Once again, Michael, a terrific video. We all know The Beatles will never be touched in the world of music. It is indeed ludicrous to put Taylor Swift in the same category as John, Paul, George and Ringo. Everyone with a pulse knows there is no equal to the Fab Four. The Beatles were a worldwide phenomenon that never seemed to end. We, as their fans can consider ourselves blessed because we got the privilege of listening to them.

Nice commentary Michael. I’m from Adelaide, South Australia. I wasn’t around, but when the Beatles toured in ‘64, 350,000 people lined the streets from the Airport to the centre of town ( to the Hotel where the Beatles were staying). It is now acknowledged that this crowd was the largest in the world to greet the Fab Four To put into perspective, Adelaide’s then population wouldn’t have been more than half a million. Assuming that the very elderly or babies didn’t attend, then basically the whole population turned out!! That is a phenomenon in the purest sense of the word! In the 70s, 80s and beyond, every new act or band, was immediately compared to the Beatles, as in..”is this the new Beatles’” but alas, there would never be another, in fact, I think their star shines brighter now because as years and decades have rolled past, we have come to realise everything else that has followed has just been a pale imitation. Cheers.

Michael, another excellent video!! Probably the best comment i can make about The Beatles, is they had a "magic" that no other musical artist before or since has EVER matched!! It wasn't just Lennon & McCartney. Harrison & Starr - with the incredible textures they wove into the songs - were every bit as important. The Beatles were four, & nothing less!!

Other than The Rolling Stones, who actually recorded a whole album of new material, The Beatles might be the oldest musical act still on the charts for the end of 2023. It is strange seeing an aging Paul and Ringo, mixed in with younger images of John and George at drastically earlier ages. It is kind of creepy bringing those two deceased mop heads back from the dead like Frankenstein.

Hi Michael, your tasteful presentation was again intelligent, articulate, succinct, and phenomenal. Thank you. As a young boy in 1964, the Beatles taught me (and millions) everything about the art of music excellence by listening to them morning, noon, and night. The Beatles are ingrained in our global collective conscience, unifying cultures, societies, countries, and generations throughout the world. The Beatles triumphantly raised the bar of intelligence and sophistication before and since. As you well point out, the Beatles will forever remain repeated universal phenomena as a group as well as individually. Comparing anyone to them is entirely pointless.

If there was a technology that counted every time a Beatles album was played on a home record player into a "streaming" database that counted toward Billboard Hot 100 points, the Fab Four would have 200 Top 40 and 150 Top 10 hits. The "release every track as a streaming single" model of today makes comparisons between eras impossible. The fact that Billboard does this has made their charts long since irrelevant for historical purposes.

Dear Michael, I enjoyed watching your video. I don’t begrudge Taylor Swift, Madonna, and Drake their success. They are not in the same category as the Beatles. The Beatles played an important role in shaping and revolutionizing rock. Their music evolved into something beautiful, emotional, entertaining, humorous, and thought provoking. The Now and Then video brought me to tears. My response was unexpected. I don’t believe there will be another band that will come close to their influence and success.

Very well put! Ringo once said (and I think the clip is on KZbin somewhere), that there would be another Beatles someday. I think he's correct in terms of 'numbers' (as you mentioned regarding Taylor Swift and her chart stats), but I don't think there will be another Beatles in terms of influencing our culture and society the way that they did. Early on, the Beatles managed to appeal to teens and their parents, partly due to their first film. Adults could see these guys were smart, funny, and all of a sudden realize that (even in the early days) the music wasn't just a pop fad. As the 60's progressed, they shaped the youth culture of the time by being a mirror to it (being influenced) and by being a leader in it (being influencers). They took and gave back and moved forward. When you bought a Beatles record (particularly after 1966) and put it on, you not only were entertained by some great music, you were also challenged to listen to the lyrics and get into the philosophies and ideas these guys were into. It was music for your heart and your brain. The times were so different, and as you mentioned the world was much smaller. People went to the store to buy records because there was no internet to listen to songs on demand. Your only option was to listen to the radio and hope the single would be played again soon. So you had to part with your hard earned money to listen to your favorite music. In the Beatles' era, they vastly outsold the competition, and what competition they had! Look at the great songs of the day by the other British Invasion groups, by all the wonderful American groups, Motown artists, etc. I'm not knocking any modern artist, I think Drake, Madonna, Taylor Swift have talent and I'm happy for their success. But they did not have the same impact on society as John, Paul, George and Ringo.

Taylor Swift popularity does not measure up to her talents which is mediocre at best. There are so many newer artist out there who are much more talented then Swift who do not get the attention they deserve in today's mainstream music. Swift and the people around her are brilliant at marketing her and I bet if she did not have her good looks she would not be nearly as popular as she is today. Sad state of today's popular music.

