My brother and I discussed the day when Revolver came out. In 1966 we had this crappy mono player and yet it was the first time when my brother's realized when a Lp was an excellent record. We played it through and immediately played it all again. We realized for the first time if a record is exceptional, you play it multiple times without interruptions. At that time in 1966, none of us can remember discussing sonic issues. It was just an excellent record. The first mono issue we wore out in less than 3 years. This latest release took us back to the time of reflection and we are very grateful to all those technicians and engineers who give their all to improve this fantastic album.

ATOC has another name, known to every broadcaster and recording engineer on this planet. It’s called “Limiting”. It has always struck me as a bit strange that some of the best compressor/limiters ever made are British, yet on so many British recordings, they don’t seem to know how to use these brilliantly designed and built pieces of equipment to their best advantage. Oh well… life is FULL of mysteries. What is NOT a mystery is just how good Andrew is at making these videos!

i actually really love the panning of the effects on tomorrow never knows. the left-right movement of the effects and also the reverse guitar solo, combined with ringo’s drumming, almost makes the song feel like a clock, with the effects swinging back and forth like a pendulum. it creates an incredibly psychedelic and otherworldly effect that i love!

About the funeral feel of the border: Revolver is almost a concept LP about death. Taxman, Eleanor Rigby, Love You Too, She Said She Said and Tomorrow Never Knows mention it directly, while other songs hint at loss. Lyrically as well as sonically it’s a fascinating essay and worthy of the title ‘masterpiece’. Thanks for this review, watched on the edge of my seat in trepidation to see if my £169 was a worthy spend. Phew!

I agree about She Said She Said being shocking on first listening, however the entire Revolver remix is really good in my opinion. I have no complaints about Tomorrow Never Knows, I like the panning. I really can't imagine it sounding any other way now. I absolutely love it! Thank you for the excellent summary and explanation of the funereal black band, especially with the cute nod on the envelope. As for the mystery caller, who is Jeff/Geoff? Mr. Emerick? Too scary but timely for Halloween. Again, another great video!!! As for the box opening, this is to sit properly on your shelf like the original LP's with front cover in front. So you can pull the LP's from the open, and when you are perusing your collection you can see the front cover.

Revolver is my favorite Beatles album. What this remix does that the others didn't do was keep the overall sound of the album intact. I'm fairly happy with it overall, but one thing I wish Giles did was use the mono mix as a basis for how the remix should sound and expand the mono like he did with Sgt Pepper, rather than make a tighter and cohesive stereo mix, like he did here. Overall, though, I'm extremely happy with the remix. I did buy the CD set, and I was disappointed with how flimsy the sleeves were that held the discs and how cheap they felt. Your in-depth analysis has made me want to start dropping hints for the vinyl set so I can have how the set is supposed to be. I seriously hope that Giles and his team next turn their attention to the post-Pepper/pre-White Album era that includes the exclusive songs for the Yellow Submarine and Magical Mystery Tour films, the single A and B sides "All You Need Is Love", "Baby You're A Rich Man", "Hello Goodbye", "You Know My Name" -- and a version included of it's original 6:12 length, "Lady Madonna", "The Inner Light" and the original version of "Across The Universe". This period should not be erased or lost to time. It should be given the same treatment of everything else so far.

Brilliant review Andrew!! The gold standard on KZbin in my opinion. I was really taken by the stereo remix LP and then I listened to the mono and wow….seemed more organic and very dynamic. Much of the good qualities I thought the remix had also were obvious in the mono (except soundstage of course) with a great 3D presentation. I’m hoping Rubber Soul is next off the rank for this treatment and can’t wait.

Andrew, I believe the box opens to the left so the record spines can be seen and accessed individually along with the book when oriented “correctly” on a shelf. Also if the box opened to the right, the discs would have to be oriented “backwards” in relation to the cover in order to access them individually from the shelf and to keep them from having the open end of the sleeves on the outside with the potential to slip out when moving the box. It seems if you are going to have a vinyl box set in which the records slip out from one end, the most logical and user friend is from the left especially when having a die cut feature such as Let It Be.

I think it's nice that all these versions are available. Some people want to hear the extra hum at the beginning of "Taxman," they have the option to do so with the earlier versions. Some people are acting like the new mix somehow made the older versions disappear from their collections. EDIT: regarding the orientation of the spines in the slipcase, they're supposed to be like that. Slipcases didn't originally have any ornamentation and the books (i.e. the slipcase contents) are displayed spine side out.

