Man, can't say thanks enough, Marty. I've always loved Dear Prudence, but I swear, when you drill down into it, its a complicated, pain in the ass song to learn (for me, anyway). The picking pattern with the odd feeling triads... Idk, it just mixed me all up. It aeems so simple because if the repetitive nature, but it's far from that. It's quite tiring. Goes to show that John truly was a very very good guitarist (which I've always known, dude was super talented). Again, thanks Marty, you've made it a bit easier!

I learned that finger-picking pattern about 30 years ago! It took me about half a year before I really got to where I could play the pattern without thinking about it.

I have reason to believe John double tracked this guitar (it sounds like more than one guitar at times) one focusing more on the top pattern, the other the bottom thumb pattern, hence why it sounds so full.

I have the same problem as you with the pinkie. The strings would get muted with my fingers, and it would frustrate the hell out of me. Your method would probably be better for me but the transition looks pretty tricky. A beautiful song by The Beatles from the White Album. I did hear somewhere that The Beatles actually cheated on this track, and they used two guitar parts to make it easier to play. I don't know if there's any truth to this though. 😎🎸🎸

Thanks Marty. Very helpful! I don't have long fingers either. My solution to the D chord with descending bass is to bar the D chord with my index finger and then bring my ring finger over to fret the C. And then placing my index finger on the B, with my middle finger on the high E string and ring finger on the B string .

John learnt on banjo hence why he uses his little finger a lot I always called them Beatles chords when I was younger as the little finger seemed to be active in every song. John lived with his aunt I believe growing up he had a very strict upbringing. I think he was taken off his mother either at birth or when he was very young. He met his mother who didn’t live far from him when he was an older boy possibly teenage I think she was somewhat of an entertainer that’s where he learnt about rock n roll and how to play banjo he used to sneak round there to see her listen to music smoke and drink. I was told all this information from the trust that owned the house he grew up in sadly his mother was killed being ran over by a car which in late 50s north west England would of been quite a rarity. He had more than his fair share of trauma in his early life probably explains his flaws alongside his utter genius. Great vid Marty

Thank you, Marty for all the help you offer on your KZbin channel. I have had Guitars hanging on my walls for years that I can't play. I have tried a few programs but got frustrated and quit. You convinced me that putting a minimum of 5 minutes a day, that I will improve. (And I am a bit) I've learned a few chords now, and it's enough to keep me going. It's a slow go for me, for I also have short, large fingers. Still the more I practice, the less I am muting the other strings as much.

Thanks Marty, this was great! For anyone who sees this, I feel like I should share that I found it a bit easier to keep my pinky on the b string as I transitioned into the main riff, making the D shape with my index middle and pinky. You have to push your wrist outward and it feels a bit awkward, but you can play the main riff without letting off the b string this way. From my first day practicing there was quite a bit of soreness, but I think once I'm comfortable and can lessen the tension in my wrist it'll be the way I play it
