The aptly named Abbey Road: The unintended symbolism of the Beatles walking away from the EMI studio and the unintended statement that the boys were now at the "crossroads" is to me what makes this cover so marvelous and prophetic. The blue sky doesn't hurt either.

One big mistake I made about ten years ago was selling a Near Mint first UK pressing mono Revolver . It had a rather large signature in blue sharpie going down the right side vertically. I thought it was the previous owners name , didn't even bother to try ,and read the name . So I sold the album to a private collector at a discounted price thinking the cover had a large inscription written on front of cover . Needless to,say I took pictures of the cover to send to potential collectors I sold to. Mind you this cover,and record ,and labels were near mint , there was only one spindle trail on one side . I sold it for $75.00 USD . It was about two years later I saw Voormams signature , I thought it looked familiar ,it was Klaus signature.

It would be really interesting to delve deeper into the various cover variations for each album, including international versions. For example, that the Italians redesigned the Rubber Soul logo (same style, but slightly different). Or that they made the back side of "Pepper" not red, but washed-out pinkish. Or that the Germans kept the numbering of White Album until they stopped making it locally at Electrola - but the 6-digit version was embossed, not printed. Or that New Zealand got Abbey Road as flipback. :)

I love ,love ,love the Italian first or at least 1960s pressings of Beatles albums. They didn’t screw around with the master tapes from EMI London. They are the best sound quality, I’ve had all the U.K. pressings being the standard to beat, the Italians on Parlophon ( no E ) is the winner. Why you ask. Back in the sixties most Italians didn’t speak English, therefore they pressed in smaller quantities . As the man from Parlogram stated once before, you didn’t know which pressing you were getting from the run of stampers. And which mother was used from a dub. The Italians didn’t scrimp. Their early Parlophon labels are a true aesthetic . There was a date stamped in the Italian pressings, I believe on some it carried the date of the first pressings in Italy, but I’m not certain is they used that date on later pressings. The point being you were more likely than not to get an album which was pressed from a one or two mother,and a stamper that had only pressed 500-1000 copies of any given album. The Italian HELP first pressing cover is a very elaborate gatefold. On first pressings the inside photos took up the entire inside gatefold, later reissues took out half ,hence only one side on inside of gatefold. I had one of those in NM condition both record AND cover. I needed rent during pandemic ,and sold it for $400. BIG MISTAKE. If you’ve read this far,and have money to burn,try out the early Italian albums . They are pricey , the most expensive of any country including the U.K. . Finding EX to NM will cost you big time … Ps. Totally agree on your point of Rubber Soul cover.

There were many bootlegs of this variant... also the US version was never sold as the deluxe box set. Just the UK. Original. The us version was nearly all the red apple label

Hi. The myth of the 'misaligned apple' on Abbey Road. The image on the back is zoomed in, like the front. The position of the apple is unchanged compared to the background, as if it's embedded in the photo of the wall. It's the text that is now misaligned, as the apple is closer to the edge, due to the zoom. Check how the apple remains right under the 'A' in 'Abbey Road'. So the apple wasn't moved back into place afterwards - the zoom of the photo was corrected.

Totally agree. Technically (phototypesetting) there were two films, one of them with the credit text (monochrome) and one of them with the backdrop photography in colour, which were then put one on top of the other. It's the complete backdrop including the apple which shifted in relation to the text (which remained where it was supposed to be). Glad you pointed it out. No misaligned apples to be seen here!

this is 100 percent correct imho, its the image that is the issue, however the term has to be used because everybody knows what misaligned means even though it is technically not true

That makes sense. It seems that some collectors refer to aligned covers as second pressings, but I have also heard that the “misaligned apple” covers were produced at the same time as the aligned ones, possibly by different machines. I am not exactly sure about the entire process of creating the albums but I am sure it was very complex and disorganized. I see a lot of aligned copies with the early black inner sleeve, which is the one I have.

@@suckerzezper Yes it is my belief that the mis-aligneds ( so-called ) were just a error batch produced at the same time as the others. However copies may have hung around at Hayes to be used up as you see them a lot on export pressings, even 1 box EMI exports which were not produced until c Jan 1970

0:50 - Klaus was already at Abbey Road as Manfred Mann's bass guitarist in 66. He sat in on various Beatles Revolver sessions in which he doodle drawed a lot. While Lennon looked at the drawings, he said Klaus should design the next album in that style. The other Beatles agreed. A week or so later Klaus returned with a board with cutouts gled to it in what was the rough look of the Revover cover - George Martin interview 1993, findable on KZbin.

