for more Beatle songs, try Norwegian Wood, Here Comes the Sun, I've Got To Get You Into My Life, Drive My Car. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, With A Little Help From My Friends... what really makes the Beatles stand out from the rest is how many great songs there are, and how original each song is

good that you threw the notebook away and went to enjoying the music for itself. Beatles will surprise you as you open up more to them. they will open up a new realm of where music can go. each was a terrific talent: John, Paiul, George and Ringo. they were part of the "British Invasion" that hit America in the sixties and took a generation on a ride.

Liverpool - in northwest England - was a river port town, very working class. All the commercial ships would come to deliver to England through that port. The Beatles were all born and raised in this blue-collar, working-class city, which still had bombed out buildings from the bombing in World War II. That port received all the records coming in from the US, including all the blues, R&B and rock-n-roll records, which all four of them listened to as teenagers. They formed a band, and they played in seedy clubs, and worked their way up the ladder rung by rung. That sound you hear is that bluesy port town echo. Their favorite singers were all roots rock and R&B artists.

"A woman named Yoko...or a person named Yoko... every Beatles fan has to smirk a bit at that! She was John's constant companion (save for Lennon's lost weekend phase, but that's another story). Lennon invited Yoko into Beatles recoding sessions, violating the group's rule of "no girlfriends in the studio-ever." She even dared to give advice about the songs being recorded, usually not directly but by telling Lennon what she thought. You can imagine how well this went over with the other three Beatles. When The Beatles broke up, she was just about universally blamed as responsible. She wasn't. She might have been a catalyst that hurried along something that was bound to happen anyway, given the inner conflicts of the 4 Beatles. She weathered the storm of universal outrage, though. "John and Yoko" went together in any sentence about his solo career. They organized peace protests together. She was a true artist in her own right, an influential artist in the Fluxus movement before she met Lennon. In many ways, you can't really separate the very late Beatles from Yoko's presence, nor any of Lennon's solo career. So, for Beatles fans, it is so weird to hear someone learning about "some woman named Yoko"! My brush with greatness story: About 20-25 years ago I was in an auction house in New York City. I got in the elevator to go up to the next floor, turned around, ...and watched Yoko Ono get on the elevator right next to me. Oh, and about a dozen other people, too. I wish I knew what to say to her! But I just played it cool and respected her space. But wow, I wish I knew what I could have said to her that she hadn't heard before and wouldn't make me appear to be a creepy Mark Chapman type. (For anyone who asks "who's Mark Chapman..." look it up.)

You WILL LOVE IT. All music exists within it's own self and has no colour bar (when they toured the states in 64 they refused to play to segregated audiences in the South. Also the only extra musician ever credited on their albums was Billy Preston, black keyboards player, also in the rooftop concert. A compliment indeed from the fabulous 4. The U.S. started Rock and Roll from Blues and Jazz music. This music would make it's way to England where young people heard it, became infatuated, and starting trying to emulate American groups. All failed until The Beatles, which created what was known as "The British Invasion" where British acts could finally succeed in America. They created the mold then broke it. They were the first group who wrote their own songs (although when they started, they often did covers). The group was started by John Lennon and included Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr (real name Richard Starkey) in Liverpool, England and began recording in 1962. They could all sing and were all multi-instrumentalists - both a rarity where often bands at the time only had one lead singer and often instrument skills were low. They were primarily pop/rock with flashes of psychedelia, blues, proto-punk, etc. They were known for complicated instrumentation and phenomenal harmonies. Fair warning - Beatles reactions often get blocked but I hope you do more of their music.

StART LISTENING TO MORE BEATLES SONGS Jojo! You can be a fan of them too, you know! I love ALL genres of music: classical, folk music, ethnic music, '30s, '40s (BIg Band like Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman), early 50's, '50s rock and roll, '60s, British Invasion, BEATLES of course, Motown, Girl Groups, the '70s, '80s, Broadway and movie musicals, Phantom of the Opera, Opera, country, Dixieland, Do Wop, mostly because my father was a musician full time during the Big Band era and played 4 instruments, beginning when he was 8 years old. He passed away last year at the age of 102 and was still playing gigs until he was 98 years old. Music was always on in our house when I was growing up (born in 1947), either Dad practicing, or mom listening to the radio or their large record collection, EVERYONE should be exposed to ALL types of music, it really is fulfilling and fun!

