You always hear about how George wasn't a very good writer at the beginning. Well hey, you could have fooled me. When I first heard this in "Meet The Beatles" it hung in there with "She Loves You," "I Saw Her Standing There," and "I Want To Hold Your Hand." The songs dark character stood out and it holds up for me even today.

George was an outstanding musician, both lyrically as well as musically. I love all of Harrison's songs, and some of them are true masterpieces. It's such a shame that he was given a limited quota and allocation of songs for inclusion on Beatles albums - he was an equal partner in the Band and in the same league as Lennon and McCartney in my opinion.

This is the first beatle song to only have one person singing with 0 harmonies. I think thats cool, George always seemed more independent in his songwriting compared to the duo of Lennon and Mccartney and that represents this. @@williamfox8795 ‘Love Me Do’ was the first single released in the UK. It was released on 5th October 1962 and charted at number 17. It was actually written by McCartney several years before. Lennon only contributed the middle 8. It wasn’t released in the USA until 27th April 1964 but it was a single. You have to remember that The Beatles were a British band and were subsequently presented to the USA at a different time and in a different way to the UK. Marketing was King in the US so decisions made there were often very different to those made in the UK.

This song deserves a lot more credit than it gets. Perhaps George’s first effort not as well written as some previous Lennon/McCartney songs. It was still better than many, and several historians have pointed out it was the first Beatles song to have Dylan-esque auto-biographical lyrics, something that defined Lennon later in his writing.

Shelley ... regretfully they wouldn't let him . There's actually a documentary here called George Harrison : All Things Pass ( not to be confused with All Things Must Pass ) . In it George Martin talks about why he usually only gave George one per album and George Martin not only look sheepish but you can tell he was prejudiced against George by what he says .

@@gardensofthegods I've found the same thing from listening to Martin's comments from the past. In later years, Martin has been much nicer to Harrison even saying that he probably should have spent more time working with him. But closer to the Beatles' years, Martin gave away how he felt. At one point, after praising Lennon and McCartney endlessly, he said that he tolerated George Harrison. Martin can be overheard in the Get Back Jan '69 recordings, telling someone that Lennon/McCartney is their songwriting team while Harrison is his own thing. Martin has always talked about how he loved John and Paul's singing but Harrison not so much. It was decided, with Martin being a big part of it, that the Beatles were going to be Lennon/McCartney and Harrison would not get much of a chance. Unfortunate because I've never heard a Harrison Beatles song I didn't like while there are a few Lennon/McCartney songs that didn't need to be there. And Harrison can certainly sing and brings another sound to the band. And we know how many great Harrison songs he had after they broke up when he started putting them out on his own albums. They were great as they were, but they would have been better if Harrison wasn't pushed aside as much as he was.

The poetic way he wrote the lyrics. How he rhymes 2 word and then a 3rd word and then the next line he rhymes 2 words again and then rhymes the end wit the ending of the first line is genius.. “ “ Since she’s been Gone I want no One To talk to Me It’s not the Same but I’m to Blame It’s plain to See “ and the way he uses alliteration Want no One… But I’m to Blame … and it’s all through the song .. what an epic song .. ❤️

I agree and I’d like to say that this is the first hard rock tune not helter skelter! The tone of tune is darker, and it’s much heavier than anything else they’ve done to this point. This isn’t the final version either. The tremolo in the guitar is killer.

I do believe the song was written in A major. The minors you're hearing are the chords B minor C# minor and F# minor which are the 2nd 3rd and 6th of A major. Note too: I Need You was also written in A major.

I’m 75 years old and was there when this song was released. For some reason, it popped into my head probably have not heard it in decades. George in the early days of the Beatles, was discounted, but I’ve always loved his kind of dark tunes. I think this is what you call minor pentatonic. Unsurprisingly he was attracted to eastern music, which seems to be characterized with a lot of this feeling and sound. Listening to these text is the first time I’ve heard the song sort of deconstructed. George’s voice was far better than I appreciated at the time or even after the release of his solo work later in life. As for Ringo, yes have come to appreciate him as one of the Giants. Powerful combinations of talent, energy and unity are rarely found and that’s why the Beatles will stand the test of time. Paul was happy tunes, Jon was bitterness, George was philosophy, and Ringo drove the whole thing

Great line, delivered while singing lead and nice gtr solo for George to boot. Having said that, it WOULD be interesting to hear a good mix of Ringo's drum and Paul's bass parts alone or with the gtr and lead vocal parts reduced back a bit. It IS a good rhythm track and though, I think Ringo is primarily responsible here, Paul must also have been doing something right!

