• Revitalized Beatles: 2...
• 1960's British Music I...
This is a remix of Giles Martin's 2023 official remix of The Beatles' classic "I Am The Walrus." He likely received more criticism for this remix than any other, as many felt he strayed too far from the original. With this in mind, I aimed to bring his remix closer to the original while still incorporating his improvements and capturing the essence of the 1967 stereo recording. For example, in my remix, you'll notice the long fade-out sounds more like the original, as this is where Giles added extra sounds that weren't part of the original. If they were present, they were buried so deeply that no one could hear them.
In the first half of the recording, I removed the phasing effects from John Lennon's lead vocal. Giles added phasing in the first half, likely to match the prominent phasing effects in the second half. To me, this phase shift beginning in the second half is an essential characteristic of the song. Originally, phasing, or flanging, was used to carry the stereo image throughout the entire song. The added on-air radio transmissions were placed within the recording live during the 1967 mono mix, which couldn't be recreated during the stereo mix, so faux stereo was employed from the mono to maintain a somewhat stereo image. The only other change I made in this part of the recording was to fix the drop in cello volume that connects the first half with the second. Perhaps this drop was intentional, but it isn't present in the original.
The final change I made was to make the long fade-out sound more like the original. As mentioned earlier, this is where Giles made artistic decisions that frustrated many long-time listeners who couldn't accept such a drastic change.
This project has been my most requested, and I have to admit I was very reluctant to approach it. I'm one of the few who enjoyed Giles' remix, but the original will always be my favorite. However, once I realized that his changes could be applied in a way that stayed true to the original, I accepted the challenge! This was a tough one, and I truly hope you enjoy it. Either way, thanks for listening!

I generally am rather fond of the Giles Martin remixes. But I felt he was somehow asleep at the wheel for this one as released on the Blue Album in 2023, especially the end starting around 3:15, which completely lost the “fairy dust” and mystery of the original. And Holy Smokes. You not only give the sound of the band a drive and muscle here I’ve never heard in this song, while never losing the spirit, you’ve made the fadeout clear and true yet integral to the vibe of the original. I’ve probably studied this song, especially the end, more than any other audio that exists. I’m guessing I’ve heard it 1000 times at least. And what you’ve done here is wonderful. Thank you.

Meanwhile home-brew remixers have taken the clean, crisp, wide stereo mix of "Walrus" and using spectral demix algorithms have moved the drums and bass to the middle. Every time the official remixers go back to the multi-tracks and try to reinvent the original versions it always sounds off in one way or another. The vintage EQs get ignored, the compression is off, and literally every element gets it's own dedicated reverb. In the end you get a wonky disjointed mix that doesn't gel or swing. Even in 2015 when they tried to exactly reproduce the original mixes for the "1" CD the mixes lacked any sparkle/excitement and sounded muted as if they shaved off all the high end to make them sound "vintage" (who knows).

I had no dictionary at the time (I was 13) Then what does sitting on a cornflake waiting for the van to come means ? And what about that semolina pilchard climbing up the Eiffel Tower? The deed was done and I was struck for the rest of my life. I am 71 today, and still intend to remain struck for a lot of years! John still rules OK! :^)

Why are the strings - especially on the right channel - so dull, so attenuated in the treble range compared to the rest of the mix? A de-esser would also have been necessary. Please do not misunderstand: I generally find your work admirable and self-sacrificing. Just keep going.
@britt2001b
@britt2001b Ай бұрын
I understand. I did not touch the strings from Giles remix other than to raise the volume of the cello while it was isolated during the break. I've noticed that a recording loses some of its' 'shine' during the de-mixing process. Perhaps this is what you're hearing. Also, KZbin highly compresses the audio during the upload, this could lend to what you're hearing. The final result is a long way from audiophile. I appreciate your comment and thanks for listening!
@britt2001b
@britt2001b Ай бұрын
I'm hearing what you're hearing now that I've actually listened to my mix on KZbin as a viewer would. The right channel is dull. I don't hear this when listening on my KZbin studio page where I monitor the video and audio before and after publishing. I don't make a habit out of listening on the actual KZbin page as they have been known to accuse creators of padding the views. Perhaps they are compressing the signal more than usual because of overall traffic. Just don't know but I hope it gets corrected! Try re-listening later and hopefully you'll hear the true mix. Sorry about this!