I bought a copy of the mono MMT EP when it was first released. To my utter astonishment (not to say annoyance) when I played side 1 what came out was the Beach Boys single Darlin'. As a big Beatles fan then (and now) I was really disappointed and took it back to the record shop and they exchanged it for a proper copy. I wasn't thinking of rare pressings at that time but now I wish I had kept the Beach Boys one. But then again, I could only afford 1 single from my pocket money at that time and MMT was very expensive for me then. Oh well, as they say.

I love the fact that you mentioned all these different details of all the Beatles album covers from the later years, and when I find very interesting is when I bought the Beatles White album it was enough that Joel’s case and what’s interesting about that CD album covers that it was not embossed It wasn’t until I bought the Beatles studio recordings box that in stereo and the man a box that was then I found out where is the white album was embossed. And even on the Beatles stereo albums on the final one of them was the only one that was embossed which I thought was really cool, and the magical mystery tour album when was released as an album was a capital records album I think it has a 24 page booklet or something like that. All these album covers are so iconic I think that’s why they’re great.

I read somewhere that mono sleeves were later repurposed for stereo discs - is this true? My copy is a stereo top loader but with a number 101782. I managed to find (in the US!) a ridiculously cheap Let it Be box - worn but intact - and without an album. It’s definitely a cool item. Check that off the bucket list! The poster you mentioned I found in an early pressing export copy of Hey Jude. Another great video, keep ‘em coming!!

They were pretty common and in the 80s as I recall, on the US maroon capitol label. They are made from Virgin vinyl though, unfortunately the black vinyl sounds often better because of the dielectric used in the black coloring prevented STATIC, which caused dust to stick like a magnet!!

Awesome video, although one thing that was missed (unless I'm getting something wrong, which is usually the case) is that, on some mono sleeves of the Magical Mystery Tour EP, the line 'All lyrics copyright 1967 for the world by Northern Songs Ltd England' was printed on the inside back of the 2nd EP pocket. I've never, ever seen one in person but they are out there.

I have a copy of the original box set of Let It Be I bought on the first week it was released here in Australia. The Box and accompanying book were printed in England but the album was pressed here in Australia by EMI. Kevin, you are quite right about the fragility of the box and book so much so that my box set rarely sees the light of day. Regarding the White Album my first copy I bought in December 1968 was reasonably low numbered stereo copy but unfortunately it had a fault which I believe affected many early copies over here and that was annoying skip halfway through Birthday.

I had two Fourth proofers on Pepper covers,but mine had the info printed upside down on the upper right-hand area of the inside of the gatefold,even scarcer,I would imagine.

I didn't know the post cards of the first UK edition of the White Album were protected by a paper sheet. I have the mono box sets (European CDs, Japanese CDs -thicker box and extra booklet- and vinyl) as well as the stereo SHM-CD mini LP (first issue, red sticker). The post cards on all those editions are loose with no protection whatsoever except for the album jacket itself. Thanks for the video and the info!

the UK photo card spacer lasts well into the early 70s numbered copies. They were usually discarded as you can imagine & the paper changes too.

I'm in Eastern PA.,near Allentown,where a pressing plant in the '60's on 10th St.there,contracted with a fair amount of labels to do pressings.Ine such company was VJ and of course,Introducing....was pressed there,both Mono and Stereo copies were done there.Ive had both that were pressed there.

Also,there is a '68 variation that I had (out of the 70+ original mono and Stereo copies,I once had)that did NOT list the A Day In The Life track on the label!!Just to make you aware.AlsoI had a Rubber Soul original(yellow/ black) that misspelled "Norwegian" as "Norweigian" on the label,as well.Keep a look out for that one,tooy buddy in North New Jersey collected UK's and other country Parlophones,Odeons and had close to 40 milk bins of mostly Beatles originals.I bought the whole run!!!He had over 70+ copies of Parlophone UK Peppers alone!! Everything was sold off again,by me.Wish I had the 40 bins back,now!!

I bought "A Collection of Beatle Oldies" in the U.S. in the early 1970s because it had "From Me To You", which I had never heard before. (This was pre-Red album). The garish cover confused me, as it looked rather cheap and generic. Until now, I didn't even know it was an official Beatles album.

