He did, and the feeling was mutual. Much to the band's amusement, Ed referred to them often as "youngsters," but they never forgot how Ed treated them during their first exposure to American audiences: with kindness, professionalism, and respect. The Beatles wanted to appear on Ed Sullivan more times than their schedule allowed, unfortunately. I would be remiss not to mention that Brian Epstein's genius served The Beatles well yet again; it was his idea to debut the Beatles on the popular CBS Sunday night show, and because of that, magic happened.

According to the Paul McCartney and the late Joan Rivers, Ed Sullivan began showing signs of Alzheimer's by the late 1960s. By the time his show was cancelled in 1971, it was quite noticeable. The producers resorted to using a lot of pre-recorded segments after a couple of incidents where live acts finished their performances and when the camera cut to Ed, he would just he standing there like a deer caught in headlights. After the show went off the air, he deteriorated rapidly. Paul McCartney saw Ed at a party and went up to him to say hello. Ed looked at him as if he didn't know him, shook McCartney's hand and said, "Pleased to meet you". Of course, just a few years before, Ed knew all of the Beatles names and could easily identify each one of them. Ed died of esophageal cancer in 1974 at the age of 73. He always seemed so much older.

Technically he’s right. The Beatles did first appear in the US on the 22 of November 1963 in an early morning newscast. However The Beatles very first appearance in the world has to be 1962. With the release of their very first record “Love Me Do” , crowds were already lining up to see them.

John said that he felt so phoney, he certainly hid it well. He said he and the other three guys bought into the Beatles myth.....they were a group with talent and ability but not amazing musicianship.....Paul was probably the most competent all round musician, the others were very average....but it was the combination of the four personalities that made a unique whole. It takes a perfect positive storm for all the elements to fall into place for such a phenomenon.....it will happen again, but I reckon it must be about a one in every 300 to 400 years that you get something so impactful on music, youth culture and society in the way the Beatles did. Who thinks we will never see the like of them again?

Ed Sullivan didn't like The Doors too much. The doors were informed to change the lyrics on Light My fire. The sensors thought "you know we couldn't get much higher" should be changed. Jim sang it just like it was written. One of Ed Sullivan's people went backstage and started screaming at The Doors saying, "you'll never play on the Ed Sullivan show again!" Jim responded by saying, "we have done Ed Sullivan, no need to come back here again!" Jim Morrison was priceless!! In retrospect this may not be exactly what was said, but it's close. The Doors were bad boys, The Beatles were Lilly White Angels to Ed.

How strange that the American perception of the BEATLES, is at Odds with their recent history , living in Hamberg, and therir experiences there. 'very nice lads in deed'

I remember when the Beatles came out and ‘ Beatlemania ‘ it was all about the hair and everyone was wearing ridiculous wigs like the one Ed had on with Topo Gigio. Those things were really bad. Everywhere on tv people were putting on stupid wigs like that and trying to strum a guitar and sing yeah yeah yeah. Every show there was had something pertaining to the Beatles on it.

Thank goodness that Mr Ed gave the Beatles their big break here in the states because without his endorsement they would have just another 'one hit wonder' and gone back to England to work menial jobs like driving cabs, cutting hair, masseuses, waiters etc; They ow that man everything

@Soft Melly. I thought that was the studio audience girls screaming while watching the commercial. If so, this is the only time I've seen a commercial shown, where the audience could see it on a studio monitor, and be heard reacting to it... Strange but different. 😉

Ed Sullivan was a regular comedian when he wanted to be. Which sometimes was a lot more than people think. He did more stuff in 50s , by 1960s he was slowing down. There is old What’s My Line show or one of those where he comes on as mystery guest wearing this really retarded mask and gives himself away by laughing too much. They recognized his laugh. What was really funny was watching him imitate himself. Or imitate other people imitating him.