Thanks. What a great review. I've listened to the digital version of the new Revolver release a couple of times via headphones and car stereo from iTunes release and LOVED it. I particularly liked the enhanced bass and drums. I was even more impressed by the mono mix. I couldn't believe MONO could sound so good and seem to come from everywhere, like you say, the "3D" effect. So I was going to settle for the digital version in this case. Your unboxing made me begin to appreciate how tangible vinyl is. Touch. Weight. Etc. Now this review has pushed me over the edge. I guess I'll have to invest in another darn boxed set. Thanks, I guess.

Andrew your point about mono sounding three dimensional is so spot on. I never truly enjoyed "Lucy In The Sky with Diamonds" until I heard those "ahhhs" sounding like shimmering diamonds--that was the moment I "got" mono. I agree that the mono here is fantastic while the stereo takes some getting used to. Even the correction of errors (like Paul's vocal overdub goof on Eleanor Rigby) takes me out of the mix at times. As usual another outstanding report, you are KZbin's premier Beatles reference.

As fas as TNK, when we heard it at a preview listening event in New York, we heard the whole album in Atmos in a large studio and the swirling sound effects were mind blowing. As were the ending “Good Day Sunshine” harmonies in the song of the same name. I wasn’t really bothered by no hum at the beginning of Taxman. I was more enamored that we can now hear what John actually says in Dr. Robert instead of Ok Herb on the sessions disc. Lol. All in all, a well done set.

Thank you, Andrew, for these instructive videos. Imagine, how old I am: I bought Love Me Do when it came out in Canada! What you have been doing with these videos (Hollies included) is simply honorable. I am so glad you raised the MONEY issue in this Revolver analysis. Yes, I find the prices outrageous. I just purchased a box set by Brian Eno and one of Chris Rea and they were a third of the price, combined not even half of the cost of this boxset. Even if I am interested in listening to this new edit, I cannot afford this pleasure. It is a large piece of what money I have to survive. And I am a real Beatles fan. These new records are simply too expensive for most of working people. So once again thank you for hinting at this highly political issue.

Excellent review and discussion. Fair and well balanced on all the aspects of the various incarnations of Revolver. I especially enjoyed the discussion of how a mono pressing is made. I expect that whenever a new take on a classic album comes out, half the people are going to like it and half aren't. Finally, I am chuckling because only The Beatles can compel someone to make a 30 minute review of a 35 minute album. 😄

My biggest complaint about the remix is that on tracks with double-tracked vocals, each vocal is hard-panned left and right rather than having both combined into a tight center image. The result is a diffuse, almost out-of-phase vocal.

And in the chorus of Eleanor Rigby, Paul's lead vocal switches to the sides, and he becomes a backing vocalist with the harmonies. There's a very large hole in the middle, because the strings are split so hard left and right. Would've been nice to have the 2nd violin and viola more central. Those who are saying the quartet/octet is spread nicely over the stereo soundscape aren't listening closely.

4:26 as someone in the early 20s I hear that a lot from my peers. Which is pretty funny bc basically every album is initially mixed in mono to prevent phase cancelling. So if you use the mono feature on your smartphone, that’s why every modern album still sounds listenable. A good example of a stereo mix done poorly is Sympathy for the Devil by the stones. If you fold down the stereo mix, it literally kills that entire song. So much so the group had to make a mono mix for Beggars, while the rest is just a fold down. Although there are some other songs like Jigsaw Puzzle that have pretty ugly phase issues when folded down. RAM by Paul is another album that has dedicated mono mix for this reason, although it was only for radio stations and the like. Probably the last time a Beatles related project was mixed in that format. John was a really big fan of mono, which makes sense for his love of classic rock & roll. A couple songs on Plastic Ono are mixed in mono if I remember correctly.

Really love these in-depth videos. They are quickly becoming a sort of Beatles vinyl encyclopedia. In terms of the mono mix being superior I must disagree, but that is always a matter of taste and experience. For me its all about those automatic double-tracked vocals which just never seemed right in mono. This is my only true complaint for the remix as well as the vocals seem "off" and synthetic. Wondering if anyone else felt this way as well. Brilliant content. Thanks as always for your hard work Andrew.

Double-tracked vocals were done to 'thicken' the sound of the voice. Giles has destroyed this effect. By splitting the lead vocal on Here There And Everywhere, they're at around a 'ten to two' position. For me, that's a shame.