Also,Abbey Road was the first issued only in Stereo,and also,the first Beatle Lp title after A Hard Day's Night to not note the "Sold in UK"info,in the upper portion of the label.I believe some copies of Yellow Sub did not feature the disclaimer as well.

I first saw Alan Aldridge's pictures in a magazine that came out in USSR in the early 90s, containing the history of the Beatles (and also containing some song lyrics as well as the corresponding Aldridge pictures). Never will forget "Back in the USSR". :D

Andrew on my Abbey Road cover with misaligned Apple, and writing on back cover over song titles it says " off registration " with circle around song titles ,and box around Apple all in someone's hand. I noticed inside cover it has three letters stamped "TPS" unless it's the initials of someone ,but that makes no sense as it was never sold ... I have no idea what that means . When I got this cover it had no record as it was being tossed out I assume . I never should have put a record in it , but I did, now it has faint ringwear but only on front of cover . The colours of the entire front cover are remarkable. The laminate is the glossiest I've ever seen. Needless to say I took the album out long ago .

I'm an American that has been collecting Beatles records since 1979! I had zero knowledge about foreign pressings, so when I found one, I bought it. In later years, I learned that they were all 1970's pressings, but they sounded fantastic compared to the Capitol U.S. releases, and had more songs!

Thank you for this video. When you talked through the 'Let It Be' box set I realised that the new 'Let It Be' book-published 30th August 2021-is taking up where the original 'Let It Be' box set book left off. From memory the new book will cost £30. It will be bigger, more solid, and more comprehensive than the old book was. The book in the 'Let It Be' boxed set is the prototype for the new book. P.s. at 13.16 or so you say the 'soft back book', but you show a hardcover book. Were all the boxed set books hardcover? Also am I to assume that since you showed no 'Let It Be' sleeve covers then there are no variations on it? Or am I wrong?

I don't have the new book, I only show the original which were all softback. The only cover differences are the red/green Apples on the back.

Fascinating, as are most of your videos, especially as I bought these records in the 60s more or less as they came out, althought With The Beatles was my first album. I bought Sgt. Pepper in the summer of 64 and still have it wih the original Fool inner sleeve and cut out sheet, but my copy had a cover with the German Odeon label logo on it. I always assumed this was because they struggled to supply enough covers in that summer. Do you know anything about this? The record is a standard British made pressing - XEX 637-1 / XEX 638-1. Thanks!

@@Parlogram thanks for confirming! I assume they are of no significant interest to collectors, perhaps even worth less than those with standard UK covers..? Another Pepper related question is to how long they stuck with the lack of banding of the tracks. Was this only on mono copies? My stereo version from the 70s is banded. At the time this seemed a big deal and another detail that set it apart from other LPs.

I already commented about my White album here but I've recently acquired another mono pepper and I had some questions. This particular copy the sleeve is very thin card and the colour on the top seams are full yellow , doesn't have any of the red or blue from the back or front . The flipbacks are still the normal length. So would this be a slightly later maybe circa 1968 sleeve ?

hard to say, there are a lot of weird print variants, there is a known batch where the colours are shifted on the rear creating a " ghosting " effect, otherers where the front picture is less sharp & vibrant.

I picked up a cover only of Abbey Road that was rejected ,and has some type of rejection notice as the song titles ,and bottom lettering is out of focus ,and have a pinkish tint . I’m sure it was meant to be discarded but I was fortunate to get my hands on it. It has no record of course . Ps. It has the misaligned Apple. I should dig it out ,and see exactly what it says .

It's a little peculiar that the infamous Beatles logo (as seen on Ringo's drums) never appeared on any of their albums from the 1960's. It should have been tried on 'A Hard Day's Night' or 'Beatles for Sale'. As far as I know, the much later released 'Past Masters' was the only time their logo appeared on an album front cover.

Andrew, after re-watching this video again today, a question re-emerges for me. Have you ever seen any first pressing UK STEREO Sgt Peppers with Garrod & Lofthouse Patents Pending on the back? The only copies I seem to find are those from the 1970 EMI One Box pressing with the blue and red strip at the top of the opened gatefold. Hope this makes sense.