If you listen to music from the 40's right through to now, you get an understanding of what was, what is and what will be. In that space of time there is much repetition, everyone copies music that's of it's time from Blues to Rock and Roll, ballads to soul, pop to heavy metal, garage to grunge, glam to disco or psychedelic to rap. Not in any particular order, a common theme was if you found a new beat you stuck to it. Along come The Beatles, defying all odds, whatever they put their collective minds too, would never be repetitive or sound familiar to whatever was there before them. In 6 short years they did more for all forms of entertainment than any other person, group or art in any type of genre. You don't defy endurance by just being there, you have to be able and willing to find that X factor that keeps you ahead of whatever is coming second. The biggest drawer back to music was early 70's heavy metal guitar solos, followed by disco, 80's synthesised pop, then finally rap. If you wanted to end musical entertainment, it is being achieved by what is out there today. Just like Rome we are destroying ourselves from within. The Beatles have never been a part of that, they were always on the outside looking in.

Michael, always love your perspectives on anything to do with music. I'm still a little surprised that music now 60 years old and more should still resonate as strongly as it does in the age of Taylor Swift although I really shouldn't be given the ground breaking nature of much of the Beatles music. Still remember trying to decide whether to spend my pocket money as a kid on She Loves You or 24 Hours from Tulsa from a city department store in the early 60's. Went with the Fabs and ended up buying all their stuff and regret not one dollar spent on singles, LP's, CD's and concerts (Beatles once, Macca (several) and Ringo and his troupe of old rockers). Might pick up the red compilation for the remixes of the older songs.

Pretty amazing considering they were at quarter strength while solo. Between the Beatles and the Solo singles you are looking at something around 36 #1 hits in the US, and far far more Top 10 hits.

At the risk of being blunt Drake is a fool. A wealthy fool but a fool nonetheless. Taylor Swift is a talented, smart businesswoman who is enjoying a generational run of success. Regardless of whatever numbers contemporary artists post, the world will not forget about The Beatles. Fifty years from now people will be discussing and analyzing The Beatles music. They might not celebrate it in much the same way we do but they will not be forgotten. Look at the music of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven. Maybe they aren’t discussed in the mainstream anymore but they are certainly honored and appreciated by those who are aware of fine art. That’s where The Beatles are headed when all of us are no longer here. The twenty-first century denizens will have Taylor Swift or whomever but the folks who truly love and appreciate music will always pay homage to The Beatles.

Might as well say it as it is: it is the same old story that metrics by which "success" is measured really don't mean much. For example, even if you are talking simply about making money from touring, which of the following is better? (1) Grossing $50M in 10 concerts, or (2) grossing $100M in 30 concerts? The second would be higher on the list of highest grossing tours, but, if I were a performer, I'd go for (1), because I only have to do 1/3 of the work and still walk away with stack of cash big enough to do pretty much anything I might want! At any rate, here's the real comparison between the Beatles and TS: Despite all her commercial success, I've never seen any serious discussion or analysis of the merits of Swift's music. I may have missed it, but all discussion I've seen has simply been about her commercial success, as an end in itself. Her success probably has a lot to with current woke bandwagons which positively discriminate in favour of strong women. It seems to me that a lot of people buy TS music because she is a role model in some socio-political sense, which is fine, I guess, but it doesn't have much to do with the music and is of no relevance to me personally. Still, Paul McCartney hasn't done badly for himself. He has been a billionaire for quite some time now. Until recently, he was well ahead of the rest of the pack. He did get the rewards that he deserved. If others less deserving get the same or more, that's unfortunate, but life ain't fair! Also, the music industry back in the Beatles heyday was very different to what it is today. Back then, sales depended more (but certainly not entirely) on the merits of the music. Nowadays, success is more about the marketing and promotion and whether you fit the desired sociopolitical profile. The industry makes the artist successful these days, not so much the music. Beyonce is another good example. Musically unremarkable, but a fairly wholesome and strong young African-American woman goes down well as a role model in today's society. In a way, the Beatles are analogous to Alan Turing and Swift to Bill Gates. The former paved the way for the latter to capitalize on their legacy and reap greater rewards.

By any chance, Michael, did you add up album sales by the four lads through 1980 to see if that would beat out Drake or Swift? Just curious.

When did the Beatles officially end..... well apparently 10th April 1970. But of course because of Legal battles that part of 'The End' was 29th Dec 1974 .... When was N&T Written by JL...? Apparently in the LATE 1970's. (1977?)...so it begs the Question HOW IS THIS A BEATLES TUNE ?? ... It sounds like a JL tune.... Just asking the question.... Don't get all hateful, I just wonder how many others see this for what it is..... as opposed to what (obviously ) many want it to be....

if all four accept it to be a Beatles song it is..Simple as that, just ask the band members. And John would be okay with it, its maybe even about Paul and he considered working with Paul on it.

