One of my favorites of the Beatles is Martha My Dear off the White Album, i think its one of Pauls most brilliant songs, it starts out as a little baroque piano parlor song then enters in a traditional northern england marching horn band and then swings into a mid 60's motown song all the while Paul's singing about his Sheepdog named Martha. Who the heck else ever did that other than the Beatles. And it hooks you to the gills and doesnt let go.

Nice one! 'Walrus' is one of my favorites. I once read that, after Lennon introduced the song to George Martin on acoustic guitar, Martin croaked: "John...what the HELL am I supposed to do with that?" And Lennon breezily said: "Ah, you'll think of something!" and left the room. So Martin basically said "Fuck it" and threw everything he thought might fit into the song and it worked. Fifth Beatle, indeed!

Yeah, I read that George Martín and Geoff Emerick were like looking at each other and were speechless and really didnt know what to make of this song that John came up with, they Really had to literally get into John's mind to get an idea of what he was trying to do and what he wanted.

Hi Matt. I do have favorites of course, and almost all of the Beatles songs still sound fresh and continue to appeal to me. They just had an intuitive genius-level talent in songcraft. It's kind of a miracle they actually happened and did what they did. Cheers!

"All My Loving" is Paul's first compositional masterpiece (melody and structure), and the arrangement and playing is flawless (John's guitar triplets, George's rockabilly solo, the harmonies....), so glad you highlighted it Matt! - Great video as usual, all the best, Terry, Australia!

A while back, I was sitting with a friend and we were trying to decide which Beatles songs stood out above the others. As we were listening, I eventually started laughing because it seemed almost impossible that so many of their songs were so great. Almost every song stood out as being among their best. I do get a particular thrill whenever I listen to, "I'll Be Back" from A Hard Day's Night, I love the interplay of the acoustic guitars. As a guitarist, I find that there's nothing ordinary or boring about that rhythm, the strumming is so joyful, they must have had a great time recording that song.

Hey Matt, my experience of I Am the Walrus sounds pretty similar to yours. I remember my uncle had lent me some of his 45s to listen to during one summer and I knew Hello, Goodbye already, but when I flipped it over, man, that song just blew me away. The arrangement, the musical invention, just incredible. I had to play it a few more times, & then replayed it in my head for the rest of the day. A great experience.

It was such a big deal for the whole family to sit watching the live broadcast of 'All you need is love' (in black and white!). I agree with many on your list Matt - The End is forever listenable. My other 9: Norwegian Wood, I Am the Walrus, In My Life, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, I Should Have Known Better, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, Rain, She Said, She Said, and of course Tomorrow Never Knows. 'The Long One' is a 16-minute early take of side 2 of Abbey Road - simply spine-tinglingly wonderful.

On the subject of "All You Need Is Love," Hunter Davies asked John Lennon about the song title and John explained that the title could be taken in two ways. At one level "All You Need Is Love" could mean that love is the most important thing in the world, but it could also mean that love is the one thing you're lacking and haven't got.

Matt, I was there for the release of "Love Me Do." It stunned all of us kids. The DJs played it continuously. What? and harmonica too?! The harmonica part was debated for years, I believe, as it had notes unavailable on a diatonic harmonica, at least to one with John's skills. The unearthing of notes of a call between John and Brian Jones (who basically called to ask, "How the hell did you do that?) revealed that John used a slide chromatic harp, Or so I've read. And what you said about "All My Lovin'," YES, an amazing song that would have sold as a single. I recall that it was the first song called in my late, lamented pre-COVID ukulele club; I'm not sure why. I'm sure these favorites were hard to choose.

Hey Matt, you are absolutely correct regarding the hit potential of "All My Loving" as a USA single. Capitol of Canada released "All My Loving" w/ "This Boy" as a single which rocketed to #1 replacing "I Want To Hold Your Hand" at the top. I imagine the availability of this Canadian release was limited in most US markets, yet it still reached #45 on the Billboard Hot 100. Growing up in Canada, this is still the record that gives me Beatlemania goosebumps. When I hear the 🎶Close your eyes...🎶 intro, I am transported back to 1964. I am pleased you included this on your Next 10 Best.

Hi Matt! Let's be honest, picking "great" Beatles songs is like trying to say which Corvette looks most cool. There are no "wrong" answers. Well, maybe not, say "Revolution #9" or "What Goes On"....but (to borrow a lyric) you know what I mean. Lennon: "All My Loving is Paul, I regret to say, because it's a damn good track, but I play a mean guitar in the back." (might not be verbatim) As for "I Am the Walrus".....I've always thought it was a better PRODUCTION than a SONG.....but I may be a minority on that. The John-Paul-George vocal magic on "Nowhere Man" can still give a contact high. Yes, "Love Me Do" is very important......but it unfairly suffers because of what would come over the next seven years. Great video once again!
@popgoesthe60s52

There are several "wrong answers" actually - you're right. What I find puzzling is how difficult it is for fans to even conceive of applying criteria - instead of just "picking their faves". Maybe that's why I waited 4 years to do a sequel!