I have to admit, when I first heard GIles' new remix, I thought it was interesting and added something. But after several listens, I found it quite irritating that he chose to take some of the liberties he took to perhaps "modernize" the track. Britt....you've modernized it without taking away any of the essence the Beatles had in mind when they recorded and produced the song, including all of the randomness, especially at the end, where they mixed in the radio broadcast of Shakespeare. George Martin and the Beatles would be so proud of this mix. The video also drips of psychedelia!! Thank you!! Just brilliant! Dig, DmGrk

@@SilverHammer1969 I think I've found a way to make the Giles remix more interesting. For me, part of the fun and excitement of the original mix was the movement of the vocals across the stereo stage. Giles did away with that in his 2015 remix. I'm replicating that movement combined with the improved sonics from his mix and so far, so good. I seem to be having some success in placing the instrumentation back to their original positions also. I think some would say "why do this?" "just listen to the original." But this would bring back the fun of the original with the addition of improved sonics. By improved sonics, I mean that Giles apparently extracted earlier generation takes from the multiple bounces The Beatles created from only having a 4-track recorder at that time. Thanks for the inspiration!

A true masterpiece, daring, avant-garde, that even today sounds as fresh and modern as it did almost sixty years ago thanks to its complex and surreal lyrics, its unusual and hypnotic melody and the brilliant arrangements by George Martin, which elevate the song to unsuspected levels. Let's not forget that this song was mixed on four channels, almost sixty years ago... Thanks for sharing your talent britt200!

This mix really allows The Beatles to shine with greater clarity and power. This is especially true of Ringo's creative, inventive drumming. But that clarity is also apparent throughout the entire recording and, as an enormous Beatles super fan, it is greatly appreciated.

You don't want clarity, you want blend. That's why it's called a "mix".
@alanstein5930
@alanstein5930 Ай бұрын
@@TTM9691 , the two terms are not mutually exclusive! You want a "blend" of voices, instruments, and other elements, that allows the listener to hear all elements clearly. The mix may determine, among other things, how prominently each element is emphasized or de-emphasized. But the sounds of all elements should be clear rather than muddy. This clarity helps the listener feel enveloped in the sounds so as to allow the listener to feel like the singers and musicians are right there beside the listener rather than at a substantial distance from the source of the sound. And that sensation of the artist being right beside the listener is precisely where "clarity" does its magic.

Your remix sounds new and, in my opinion, it doesn't look like either the original or the Giles remix. It sounds unusual. The orchestration took a back seat. It became a little empty. There is not enough confusion and controlled chaos. In the video sequence, I liked Edgar Poe singing Cu-Cu Cu-Chu... This is a godsend!
@britt2001b

The orchestration is straight from the Giles remix. I only raised the cello a bit while it was isolated in the break. Glad Edgar was a hit! Thanks for listening!

Where did you find the extra drumming Ringo does all the way through the fade out? Past the 4:55 mark I believe. I’ve heard isolations where the drumming stops at least 90 seconds too soon? Am I missing an easy explanation like the original 1967 Mono and Stereo mixes are different ?
@britt2001b
@britt2001b Ай бұрын
The extra drumming comes from the 2010 remastered stereo 'Blue' album release. I haven't checked it with the 1967 stereo release but sometimes a remaster can carry a longer fade out (or sometimes shorter).

Hi. The biggest lesson to be learned from your very respectful mix is that Gilles and co. allowed outside forces, and a lack of empathy for history to overly influence their approach. So much of what they have done detracts from the historic relevance of the original recordings. I can only give them a mild passing grade for Pepper, but do not accept as necessary or enjoyable any of the other mixes thus far. The changes to Abbey Road are shocking and disturbing in light of the fact that it is pretty much a flawless album in the original form. No amount of claiming that "centered vocals" and "louder bass and drums" are essential to keep Beatles music relevant can explain the hubris they have shown for most of their efforts thus far. I cringe when I think of what they are likely to do with Rubber Soul.

As a HUGE Beatles' fan for the past 60-plus years, I love this mix of "I Am The Walrus" but as far as this video goes, it's very cool and definitely reeks of 1967, but (and far be it for me to be critical) it would've been better to have shown certain images at the moment the lyrics were sung i.e., Edgar Allen Poe and the policemen in a row.........be that as it may, this is one of Beatle John Lennon's best songs!
@britt2001b
@britt2001b Ай бұрын
Thank you, I'm glad you loved the mix. I see and respect your point but I purposely disjoined the images with the lyrics to create a more surreal atmosphere demonstrating the illusion of time and space. Not sure if it worked, but 'I Am The Walrus' seemed to be a great opportunity to experiment with this! To me, matching images with lyrics can sometimes get a bit cheesy. Planting an image before or after the thought can break the mundane. Thanks for listening!