That means 2,5 songs per month. “Something” “Strawberry fields forever” “We can work it out” “Penny Lane” “Nowhere Man” “While my guitar gently weeps” “I am the walrus” “And I love her” “Here comes the sun” “Yesterday” “In my life” “Lucy in the sky with diamonds” “Revolution” “All you need is love” “Across the universe” “Come together” and a long long etc

The Beatles were always unique and changed rock and roll. When songs were coming out with clean cut lyrics like: Mrs. Brown you've got a lovely daughter. the Beatles came out with: I used to be cruel to my woman I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved, Man, I was mean but I'm changing my scene and I'm doing the best that I can (Getting Better). Songs like Don't Let Me Down are what projected The Beatles to be the best selling band in the history of music. I also think you should react to ABBA - they have sold almost 1/2 Billion recordings.

Hi! What I guess you don't realise is what the rest of the pop music of the time was like. It was, in retrospect, dire! When the Beatles arrived, their music blew everybody away. Even a simple track like "She Loves You" was miles ahead of the other bands of the time. And, yes, their stuff is dated now, of course it is - I'd be worried if it wasn't! But they sort of provided the foundation for all the bands that followed, and if they hadn't existed, I doubt we'd have some of the great current bands like Nightwish, Bloodywood, The Hu Band etc. "The Beatles always tend to surprise me." Every time they released a new album, it took a while to appreciate it, it was so different from the previous album. So, yeah, you'll always be surprised. Enjoy the journey!

Your comments are so honest and so instinctually spot-on, I love it! -- Yoko Ono changed John Lennon's life but also helped break up the band. Lots and lots of raw emotion circulated around her. Plus, the Beatles were not, in the beginning, the best musicians or vocalists, but together they had a knack for tapping into something basic that people just connected to, and they kept getting better and better as they matured and practiced their craft. Keep going down the Beatles rabbit hole... you won't regret it!

You have to understand - in the 1960s, the Beatles were the driving musical force. Other bands waited to see what they were doing before they would do anything. The music world would be much much different had they not broken up. The Beatles touched on just about every musical genre you can think of. When they broke up, there was no one to follow. Music splintered into several directions - singer/songwriters (James Taylor), punk (The Sex Pistols), progressive rock (Rush, ELO), rock (The Eagles) , heavy metal (Black Sabbath). If you go back into music since 1963, you will find just about every major group lists the Beatles as their primary influence. And, yes, Rap may not exist if not for the Beatles since Rap traces it roots to 70s groups who also claim the Beatles as their influence. Listen to John Lennon's "Give Peace A Chance" and you will hear the beginnings of Rap.

McCartney was the most prolific songwriter of the 20th Century and is still cranking them out in his 80s. It breaks my heart still that John and George died so young and tragically. Why? Both Paul and John lost their mother's at young ages. Let It Be is about Paul's mother. Ringo was a sickly child. He was left handed, but learned to play on a set of right handed drums. That's why his style is unique and hard to duplicate.

Pop music in those days was almost all about personal experience and emotion and loving and breaking up were the emotional highs and lows. By the mid 60's with the Vietnam war going on songs of protest, political songs, etc started to become popular. As for genre, there wasn't one since they were the creators of their own sound. Try an upbeat song with a fast tempo. Try Come Together for something REALLY different and try Get Back and the hymn like Let It Be.

Note; Hey Jude was not about a girl, it was written about John Lennon's son Julian.

And it wasn't about Julian. "Mother Mary comes to me" -- McCartney's mother died when he was 15; her name was Mary. So it isn't about anyone specific.

"The Beatles" made music; they didn't do "genre," they transcended all that.

The one thing I can't stress enough about The Beatles......you can't fully judge them by any couple of songs. Until you're at least like 15-20 songs in, you don't truly realize what makes them different. The difference from "Hey Jude" to "Yesterday" to "Here Comes the Sun" to "Helter Skelter" to "Come Together" to "Tomorrow Never Knows" to "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and so on.

Yoko Ono was John's girlfriend at the time. She was (is) an artist and they married in 1969.

Turning pain (heartbreak, injustice, loss, whatever) into beauty is one of the best thing music does. Music, comedy... any kind of art really.

Yoko Ono was the wife of John Lennon who wrote the song and is the one kinda screeching. He’s singing most of the lyrics in the song. The thing about the Beatles is the revolutionized pop music. Almost every band, group, and rapper after them wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them. They basically were the leaders of world culture during the sixties.