I think that after the mess that was to become Let It Be, when George Martin felt he just didn't want to do that anymore, and Paul asked if he'd produce one more album "like they used to", GM put his foot down with something like "I will if you'll let me. I don't care what's going on with you outside the studio, but inside of it, you leave all the non musical stuff behind and concentrate on doing what I know you can." That's why Abbey Road is so much of a wonderful record. All of them, including GM knew - or at least suspected - that it was going to be their last and, hard as I'm sure it was for them to sit there facing each other, knowing what crap they were going through outside, they saw the sessions as a sort of shield from it all. I wish so much that they had made an "Abbey Road film" rather than a "Let it Be" one.

Ok, I have to bite with my own top 10, in order of UK release, with all 4 doing vocals: 1. She Loves You- has the confidence to open with chorus, a catchphrase for a generation 2. A Hard Day's Night- legendary opening chord, immense energy 3. Help- complex emotions delivered in a catchy pop track 4. Yesterday- showed that they had appeal to every musical taste 5. We Can Work It Out- great teamwork as songwriters, and clever changes in timing 6. Strawberry Fields Forever- stunning imagery with contrasting musical colouring 7. With A Little Help From My Friends- uplifting and funny, twice a UK #1 for other artists 8. Hey Jude- inspirational anthem, still played at sports events around the globe 9. Here Comes The Sun- complex and yet sounding simple, hypnotic feel 10. Let It Be- soulful and calming, a fitting end to a stunning catalogue.

I usually put Strawberry Fields as it for me and it's hard to say why..it's just magic! If I had to list 10 that would change from week to week. There are simply too many great ones! I disagree with you on "See My Friends" which I think is the first pop song tinged with Indian sounds. Damn. Every single one of these songs is great. I'm glad you spoke about context in regards Love Me Do. I recall hearing this song as a little boy and noting to myself how it sounded different than the current pop music. The End was nicely covered by Rick Beato. Also, James and I once did a breakdown of it. We covered some of the things that Rick missed talking about. One thing is the remarkable playing with time and meter that happens when Paul sings "the love you take is equal to the love you make." I won't go into it now but normally time signature changes are quite noticeable. In this case, just as in the half-step modulation that happens on the intro of "If I Fell," the result is subtle and seamless--to the point where someone who doesn't understand the music theory wouldn't notice it happening. I believe one of the great earmarks of Beatles music--alongside their incredible musical imagination--is subtlety .

Some good choices there Matt. Of course, the use of the word "best" is risky when talking about the highly subjective experience of music. But I appreciate that you are trying to apply "objective" criteria. Lyrically, Nowhere Man is a huge step forward into introspection for Lennon. Dylan`s influence at this time cannot be overstated. Because I was around when Love Me Do hit the airwaves, I can tell you that it sounded fresh, and joyful, and alive in a way that I had not heard, "Joyful exuberance" would be the term. And the harmonica was incredibly attractive, a real hook! Let`s be forever grateful to Delbert McClinton - who was touring the UK with Bruce Channel in `63 - for giving John Lennon some pointers on harmonica playing. And let``s be grateful that John paid attention!

My favorite songs that have to be tomorrow never knows from the Beatles strawberry fields forever and revolution nine tomorrow never knows and revolution nine are great because they’re using tape loops and I love the basic track that was used which is revolution take 20 the unreleased track I wish that track would’ve been released on the white album super deluxe box set. and also I think there is an unreleased I’ll take a Revolution nine which is seven minutes longer instead of a piano there is an Oregon used and I love how the voice on revolution nine girls left to right I need to channel and I also love a day in the life as one of the greatest songs ever. I think tomorrow never knows still stands out as one of their best and I think it’s still revolutionary to this day.

I guess Tomorrow Never Knows might be experimental but it didn't get covered much. It doesn't have a universal theme that everyone can relate to. In the later years Lennon could get away with experimental tracks like this and "Rain" and "Walrus" and Revolution 9, or I Dig A Pony, only because they were anchored by actual selling hits by McCartney like Paperback Writer, Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby, Hello Goodbye, Let It Be, Get Back. In a lot of ways Lennon rode McCartney's coattails which allowed him the freedom to be experimental. I still love Lennon's work tho, and prefer his solo work to McCartney's. It's a yin/yang sort of thing.

