This topic is a glorious rabbit hole. Thanks Andrew. I’m in the process of securing a 1st NZ pressing of A Hard Day’s Night - there are multiple printing errors but the main one is on the spine - A Hard Night’s Day. Almost hard to believe it made it through however it’s the third one I’ve seen. If you haven’t come across before I’m happy to email an image once I have it in my hands.

LOL 🤣This reminds me of the Hendrix documentary where they'd misspelled Electric Ladyland as "Electric Landlady" on the label. Apparently, Jimi didn't think it was funny though...

I’ve got a copy of this one. On the back they tried to fix a catalog number error by simply printing a black rectangular box to cover the error! It also has the gold mono sticker placed over the stereo PCSM catalog number.

Love this video. I'm always overjoyed to find a misprint lp. One I have is a U.S. copy of Abbey Road that has a side 2 cut apple with no printing whatsoever. When I found it, I bought it on the spot. I've never seen another one like it.

The closest to a Help error I could offer is that my 2014 mono box's Sgt Pepper has the Help label on side two, which was kind of alarming when I unboxed it.

Great video. I always harp on it but it’s always a part of your work I don’t see others point out and it’s worth doing so: your attention to detail when editing (adding the stock footage, looks like you added some foley sound to them as well, clever/humorous/insightful cutaways, and a great format of video which each of your “chapters” being easily defined chunks of the video. This, of course, is the cherry on top to the ice cream sundae of Beatles knowledge you throw our way each week. Your work is not in vein and I hope the channel continues to grow. Keep up the stellar work!

I had a similar experience in 1977 in buying a mono copy of The White Album while visiting London. When I got home (in Florida), I sadly discovered the discs to actually be stereo (which I'd already bought years earlier as an EMI Parlophone import in Pennsylvania). But that was my first time shopping in the UK, with the odd (to me) practice of the cardboard sleeves in the bins being empty, which had be filled by the clerk from behind the counter. So I've always assumed that it was the clerk's error of inserting the wrong discs.

Never had a desire to collect label misprints. It would have expanded the collection exponentially. However, I do have a UK Mono White album where the cover rim reads Mono only (no stereo) and side 4 is in full stereo. Label is Mono, but the deadwax starts with YEX. So I kept that one.

My other half has a bunch of Chilean Beatles and Solo LPs and they all just say "Mono-Stereo Compatible" rather than being specific and some are stereo even with XEX matrix numbers.

Me neither, although I do find them a curiosity especially as one of my other interests is the history of printing methods. It is just one way the haphazard nature of the production chain often was and is gets manifested. Another way is this: I have a copy of the White Album bought in 1988 where Sides 1 and 3 are DMM digitally mastered (with traditional Apple labels) and Sides 2 and 4 are non-DMM (with the new re-typeset Apple labels).

So much new information and a great reference to dip back into. This I guess would be a mispressing rather than misprint, but I have an 80s stereo Yellow submarine lp (sleeve and labels), but pressed with the mono side 1 - presumably a mix up when they were reissuing the mono LPs in the early 80s.

Great in-depth look into these records! I only own two, being the missing hyphen on the Abbey Road label and the misprints on Hey Jude. Just to note, there are 2 different variations of the first pressings of Hey Jude, and both have spelling errors. Of course, there is the 1st pressing that has the “Paper Back” and “Revolutions” errors, but I also have a second variation that has Revolutions corrected to “Revolution,” but still contained the “Paper Back Writer” error. It wasn’t until the 3rd pressing from 1973 was when it was corrected, and the label was now a pale green apple.

Early Italian copies of Please Please Me (issued here simply as "The Beatles") have "There's a PLANCE" on the back cover, whilst the label for the "Hey Jude" album from the same country of issue has "PEPERBACK Writer" amongst the tracks.

On my German pressing of " Revolver," song from George Harrison " I want to tell you," is mispressed " I want to love you." But someone told me they pressed many of those. And have U.K.export of " Abbey Road," with mispressed sides. Side one is on side two,and opposite. Yesterday i listened to my German press and it' was cracking on " Oh,Darling.." 😎 Cheers Young Master Andrew good video. And you go to the Beatles convention in Liverpool,there' s one in August.🇧🇲

Hi Andrew, Another brilliant video. I was lucky enough to be a member of the official fan club in 1970 and was sent a copy of "From Then To You". Although not a misprint my copy has the labels transposed Side 1 label is on Side 2 and vice versa Considering the album was allegedly compiled using Bettina Roses' personal flexi-discs I think it warrants a CD release for completeness.