This song and I Wanna Be Your Man are two of the harder rocking songs with some monster drumming grooves and some rather sinister and cool tremolo guitar lines. The Beatles were in their element here and I think possibly reminiscent of the musical direction they were headed to before Brian Epstein became their manager. Just my opinion.

The cut they used on the record employed a tape echo and delay on Harrison’s voice the same as they used on John Lennon. It made the vocals more lively and the sustain on his notes was noticeably better.

not really his first effort, their first recorded song was 'In spite of all the danger' co-written by george and paul. First song put on a record was 'cry for a shadow' written by george and john. It was only at Abbey road that george was put in the background - probably just because as John Lennon said 'George's singing was not the best' . - As is witnessed here in this tape. If George could have only sung better at the start of their career at abbey rd, but the fact is he didn't.

Martin didn't want to bother with Harrison, Martin stated that he tolerated him, he wanted the Beatles to be Lennon/McCartney. Business-wise it makes enough sense, it just that we lost out some as overall the Beatles would have had better output if they didn't push Harrison aside so much. It's ironic this song is called Don't Bother Me as that is Martin's feeling towards Harrison.

When we'd listen to "With the Beatles" as kids, I could always tell that there was something different about this song. That was way before we knew that Lennon & McCartney were the principal songwriters and vocalists. This song had its own special, spooky vibe. George inspired me to start playing guitar. When George Harrison was with the Beatles on V Jay records. It reminds me of a heartbreaking 💔 experience I was only 8 years when this song came out. Now at 67 I remember not to make the same chance twice in making relationships. Very good tune. I had to learn from experience

I always loved this track. Great to hear the early takes on it. He's pushing the top end of his vocal range a bit on "I know she'll always be ..."! Just surprised that there is no other song from him on an album until Help! in 1965.

When I first heard this in 1964 I immediately noticed it was great in a different way than the other songs on the LP. I was only 10 years old so I didn't know a lot about them yet. I always loved this song.

I find several cool things to like about this song and arrangement. One, the use of the amplifier's tremolo effect on the 2nd guitar part. It was rare for them to use that effect so early in their recording career, and it adds some nice dimension to counter the thunk-y rhythm guitar. Another is how McCartney's bass line and the guitar bass note parts harmonize Harrison's vocal melody for the first part of the bridge. They use it for the intro as well. When the vocal line is transformed into those bass & guitar parts, it brings the minor-chord sound out and makes it really kind of spaghetti western-ish, or Roy Orbinson-ish. I think the tremolo guitar chords help with that too. The other thing I like is the infectious way Harrison's main rhythm guitar part chugs along. It's sort of a dopey part, straining to almost form a riff aka Lennon's I feel Fine chord-based, hooky riff. But somehow, it becomes the groove center of the tune. I also think Ringo's chill Calypso beat, and his pounding rock and roll crescendo on the snare & floor tom going into the bridge bring all the early 60's Beatles club band vitality into play. Ringo makes this tune danceable. This tune and arrangement kind of prove the notion that the Beatles were so good as a group that even a fledgling effort at writing by Harrision comes together pretty well and is remembered along with the rest of the early stuff for how it coaxed a listener to sing, harmonize or whistle along. The melody is very limited in range, doesn't include any dramatic intervallic leaps and George sings it very straight. It lends the song a sort of trapped, claustrophobic vibe, which is helped along by the absence of any harmony or background vocals. The fact that the melody kind of goes nowhere is kind of hypnotic and it's simple, forlorn power sneaks up on you over time. There are no "yeah yeah yeah's" or head-shaking, "oooh's". It stands as a great spare, minor key, Orbison-influenced Harrison classic. I would love to hear some modern band cover it and capitalize on the high lonesome, western guitar riffy aspect and maybe showcase or develop that chunky, almost-a-riff rhythm guitar part. I bet it would sound great in 3/4 time as well.

Graham Gouldman too lent a careful ear to this when writing For your love. I wouldn't say he ripped DBM note for note like another commenter here thinks but first verse is very close

I agree melody is similar but the repeated ascending chord progression on FYL is so definitive that I have a hard time hearing the melody in context, particularly with the unison "For your love" background vocals, as a cop of Harrison's melody. Perhaps indirectly or unintentionally, and of course George and the Beatles always acknowledged their influences and who they were trying to sound like. Very interesting - I had never noticed the melodic similarity.

@@mariuspoppFM I love XTC. I didn't catch on until was in my 20's when Oranges & Lemons and Skylarking were released, then went back and listened to all of it. Great band. I love everything about both of those albums. Just peak genius. Wish I'd had the chance to see them live.
