They take a simple song, dress it up with a perfect backing track and harmony backing vocals, then add a ridiculously perfect lead vocal and...well, Rubber Soul is full of them. Hits.

@@cuchulainx3125nope they don't write them. God just gifts the tunes to them in a vision lol.

The melodic line in the chord structure running through the entire song makes this song feel hypnotic. No big jarring jumps to break your attention, it just smoothly climbs up and down the scale.

When Paul and John were teenagers and would go to basement parties, Paul would strum his guitar in the corner, wearing a black turtle neck trying to act French to "Pick up birds". 7-8 years later, John asked Paul if he could make those French scribblings into a song. So Paul did. Sont les mont qui von tres bien ensemble" mean I think we would fit together well.

Another great reaction, Phil. There are loads of wonderful songs on this album, which, by the way, had more tracks in the UK version than the US. But here stateside, at least, this is the song that just leapt out at people. Perhaps because, as you say, it is just so simple and yet extraordinarily beautiful. Not unlike "Yesterday." Paul just brought a magical touch to so many of their love songs, and this one is a prime example.