EMI trademark juxtapositions were amazingly common from the late 60s onwards, and it's clear to me that as far back as 1967 they were wanting to get rid of having so many brands in operation. The main manifestation of this was the introduction of the red and brown EMI label in 1973 but lest anyone forget, EMI had tried to drop individual labels in mid-1967 in favour of just putting EMI on the sleeve front. The labels still appeared on the sleeve rears and the records themselves, but it seems they were trying to phase them out. But at the start of 1968 this policy was reversed. Probably because of the pending launch of Harvest after having a heads up about Philips' plans for Vertigo and Decca already having their Deram label for "prog" artists. Anyway, the cachet that Parlophone and Columbia had was well on the wane and by the end of The Beatles' original catalogue was, I think, already seen as an anachronism by the bright young hopefuls now working for EMI. Parlophone wasn't even going to get a one box EMI label redesign until the Beatles mono reissues in late 69. Columbia and HMV had already received theirs at the start of the year which is why you can find Columbia LPs with a one box label that still state "SOLD IN U.K...." albeit in the rim text. Anyway, from that point on it seems there was a general lack of care; a cassette of Hollies Greatest I have from its original run in 1969 has a Stateside logo instead of Parlophone, and a Shadows Greatest cassette having Parlophone instead of Columbia (and I'm not talking about a latter day Warner reissue where that would actually now be correct). Wings Wild Life, when issued as part of the Fame catalogue in 1985, came with two box EMI Parlophone labels but with a Fame catalogue number, rather than the Fame label design or even the original photo labels the album had at the time of original release.

Fascinating and informative. I purchased Sgt Pepper in Hong Kong in 67. My first Beatle album. First pressing and manufactured in Singapore. The error is the back cover. The images of John,Paul,George and Ringo are in double vision. The lyrics and credits all normal. Still have it. I came across a Revolver with the Apple logo some years back in NZ (a NZ pressing too) A Help Capital label single back in the UK purchased from a Bargain bin. All fine except for the words in brackets (From the fourthcoming film Eight Arms To Hold You) which of course was the original working title for Help. Evidently Capital at the time were too impatient for 100% confirmation. Album cover errors would be another fantastic topic to cover. Really impressed with your depth of knowledge.😎👌

Hey Andrew, Ruben from Argentina here. There's a very rare and unique misprint in my country. Very early pressings of Day Tripper single were translated and labeled as "Equivocación de un día" rather than the later corrected "Vacación de un día". Funny thing is that the word "Equivocación" means "mistake" so it's kind of a confesion. It was out just one week and then retrieved to the label for correction, very hard to find and ultra rare and collectible nowadays. I have one for sale if you are interested. Cheers

I have an artist friend! He loves to work in the style of waxography and also draws portraits of all the members of the Beatles! He just paints portraits in an unusual way, takes a brush and dips it in ordinary water, so you won’t see anything on the canvas because the canvas is dark, but after sketching the water silhouette, he just takes it and sprinkles sand or flour on wet contours! Incredible masterpiece portraits are coming out!

I can’t remember where the switch was, but it was either that the back cover got it wrong or the label on the LP was wrong: A U.S. copy of the RINGO album, which I bought in 1974, shortly after it was released, listed Randy Newman’s “Have You Seen My Baby?” as “Hold On.” That is, the label on the disc differed from what the back cover called it. The mistake made sense, because both the phrase “Hold on” and the phrase “Have You Seen My Baby?” are sung several times in the song. It’s beyond a printer’s error. Someone who knew the words to the song made the mistake.

Another labelling oversight I recall seeing examples of are early Yellow & Black labels that still had the old 33 1/3 indication in the position where it would have been on the Black & Gold label. Something which IIRC occurred on a number of EMI titles around the time of switchover. Off topic again, but somewhere in my collection I have a Black & Gold Parlophone (non-Beatles, I'd have to delve in and check which one) where the text is in silver rather than the gold print used for the template. Also as a vaguely related aside, I have both a 50s style Gold on Brown Parlophone-Odeon title and a late 50s style Cyan and Silver Columbia title where the SOLD IN U.K... text has been printed onto the original label at a later date. You can tell by the differing colours and slight angle and the way the ink shines differently when held up to the light. Another example of how "EMI were a company who didn't like to throw anything away" and that in some cases, excess label stock got used over a period of years, which sheds doubt that an earlier label variation always indicates an earlier pressing. May have been a case of over-ordering in the first place... Something more likely to happen with a Richard Tauber album than a Beatles one!

Extremely interesting - thanks for another informative video. I have an Australian pressing of 'Hey Jude' which bears the 'Paper Back Writer' spacing error, but not the 'Revolutions' error. I was wondering if you or anyone in the comments had any insight on this specific misprint? Thanks in advance!

The 'Paper Back' 'typo' was actually on the original UK Label Copy sheet, which is why so many countries around the world replicated it. 'Revolutions', however, falls squarely on the UK typesetter lol.

I'll need to check your videos if you've already covered Capital Records printing errors. I was born 1953 in Indiana known as the mid-west here in the states. I had a paper route and made extra money delivering newspapers. A lot of that 'extra' money went to buying Rock n Roll records in the 50s and early 60s such as. Elvis, Buddy Holly and some rockabilly songs. This is a small town and I'd have to drive up to Indy and purchase my vinyl there. (It's true, I had to walk uphill 6 miles through the snow, both ways to school') I've purchased multiple copies of all the Beatles LP during the early pressings and I might have a unique one. Thanks for the video!

