You need not apologize for your speaking voice. Young lady, you are speaking a second language. That is most impressive and shows you have a very organized mind. I can barely speak English and it's my first (and only) language. One of Paul original unused lyrics for Eleanor Rigby was "Ola Na Tungee, blowing his mind in the dark with a pipe full of clay.' Keep up the fine work A R. You're doing great!! RNB

Those are two great Beatles songs to listen and react to. I was just listening to both of them yesterday. I've been telling reactors to listen to I'll be back for a while and nobody's done it yet. Hopefully she will soon. I love playing that song on the guitar it's a great guitar song.

The "face that she keeps in the jar by the door" is the makeup she puts on her face for whoever comes over to see her, but no one ever comes.

To me the face she keeps in a jar by the door means she puts on a personality and way of presenting herself for the public when in private she is much different --- She is sad and lonely and probably very depressed but if someone comes to visit her she smiles and is cheerful and gracious -- no one would recognize her true state of being--- thats what makes Eleanor so tragic

No disrespect meant but the face in the jar is the face she puts on when she has to face the world and other people that’s why it’s by the door. It not lipstick and mascara. It is a song about intense loneliness. She isn’t invited to the wedding she picks up the rice afterwards

'Eleanor Rigby' was a very deep and sad song to come out in 1966 about the plight of elderly people who were not able to find love in their life. A companion piece to this one is 'She's leaving home' which again deals with a sad topic but has a happy ending...

One of Paul's songs on loneliness. He wrote a few of these songs where he shows a great understanding of the characters he created. I would group 'Eleanor Rigby' with some of his other ballads like 'Yesterday', 'For no one', and 'She's leaving home', all extraordinarily mature writing, both lyrically and melodically, for someone still in their 20's. I think he felt deep empathy with his characters. Paul McCartney lost his mother at a young age (like his bandmate John Lennon did too) , and throughout his life he appears to have held things in and put on an upbeat face. He never showed grief, at least not in public, when their first manager, Brian Epstein, died or his first wife, Linda, and even when his best friend John Lennon was shot. His response to George Harrison's death was also very reserved but you can tell he is keeping it together for the cameras. I think he has been unjustly criticised for this lack of a public display of his feelings, I think he was acutely aware the press wanted to exploit his reactions just to get headlines. Paul more than shows he has deep emotions by expressing them through his music, he has given more than enough already to the world, his inner feelings are his own private affair,

Eleanor Rigby is a spinster woman who lives alone. With no family to speak of. She is very poor and picks up the rice at weddings to bring home and cook so she can have something to eat. Father McKenzie, from the church, and Eleanor Rigby's lives intersect after she passed. The good Father reads the Last Rights, to no one. Since nobody came to pay their last respects to the now departed Eleanor Rigby. I love your channel Annoited Reaction..

When you get a lot of early Beatles songs heard, those up through 1964, you'll be ready to experience their first cool movie, "A Hard Day's Night" (1964). It's best to know the songs you'll hear in the movie first, just as we when it came out back then. For more earlier songs like Eleanor Rigby try, "Can't Buy Me Love", "And I Love Her", "I Feel Fine", "I Should Have Known Better" and the song itself "A Hard Day's Night". You'll like these!! ✌️😎

Eleanor Rigby was a real person. She died at the age of 44 and her gravestone is located in St.Peters' Graveyard Woolton, Liverpool England. The significance of this is that, way back in 1957, Paul met John at a 'party' that was held on the grounds of the church. John and Paul would take shortcuts through the church grounds and graveyard in their "Quarrymen" days before they became the Beatles.

When a door is partially opened it is referred to as being 'ajar'. However, most of the places you will go to for lyrics will print it as 'a jar'. This gives it a happily and possibly unintentional surreal quality. Basically, Eleanor was likely a lonely spinster who spends her days peeking out her doors but rarely venturing out. Either that or she can take it off and store it for freshness in a Mason jar by the door.
@mikek59583 жыл бұрын
No it's "a jar by the door." Paul is describing a jar of cold-cream that she wore in an effort to look younger. "Who is it for?" because she was a lonely, old woman and there was no one to really care what she looked like.

I think you got the meaning behind Eleanor Rigby fairly spot on. "All the lonely people....". She picks up the rice where a wedding has been, lives in a dream, who is "her face" for- no one. The Beatles do not play any instruments on the song, it is just Paul and John on vocals. The strings were hired in and their music was composed by George Martin, the producer. The video for this song from their movie Yellow Submarine actually captures the song quite well. As for No Reply it seems to me the girl has moved on with her life and found someone else/better. The singer wants to control her, he stalks her and claims no one could love her more/better. She should confront him and tell him their relationship has ended instead of just walking away from him, but I think the song shows her having good reason to move on. Carry On!!

George also sang on the chorus, "I Look at All the Lonely". Interestingly, he did not sing "people", that was just John and Paul (by design).

Great review! You are certainly right love, Elenor Rigby is a Paul song. Personally being of a certain older age, lol, when I hear the line , ' wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door', makes me think of people from my grandparents generation. About Eleanor Rigby. People say that it is about a lonely woman ,who can`t find love or interact with people . Now that it is Remembrance Sunday yet again ,I am reminded of my teenage years when I was first at work. This was in the 1950s and we teenagers cruelly laughed at women like Eleanor Rigby and there were many of them .We assumed in our immature young ways that the women were too unattractive to have found a partner willing to love them but now I realise that the tremendous loss of lives of young men in the Great War meant that Eleanor ,for example ,may well have lost a fiance in the fighting and never recovered from the loss .If she was elderly when the song was written ,she would have been just of the generation to have been affected.

Once again the group carve out two songs that stand on their own. A Hard Day's Write (Steve Turner publication) claims that Paul liked the name Eleanor Bron (Actress) and the shop name Rigby & Evens Ltd in Bristol. Did he know about Eleanor Rigby's grave (1895-1939) in Woolton, Liverpool? He claims not but admits it may of been a sub-conscience occurrence? Thanks for sharing - Liked.

A lady I worked with was from Poland and was under COMMY rule by the old USSR as part of the Eastern Block of countries and Western culture like Rock and Roll music was forbidden so this lady told me that one time a close family she grew up with down the street from her one of the kids brought home a rock album don't know the band but the whole family was arrested just because one of the kids brought home a record of some rock band from the West and the whole family had to pay the price. interesting how times change... No Reply is basically sung from the point of view of a stalker.... wouldn't be allowed today... but a great song!!!!... this is definitely a John song, and Eleanor Rigby is definitely a Paul song.... these are perfect examples of the two main sides of the Beatles...I think the "face that she keeps in a jar by the door" was an old fashioned expression that means that she wore a lot of makeup.... there won't be videos of these songs that the Beatles had anything to do with, but would be made years later

NO REPLY is a John song he seems to be checking on his girlfriend who is cheating on him and he is checking on her seeing that she is home she can see him through the window staring up at her and he sees her with another guy but he forgives her for all these sins and still loves her. RIGBY is a Paul classic a little backstory to this song is that in a graveyard in Liverpool where the young Beatles would hang out in this graveyard Paul says one time he may have seen the name Elinore Rigby and just popped into his head and made the song about it. He wanted the one line to say FATHER MCCARTNEY but thought that was too tacky and changed it too McKinsey