Thank you for the grand video. Defending the Beatles is unnecessary, but it is genuine fun. The one defense point that could be made for Swift, Madonna, and Drake is that there is only one of them against four members of the Beatles.

I couldn't name one Drake or Taylor Swift song. Their new albums get at least ten hit singles because of instant downloads. The music industry that put out physical albums and singles was replaced with some other method. The way albums chart are totally different as well.

Is Taylor Swift or Drake the biggest? Geez, everytime I go to add a gif comment on facebook for example or in particular I am inundated with K-pop gifs. If I enter Clint Eastwood into the box It got 1000 k-pop gifs. I believe k-pop is an intelligence op used on North Koreans but don't understand why facebook promotes them so much. Their online plays are ridiculous. I also believe the Beatles and rock music in general was an intelligence op(not that they were privy to the inner workings)but it was far more entertaining. I cannot name you 1 song by Taylor Swift, Drake's cakes? Sounds like a stomach ache at 52 years old. Twitter by the way didn't show me k-pop(music search term)but showed me Swift being interviewed by Barbara Wah Wah. Music industry is pretty fake. I'd argue a lot of young people love the Beatles. They're not getting any record contracts or anything or promotion though. I can remember a time as a kid, nearly or about a decade or so AB(after Beatles)and if you gave the big knob on the stereo a really good spin you would find 4-5 Beatles songs playing. Granted payola but it's also what radio stations thought would sell products better. Easy listening to classic rock stations and even occasionally a hardrock station would play a Revolution or Helter Skelter. B'aus'tin.

I just like em.☮️ Can only compare em to Mozart or Beethoven imo. And when John Paul Geo or Ringo, spoke of their beautiful artists that inspired em they were truly humbled by Smokey, L Richard, Chuck, Fats, Elvis, Buddy, Shirrels, Dylan et .

Swift holding all of these spots in the Top Ten simultaneously doesn't hold a candle to when the Beatles did it. Swift had every song off of one album released as "singles" (whatever that means today) at the same time. Very different situations. Imagine if her listeners had to drive to a record store and plop down 2 bucks for every physical copy of the song they wanted to hear. I doubt those "singles" would have done as well.

The Beatles changed the taste in music of a generation. Is that a claim that Swift fans make? I’m serious. I don’t know. I DO know she has cultural clout because of social media. The Beatles did too….without tweets, Instagram, FB or TikTok etc. Not cutting down Swift. Just saying that The Beatles did much more with what was available at the time.

They had to go to top ten to beat the Beatles. If one looks at the most number one hit songs in the USA, the Beatles have the most at 20 number one hit songs. It would probably be twenty-four because they had five songs that charted at 1, 2,, 3, 4 and 5 at the same time. That is more than any other singer or band,. Taylor Swift - 11 number 1 hit songs Madonna - 12 " " Drake - 13 " " If their solo works are included, an additional 17 songs can be added: 9 Paul, 3 John , 3 George and 2 Ringo. That is a total of 37 number one hit songs. No one else comes close.

Love and respect to Taylor but another thing to mention is the demographics. Mostly Taylor's audience consist of young women or girls similar to the Beatles in their early years (the period the Red Album covers), but the Beatles expanded their audience over time to the point where the Fabs have fans of all ages and of all genders and even non-binary. It remains to be seen whether Taylor can expand her fan base as well over time.

With all due respect to Taylor Swift, I don’t think she will expand her audience beyond her current demographic. Then again I’m not sure if she’ll need to. Occasionally in music we have seen artists come along who build such a successful career for themselves along gender lines that they don’t need to expand their demographic. Point in case I’ve been a fan of Bruce Springsteen since the eighties. I’ve gone to around fifty concerts in that time and while there is always a smattering of women and young folks in the audience the vast majority of Springsteen’s fans are the male audience (now predominantly settled into their fifties-seventies) who grew up with him since the nineteen seventies. I would assume the same is true for an artist like Carole King but in reverse. I can’t envision many men tailgating outside a venue before heading in to hear her sing renditions of songs from “Tapestry”.

I just listened to the new albums on my Apple Music Hi Res Lossless thru my FiiO DAC on my iPhone 14 and Bose earphones and I must say there has NEVER EVER EVER been a better band. Even The Floyd and Zep don't really compare to the depth of talent. Am I wrong?

I frankly am not keen on today's music, however its a totally different world of convenience and short attention spans. I think its the demise of radio. You had to listen to what was served and that's not always a bad thing.