Would love to see the breakdown of the label variations on the VeeJay "Introducing The Beatles" album pressings. I had bought one in 1976 at a local store here in Toronto, Ontario. But as I was 12 years old the label didn't match the songs on the record and it seemed like a defect to me....so I took it back to the store and traded it for Beatles '65. I now kick myself as I know that it was one of many misprintings/pressings

Not a mispressing per se, but the Japanese mini LP SHM-CD edition of 'Abbey Road' has the misplaced Apple logo on the back of the sleeve. It was done on purpose; in most cases, Japanese mini LPs reproduce even the tiniest details of the first pressing of LPs, with the exception of some information such as 'Made in Japan'. Something similar happened to the mono LPs from 2014: Apple couldn't reproduce the labels 100 % accurately due to copyright issues.
@markboulton954
@markboulton954 Жыл бұрын
There have been recent moves to allow cover reproductions to include the original credits but with a disclaimer on an obi-strip type sash that points out the copyright information has changed since then and current copyright details can be found on the record label. I liked the way Pink Floyd were able to retain the Columbia logo on their re-issues but simply change the text that stated who owned the trademark; i.e. Sony instead of The Gramophone Co. Ltd.

@@markboulton954 Thanks for the info. I've got almost 300 Japanese mini LPs... I wish they'd done that before. I stopped collecting CDs and LPs so I don't have the 2017 Japanese mini LPs. I've got the 2000-2001 collection; everything from 1967 through 1979 minus 'Obscured by Clouds'. I've read that the 2017 mini LPs are better, but I'm disappointed that they're standard CDs instead of SHM-CDs or Platinum SHM-CDs. Still I'd grab all the 1967-1979 ones if I had the money.

If my memory serves me correctly, my copy of “The Beatles Greatest” from Germany has some songs credited Lennon-McCartney and some songs credited McCartney-Lennon on the album cover. I believe the first name credited was the lead singer (and primary writer of the track). Was this ever done elsewhere? I will have to dig into my collection to see if this was also done on the label.

When John Lennon died I was 10 years old. My older brother at that time was watching TV on which there was a report about this event and tells me that John Lennon has died! I asked him who is this? He said that the musician of the Beatles! I did not attach any importance to this since I was very small and had no idea what the Beatles were, and even more so John Lennon! My acquaintance with the Beatles happened quite by accident, my classmate asked me to buy the Beatles album A hard days night in the Melodiya music store, which was released for the first time in our country of the USSR by the Melodiya company, since I live not far from this store, I bought this disc and gave it to a classmate! I began to ask him what kind of group? to which he answered me English group The Beatles and said that its founder was John Lennon! I began to remember that six years ago I had already heard the name John Lennon and remembered the reportage about the death of John Lennon 1980. I immediately decided to go to the Melodiya store and buy myself a vinyl disc A hard days night for familiarization! It happened in 1986! And from that time to the present, I have been a lover and connoisseur of the incredible phenomenon The Beatles. At the moment I have the entire collection and discography of the Beatles. Some of their songs I enjoy singing and performing on the guitar! Thanks to my classmate that in 1986 he asked me to buy him the disc A hard days night from which my fateful acquaintance with this great band took place!

I don't know if different fonts on one of the sides is considered a misprint, but I have a couple. One is a UK mono pressing of Rubber Soul which has Times New Roman on side 1 and Sans Serif on side 2. The other is a UK '88 Yellow Submarine digitally remastered which has the 90's font on side 1 and the earlier 60's-80's font on side 2 (the Apple label uses the layout from 1984 on both sides, with the rimtext reaching the whole circumference). Another curious pressing I have, not a misprint but possibly a mispressing, is a '76 brazilian Help! album (not the soundtrack) which has the James Bond intro on the opening track. This one became highly collectable over here because of that. EDIT: It is also a misprint as the album name on side 2 is missing.

Something I learned quite early on in my working career, was that if you are given things to type or typeset, and the copy you're given is clearly wrong, you mustn't try and correct it, you have to put exactly what is given and wait for the client to spot the mistake so a new job can be submitted. Crazy but true, and I'm sure the various companies EMI used to print their labels were no different. It's strange that I SHOULD HAVE KNOW BETTER has a space where the N should be, as if it WAS typeset but someone thought "I Know Better" and got out his scalpel and chipped off the N block from the stamper thinking he was being clever. The white Apple label in 87 is a strange one because clearly there had been competing instructions being given at the time as to how to brand the digital reissues. Whether to brand Beatles records as Parlophone, Apple, both or neither was a wrangle that had been going on between Apple and EMI since 1970.

Hi Andrew, I have what I now know is a rare first UK pressing of Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band 1967, Mono with the Album Misprint on the cover for the song With a little help from my friends, as A little help from my friends with incorrect lyrics, it’s also in Mint condition PMC 7027 XEX637/638. I’m keen to find out what it could be worth. It was my mothers album, I think never played and she was friends with Ringo Star when young as her best friend dated him. Ironically she was forbidden to date him by her father as he said he is a no hoper musician who will be poor always. Boy did he get it wrong. So this album may have even been given to her by Ringo. I also had the honour of meeting George Harrison at a gig I sang in for the Grand Prix drivers in Adelaide. So there are many reasons why this album is so special. ❤