Hi Andrew, Henry again, a few more observations/opinions if i may be so bold Revolver : one minor thing, the stereo can move about a bit, this is a very minor variation imho but it is noticeable & a slide rule is not required to detect it. Oldiies : this lp in stereo probably has more minor variations than any other Beatles album, with the emphasis on the MINOR, but only for Garrod Stereos not for EJD stereos or Garrod monos., The Garrod stereo can move around like Revolver but also there are Garrod sleeves where the stereo is lower down just like the EJ Day stereos, then in 1969 there is an explosion of any combinations of no patents/patents sleeve with stereo no stereo sleeves. As a general rule for many of the sleeves the stereo no stereo indicator was usually but not always linear, it could sometimes disappear then re-appear on later pressings, Sgt Pepper : although this is purely opinion i think the earliest sleeves are the widespines, this is because not only have all the low stampered discs i have seen mono or stereo have come in widespines but also at the launch party in Epstein's flat the Beatles are clearly seen holding a widespine. I suspect the 4th proofs ( all mono ) may have been the proofs for the normal spined sleeves. As you will know all 4th proofs have patents pending on them but in 68 some non-4th proof pat pending sleeves appear along with some where the pat pending has been painted out in red prior to lamination. Stereo pat pendings seem to mainly only exist with stereo 1 box labelled copies White Album : you are quite right in that usually nos 1-300k are mono, 300-600k stereo & 600-625(?) k mono again, however random batches of stereo sleeves exist within the first 300k monos. In 1970 when the side openers appear the first used the same 7 dig number style as the originals starting at 100k to c 150k, but c 1971 when they go to the new 6 dig style they reset to 100k again & go up to just over 300k by early-mid 73 when the numbering was finally discontinued. Yellow Submarine : there is a stereo flipback sleeve prob c 1971 that also has the cat nos on it just as all the other titles flipback sleeves do, it is a hard find but not an impossible one. & you are quite right, when the flipbacks cease the red lines become black lines, & then in the mid 70's they lose the lines altogether Abbey Road : not much to add, the misaligned sleeves may or may not have been the earliest, they may have been a random batch - or batches, also it is possible that both white & black inners can appear on earlieat pressings, the girls at EMI would get a box of inners to handball the discs into, & if there were say 50 girls doing this ( always girls it would seem by the photos from Hayes ) some may have had boxes of apple black inners & the others plain white patents applied ones, however this is just speculation & mainly based on the fact that before the 2000's in 30 years i never saw an original AR with a black inner, so much so that when i first started to see them i assumed that they were swaps. Let it Be : only one thing to add, for some reason there are also export sleeves that can be found inside the box sets, red apples seem to be the norm for the early box sets but green apples & export parlophone sleeves arrive toward the end of the box set era. You are probably correct imho that the apple flyer/poster was a store addition not a factory one. The export parlophone sleeves are an oddity in themselves in that batches continued to be printed possibly up to as late as 1973 - 2-3 years after they were no longer needed !!! Weird. ....So what are the hardest sleeve variants to find ? Imho it has to be the WTB & Help small monos, you just do not see them at all next probably come the AHDN outline stereo & the Rubber Soul stereos, & the mid size mono EJD. You are quite right, these all seem to turn up abroad, so were either for export or for PX stores, they can appear in mainland Europe as well as the states, but again that could be a PX thing. then after those, probably EJD stereo Revolver & then EJD stereo WTB although the former is rarer than the latter inho. An honourable mention goes to the no stereo warning BFS & the unbordered stereo Oldies.but i am sure there are some i've forgotten, but all of these are rarer than say a 4th proof pepper but not a mono/stereo pepper though. And for all those who make it down this far, well done & i hope i did not bore you all too much & once again a big thumbs up to Andrew for all these great vids !!!

They never made it to 999,999. The original numbering stopped somewhere in the 600,000s.

And the things and work you do to help us to know the best for Beatles stuff, is so fine. If you talk about this label (Odeon“pops”) I would be very thankful with that, even the EMI repressing. I found out that there are, at least I count, many label variations, which some EMI was or not involved. One is red/pink and black, like an apocalypse. The second one is the EMI logo in big red and the rest in beige. Number three is pink EMI logo and the rest in white The fourth one is found on the Sgt pepper’s album. The way I recommend to found label variants number one and fourth is the next. Catalog number starts with the number 6 and it has four numbers in total. Example, for Por favor yo (please please me) the catalog number is 6095 and it is one stereo. For Sgt pepper’s lonely hearts club band album the catalog number is 6941. Both of this albums are under a combination (as I can denominate it) of EMI Odeon labels.

Some of it in mono. 4) in some of the mono pressings I put the sing “?” Besucase i don’t know if it is pure mono or false mono. 5) as the LPs, singles and EPs, we’re repressed and reissued under this label.
