The Beatles in EMI Abbey Road Studios - And I Love Her (Complete Session Footage) February 1964

This is earliest known footage of the Beatles inside EMI Studios at Abbey Road. On Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th February 1964, they worked on the new track And I Love Her for the "A Hard Day's Night" to be released later in the year.
This black and white newsreel footage originally featured NO MUSIC from the Beatles and was completely SILENT - the broadcaster later placed narration over the top, I added music from the Hard Day's Night album sessions and few other later sessions to pad out.
In the footage you will see the band working on the harder rockier version as heard on Anthology 1, then on the softer version with the Spanish guitar as heard on the official 1964 release.
The footage is not in chronological order so you may have to work out which day is which via clothing and the instrumentation.
Those featured in the footage are the Beatles, George Martin and Norman "Hurricane" Smith, Mal Evans, Neil Aspinall, Alun Owen (Script Writer of A Hard Days's Night)

Between all that joking around they worked really hard. According to George Martin and the results that we all know. I love how they had so much fun together. I love them so, and I will love them forever. Their music has been the tapestry that holds my life together in happy times and sustained me at the hard times. The memories of an easy time, the loved friends and some are now gone but the Beatles music has been the thread that holds everything together and makes me happy and always will. God bless my beloved Beatles 🙏 Thank you for posting this 💐

The humor/silliness/distractions are part of creative evolution with these guys because mixed in is the musical evolutionary process. Creative development is not linear. Someone like George Martin recognized this in these 4 guys and that style in the studio exploded exponentially over the years.

@@perniciousreaper4393 A disparaging and ignorant statement. The "creative process" is not one particular thing. The fact that they clowned around so much just means that they wasted some time before settling in. That was THEIR way of doing it. And maybe it wasn't even the best way, but they were so good they managed to let their skill come through in the end. But it is, by no means, "the creative process."

Absolute nonsense. George Martin said that in the early days his only real work was getting a good balance of voices and instruments. There was no “production” that could be done on two or four track recordings. He couldn’t change the way they played or sang. Martin had a stable of artists and no amount of “production” could make them any better than what they were, pretty standard, often mediocre pop. And often it was when The Beatles ignored Martin’s advice and went with their instincts that they innovated. For example when Martin said he thought the last jazzy harmony on the “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” refrain of She Loves You was old fashioned and not very Rock and Roll but it was those idiosyncratic touches that caught everyone’s attention.

Along with George Martin and the sound engineers they basically invented modern rock and pop recording by just hacking away at it in the studio and trying everything until they found out what works and why. We are the beneficiaries of their finished product but it's fascinating to see and hear these behind the scenes and get a sense of how it was all made and went from raw ideas and sounds to polished recording.

My first guess would be somewhere in the Get Back sessions, as they were nearly constantly recording then, for the movie, rather than just hitting record for takes. Paul sounds so apologetic when he makes any errors - because he thinks he SHOULD be able to get it right - and he doesn't want to waste anyone's time and energy on HIS errors. Didn't expect to hear what sounds like very a quote from Got To Get You Into My Life at 3:27 - isn't that one a couple of years early?

Is this footage Public Domain? If not would anyone know how I could license it for a student documentary?

What boggles my mind is how the stuffy EMI white shirt ties we always hear about tolerated all the joking about. I guess that's what a hit album or two under your belt will buy you.

Looking for a contract for his band, Brian Epstein is going around London without any luck. Instead of showing reel to reel tapes, an engineer told him to put the tapes on disc. After the engineer heard the tapes he suggested Brian go to EMI Records. He said he did and they told him NO. No, the engineer suggested. ," Go to the back where the Parlaphone Studios are and look for the one in charge. He might like this nutty thing you call The Beatles." "what is his name?" Brian asked. "he is a bit of a trouble maker. The company put him in charge of their little known studio, so he can leave them alone. His name is George Martin" the engineer replied. THE REST IS HISTORY.

A lot of this is before the Beatles meet Dylan in August 1964 and started smoking pot alot. The hard days night album was recorded between January and June 1964.

Why do you highlight "And I Love Her" which is NOT the feature of this composite footage & audio but only one tiny section where in fact, most of the tunes featured are the new Hard Day's Night tunes, mostly by John like "If I Fell", "I'll Be Back", "I Should Have Known Better", "Tell Me Why" and others but your main title indicates it's all about "And I Love Her"....why? Why is Paul featured when John wholly dominated the "Hard Days Night" recording sessions (Paul only had THREE tracks on the British LP) and the movie itself? Only she shadow knows right?:-)
