon come, and the warmth of light will mark a new day begun. With your broken eyes you will soon see, how clear life is if you'd just let it be. Paul McCartney wrote this song about the civil rights struggle for African Americans after reading about race riots in the US. He penned it in his kitchen in Scotland not long after an incident in Little Rock when the federal courts forced the racial desegregation of the Arkansas capital's school system. "I was sitting around with my acoustic guitar and I'd heard about the civil rights troubles that were happening in the '60s in Alabama, Mississippi, Little Rock in particular," he told GQ. "I just thought it would be really good if I could write something that if it ever reached any of the people going through those problems, it might give them a little bit of hope. So, I wrote 'Blackbird.'"
