@@jerrymammoser9857 got it. But I kinda feel like those who came before never really have much to say about the next gen. Like, did Buddy Rich have anything to say about Ringo? I dont know. What I DO know is that Dave Grohl is a great songwriter, multi instrumentalist, and was/is in two of the greatest bands of the 1990s. It would be like if McCartney joined Led Zeppelin after the Beatles.

@@BraeburnTV ... I like Dave Grohl. Buddy Rich was an incredible, indefatigable player, who was an asshole. Oh, he had plenty to say about Ringo. And it all was petty, uninformed bullshit. He said Ringo held his drumsticks “wrong”. Yeah. Can you believe that? He was a jerk. Buddy released an album, “The Roar of ‘74” (I think it was) where he tried to play rock. It was laughable. Just not in his toolbag. I assume by your knowledge that you play as well.

Pretty sure that's John's live guide vocal as well as the guitars and bass bleeding into the drum mics. They would record a live take then once they had one they were happy with would add overdubs. That's why in most of the isolated tracks you can hear some of the other instrumentation.

This drum part is so unusual. We take it for granted because we heard it millions of times, but the intros and bridges are the busiest, with the tom rolls. The verses are simpler, just kick and floor tom. The choruses are the simplest, just kick and snare. It's weird, wonderful and perfect.

I respectfully disagree. To my ears, the triplet tom roll clearly starts on the high tom (left hand lead), right hand moves to second tom, then floor tom. I really wanted to hear it differently given that Ringo himself at least once demonstrated it starting on the floor tom and moving up, but the recording doesn’t lie. Incidentally, what I heard and described lines up exactly with Drumeo’s tutorial. Go figure.

There's a KZbin video where Ringo demonstrates how he started on the floor tom and then played the ride tom (as it was called then). He said he did it that way because he starts fills with his left hand.
@daveh7050
@daveh7050 4 жыл бұрын
Hate to beat a dead horse, but the recording doesn’t lie. Check out the “isolated drums” version on KZbin and note how the pitch and timbre of the floor tom on the verses (Here come old flat top...) matches the ouch and timbre of the drum at the tail of the famous tom riff. The drum at the start of the riff is much higher, not just more deadened by the tea towels. The triplets start with the left hand, five in a row on T1 Before the right hand moves to T2 for one hit, then FT FOR two hits. (Left hand stays on T1 such that the triplets end up split between drums. Digest what I’m saying, then listen critically to the isolated track. Whether or not you agree, enjoy! Ringo has acknowledged that his memories of those sessions is (understandably) foggy. He may well have tried different patterns on different takes (I know I would have) and could be remembering one of those others. Definitely NOT *the* take though. ;-)

@@Wired4Life2 When recording the backing rhythm tracks, it was standard to have a 'guide vocal' from whoever would sing lead, so the band could follow along in the song and not get lost. If you listen carefully to the video, you can hear John's ragged, messy live vocals 'bleeding into' (being picked up by) the drum microphones. He's in the room singing live; George is on guitar, Paul is on bass and our Boy's on drums. The final, echoey vocal we all know was overdubbed a couple of days later.

The bass drum almost sounds like a cardboard box...

I love Ringo....I've been playing the drums for over 40 years... Ringo was one of my main influences...but that isolated bass drum sounds like a cardboard box to me... No real pitch, no sustain just a dead thud...This is my opinion... You resorting to calling me names shows me that you are brain dead and have no real opinion... I'm also not a big fan of throwing tea towels over my Tom tom's but it worked for Ringo....

Fact. Paul actually wrote and played the opening riff
@vigourinc5297

what's the source on this? George has specifically said Ringo did the drums on this track, and Ringo is credited with drums and maracas. It is also well known that Paul often had specific drum part suggestions (and general Ringo complaints), so isn't it more likely that he contributed to writing some drum parts but didn't perform them? (other than famously on a couple of the white album tracks)

John and Paul have both said the swampy arrangement was all Paul. Btw, Paul directed Ringo's playing throughout their entire career. Ringo was perfect for that band because he listened and figured out what "three frustrated drummers" (his words) wanted.

@@shoepermanbutthman2188 Here, for Chrissakes: Ringo Starr: "When we first started, they basically went John and Paul's way because they were the writers and they would say, "This is the song," and I would play as creatively as I could. Sometimes I would have three people telling me how to do it. They were saying playing this like on that track. I'm saying, "For Christ's sake, there are two drummers there." They could never hear that, you know. You'd have to have four arms to do half the stuff they wanted me to do." -- interview in Viva magazine (1978) Paul McCartney: "We always gave Ringo direction on every single number. It was usually very controlled. Whoever had written the song, John for instance, would say, "I want this." Obviously, a lot of things came out of what Ringo was playing, but we would always control it." -- from a 1980's interview record