Here's a concise list of Matt's initial 15 best Beatles' songs, and his next 10 best Beatles' songs: Best 15 Beatles (4 years ago): A Day in the Life Something Yesterday In My Life I Want to Hold Your Hand Hey Jude Penny Lane Strawberry Field Forever She Loves You Here Comes the Sun Let It Be Come Together A Hard Day' s Night We Can Work it Out Day Tripper Next Best 10 Beatles: 1. Tomorrow Never Knows 2. I Saw Her Standing There 3. Eleanor Rigby 4. My Guitar Gently Weeps 5. All You Need is Love 6. Norwegian Wood 7. All My Loving 8. I Am the Walrus 9. Love Me Do 10. The End Matt, I agree with most of your choices. However, regarding the "next 10" list, personally, I've never been especially fond of "Tomorrow Never Knows" (too repetitious) or "Love Me Do" (a good early effort, but not one of the Beatles' best). I'd probably have substituted "Here, There and Everywhere" (perhaps the Beatles prettiest song), or maybe "Paperback Writer".

Obviously there are many Beatles related podcasts out there, but when it comes to rankings and personal preferences of the podcast creators, I so rarely agree with their choices. Luckily, I agreed with every single selection here. As always, great stuff and an enjoyable watch. P.S. I completely understand the resistance to ‘Tomorrow Never Knows,’ in that when I first heard it as a kid, I thought it was some atonal chunk of nothingness. It’s now possibly my favourite song by The Beatles.

Yes, "Love Me Do" has become such a non-threatening part of the cultural wallpaper that only after recently watching another KZbinr "react" to it did I think, "You know what's weird? This is basically ... a blues song. The first Beatles song is a blues song. It doesn't really sound like a 'Merseybeat' song, or the other songs from their stage act around this time. It's like a blues song with harmony singing. This must have been pretty weird when it came out, right?" As Mick Jagger said, "And then we heard there was a group from LIVERPOOL. Now -- everyone talks about, you know, Syosset and Levittown, but I can tell you Liverpool, this is really -- Anyway, this group...they had long hair, scruffy clothes, but they had a record contract, and they had a record in the charts with a bluesy harmonica on it called 'Love Me Do.' When I heard the combination of all these things, I was almost sick." Although, with apologies to Ringo, I prefer the version with the tambourine.

I like all the selections. But is "Ticket to Ride" proto-heavy metal? I hear an R 'n B influence, particularly in the middle eight. I am reminded (oddly) of Don Covey. Is "Love Me Do" unlike anything before it? I seem to remember hearing John say he took the harmonica part from Bruce Chanel's "Hey Baby."

I had to make a KZbin playlist of the 27 songs you selected, Matt! But I figured an old Beatles LP had 14 songs and 27 songs is one song shy of a double LP. So I added one more and made it #26 so the bookends still finish the list. My addition is the song John thought was the best song on Revolver: Here, There, & Everywhere. These are the most recent mixes I could find with video if the most recent mix has a video. kzbin.info/aero/PLTkHJ3DxFNY0z6mnGXpY5-s0qlXaNvKP7&si=3r7RIehrXjNo0KgJ

wow.... surprised that All My Loving and Ticket to Ride were picked over Help and Revolution. if you're talking about an early model for heavy metal, I think Revolution is way more appropriate than Ticket to Ride. and All My Loving...I still, to this day, don't get why it's a big deal Beatles number other than it's the most stand out track on With the Beatles LP.... and what about Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds Back in the U.S.S.R. With a Little Help from My Friends Rain Happiness Is a Warm Gun ...I think they break grounds, very popular with the fans and very influential than those two songs. oh, well.... looking forward to your next Beatles' Top 10 list. 😊 *Oops! And I Love Her - McCartney-Harrison co-author one of the greatest-ever, love songs…a foreshadowing effort, for both Yesterday - McCartney emerges as the musically-transcendent genius and one-man band of The Beatles Help! - Lennon’s proof that self-awareness can make great pop Drive My Car - Beatlemania ends with mature, double entendre and a heavy sound that’s sometimes, charming and...dirty In My Life - Collaboration proves competition, when both Lennon and McCartney claim authorship of this truly, timeless, masterpiece Tomorrow Never Knows - “Wow! The Beatles made this?!” Strawberry Fields Forever - John’s interior monologue + “Wow! The Beatles made this?!” I Am The Walrus - John Lennon becomes the Father of Rap, setting its finest example Revolution - Lennon answers the call subtly - yet - boldly, titles his message, endorsed by Paul, George and Ringo. The Beatles prove their revolution is in music, but not in the streets Let It Be - One of the greatest-ever ballads. McCartney’s loving tribute to his late mother, still stirs the soul
