Paul McCartney wanted to make a film about The Beatles and their music after the success of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Several "normal" people would ride a bus on indeterminate "magical" adventures, similar to Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters. That is, Paul had to record, produce, write, direct, and edit the project on his own. This is supposed to be a documentary type thing. How can anyone who really researched anything or had any experience with the soundtrack or this film refer to that song as "Your Mother Should Now"? That is inexcusable. If Paul really was dead he would be rolling in his grave.

With so many great albums starting from "Please, Please Me" to "Abbey Road" I don't even know how it would be possible to pick a "best" from such a selection of great performances and masterpieces. But the Magical Mystery Tour album is certainly right up there regardless of any criticism of the movie which could have possibly not been as bad if it was first shown in color and not black and white. It was a psychedelic experience kind of project and you can see by all the colors utilized how critical that was.

All their videos are the same. They just read other people's words but don't understand the context, idioms. nuance or even pronunciation of people's and place's names. They also inexplicably get basic things like song titles and dates wrong. It's like they just randomly pulled some pages out of a couple of books and didn't even read them before recording a single haphazard, mistake-riddled take and saying 'that'll do'. Just listen from 9:04 - it's like he isn't even listening to his own words, just reciting someone else's which were clearly not written to be spoken. The inflection is so unnatural it might even be a robot voice.

Living in Canada, we never saw the film but enjoyed the album. Many songs became classic Beatles material. " Fool on the Hill, " " I am the Walrus, " " Penny Lane, " and " Strawberry Fields Forever, " ( Released as a double A side single,) " Hello, Goodbye, " and " All you need is Love. " I think Paul bit off more than he could chew with MMT but it's a good document of the times they lived in.

Imagine if Yellow Submarine was released in black and white? The colors were so critical to the visual experience. Granted I really wish the Beatles themselves had done the voice overs the movie itself would have been a completely different experience if not for color.

I recall an interview with one of the Beatles stating that a major part of the reason the film was initially considered a flop was because they released it in black and white. Remember this was 53 years ago and the color was a major factor for the psychedelic experience the film was going for. It certainly was not going to be a big hit from the story line or confusion/sloppiness. Paul was a musician/songwriter, not a film maker but he was artistic and in tune enough to understand how critical color was at that time.

It wasn't "released" in black & white; it was first shown on TV in Britain that way. Even when it was broadcast in color, however, most people couldn't see it that way since very few owned color TVs yet in the UK. The "Flying" sequence was particularly irrelevant in b&w since it consisted of aerial shots of mountains and landscapes in vibrant, unrealistic colors and patterns. Without color, it looked stupid.

Not mentioned in this sloppy video is that "Magical Mystery Tour" was scheduled to be shown by NBC in America a few days after its debut in the UK, but it was so criticized so heavily that this broadcast was cancelled. I was very disappointed since I'd received the album for Christmas and therefore really wanted to see the movie. I finally did in the 1980s when it was broadcast a number of times on "Night Flight", late on Saturday nights.

You had to take anything John said with a grain of salt.. or 40 lbs of salt. He was the type of person that was impossible to please and very jealous, insecure and critical. Heck he was probably his own worst critic. He had no problem criticizing the Beatles music, projects or other members.. but if anyone else did he would be the first to defend against any criticism even in the most ugliest ways. I just hope he went to his grave finally knowing how much enjoyment and maybe even hope he gave to others.

Magical mistery tour is not a movie to consider as a movie by people keen in movies. It's something which has become great with the time because it belongs to the" all too mutch" era. It's a whole surrealistic object which reflects both british tradition of non sense, fairy tales and fantasy and pop or psychedelia culture. For me it's not a failure but one of the too rare tracks of a real good time for manking. And it's why the Beatles will be eternal in our hearts.

I had the opportunity to see both Cans/Reels in their original form, it was unrestored, in the early 70's. You could clearly see how badly damaged this Video Film was. Also it is the only privately owned copy. Given supposedly to a Nightclub Owner by Paul himself. I would love to see a fully restored version in its full format. The audio of the version I watched was actually good quality. As I was leaving on my motorcycle I saw a group of people crowded around two people, later I was told that it was Linda and Paul. Only around 20 to at most 30 people were there, advertised for only one night on a radio station. Proof? Next afternoon, Paul and Linda were filmed by a news crew getting a haircut. It is a boring story. Anyway of all those Rock and Roll Memorabilia things, I have left two things a Beatles for Sale lunch box and a Linda Eastman photo of the Velvet Underground. Both go to a Collector in June.

The VHS video was available in unrestored quality in the 1990's. The last time I saw it, it had been digitally restored and had lost some of it's home movie charm.

And even though it was of bad quality, I consider The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour far better than Let It Be, which appeared to be a Legal Evidence Film for litigation and settlement purposes. Read, Get Back, The Let It Be Fiasco, if you haven't already. I would like to see a video presentation on that. Or a video on John's keen interests in the Occult Sciences and some of the objects He purchased. Keep Up The Good Work.

They say this movie initially got a bad rap not so much due to the content or Paul not being the best film maker, but that they showed it in black and white. The color was one of the few things that could have saved it from being such an initial flop. Remember this was released 53 years ago. The color was critical for the psychedelic whacky experience the film was more or less going for.

Death Cab For Cutie was very much in the movie. He's probably listing out the music that appeared in the movie, but mislabeled it as "the album." He has plenty of mistakes like this in the clip.

I love anything the Beatles did. Even though this film was kind of clumsy we got great music out of it and now it is historical considering the bands popularity still growing 1/2 a century after their break up. My only disappointment from them ever was that they didn't do the voice overs in Yellow Submarine or the Beatles animated cartoon series. Never understood why as they could have easily done them and a lot better of course because it was them being portrayed.

They were extremely busy with The White Album and a lot of other things when "Submarine" was made. Also highly suspicious that the film would just be too cute or "Disney-fied" They warmed up to it afterwards tho The American cartoon series was at the height of Beatlemania so I'm sure it would've nearly impossible for them Voice-overs can be pretty time consuming I'm guessing

The Beatles should have included a bus tour across Stonehenge. That would have added mystery as it needed suspense. They should have made it more abstract by then everyone falling asleep and the bus mysteriously winding up by blackpool lights in a cave.

This is possibly the worst Beatles-related KZbin video I've ever seen. "Ken Kensey?"... "Your Mother Should Now??"... "The Old Fool On the Hill???" How do obvious mistakes like this make it into the final product? To say nothing of the confusing and repetitive narrative (we're told of Brian Epstein's death at least 3 times to name one of many examples) and awkward segues (really not segues at all, more like whoever put the video together was working from a bullet list or old PowerPoint presentation). Magical Mystery Tour (the film) may have been similarly disjointed, but it deserves better than this lazy, thrown-together pseudo-documentary! Thumbs way down.

the only thing that would classify this film as a "cult" classic is that its so bad. its a bloody horrible movie. the only thing that redeems it are the musical sequences which are ALL top notch! the album "magical mystery tour" wasn't officially released in the u. k. until about 1976. it was only a double EP until then. i have a copy of that EP. it includes the booklet and everything, except in miniature, on a 45, single, scale.

You can't easily get away with slop as most hard core Beatles fans will pick up on it in a NY minute. There may be more things to learn about the Beatles we don't all know yet, but not this way.