@@michaelmcmac3485 I totally agree. I think the original stereo mix presents the vocals truer to the intent of using ADT in the first place.

Andrew, as always, informative and insightful. I was pleasantly surprised at the new stereo mix. “She Said” IMO is great with the separated guitars. TNN doesn’t have the cohesion due to the FX panning. (Surprising they didn’t isolate each FX and place them within the stereo field. ). One thing I JUST learned is that the backwards guitar solo was lifted from the Taxman sessions & flown in. My only real complaint is the demo for “She Said’ which was sourced from a lossy bootleg. There’s other versions out there that sound much better and a shame that the collectors world wasn’t contacted, or enough research was done. In response to “fixing” things on the master (ie: Abbey Road) nothing should be tampered with, unless it’s a splice that needs repairing. Anything inherent in the original mixes should be left as is. All in all, a good sounding package

Wonderful review! Although I've been more enthused about the Giles mixes than you have been up to this point, I had similar experiences upon first listen to the Revolver 2022 stereo mix. At times it just felt so "off" that it was distracting. But upon repeated listens, I've come to appreciate what he and the rest of the team were able to do. Like all the other Giles mixes, they may not be meant for us but more for younger generations expecting modern production techniques. Overall I really like the box, and I'm thrilled that a mono Revolver is now properly available on streaming. Even if the 2009 mono CD may be my preference, this one is so close. And, of course, the outtakes are a gift to the fans. John's Yellow Submarine demo is nothing short of stunning.

Fascinating nerdy deep dive. Hugely enjoyable learning on my end - I am a working jazz musician/producer (acoustic post-bop jazz) and I may actually make some of my own music available in Mono after learning about some of these details (on mono vinyl mastering, for example). Thanks for a great review and a truly informative & engaging video. PS, I purchased the vinyl box set in 2022 the moment it came out, literally the first day it was available at my neighborhood record shop. -Greg Burrows

Great review as always Andrew! I really like these unboxing videos and reviews as I cannot afford any of these box sets, so I enjoy them vicariously via your channel :) One question about heavyweight vinyl though - are heavier records less likely to warp and buckle than records c.100g? My copy of Queen's Greatest Hits 2 would blow away in a breeze and one disc is fairly buckled (though it does still play) I agree that marketing execs really do make far too much of 180g though.

Excellent, in-depth review. Thank you. The stories of the various mixes are always interesting. It must be a daunting task for the people in charge of making new mixes and pressings of Beatles material. On the one hand, they know there is a fairly large market out there of people who will be ready to put down money for almost any new product, but there are also many people ready to pounce on anything they do not like. After seeing you weigh each record in the unboxing video last week, I was relieved to hear you say that whether or not a record weighs 180 grams is not necessarily all that important. I also feel that objecting to the removal of the high sound at the beginning of Taxman is a bit much, but I haven't heard the song without it, so I might have a different opinion if I did. They were probably thinking of it as an inadvertent technological artifact. But the quibbles are part of the fun, and you asked us to tell you what we thought!

Hi Andrew, Thanks for the review. I love the set and agree that the mono is better than the 2014 box but glad to have both. I felt the mono ‘smoked’ the new stereo mix, which I prefer to the compromised original stereo mix. My records came flat, clean and perfect - so no complaints with GZ. I also agree with the cover being on the dark side, lightening the photos would have helped I think. I cannot believe that you were not sent an advanced copy - your channel is the best Beatles review channel by far IMHO. Thanks again for the detailed review - watched it twice as there is a lot of information here. Cheers Matt

So glad I saw this one. (long inhale - long story) I have a mono pressing of the 1966 Capitol version, the 2014 mono reissue on LP as well as CD and now here's this new mono mix in 2022. You've given me the idea to run an A-B comparison between 2009 / 2014 and 2022, because until I saw this clip I didn't think Apple would actually make a new mono mix, I thought they'd just slapped 2009 / 2014 onto this set. I should also do the same for Sgt Pepper.

Andrew, excellent review!! Great analysis!! For me, the new remix, while greatly improved in places, falls short in a lot of places!! I'm a remix engineer myself, & these guys did not do the work properly when it came to separate George & John's (or Paul's) electric guitars. "She Said She Said" is a bad mix, with one or both guitars completely dropping out in places. This happens on 2 or 3 other tracks as well. My biggest disappointment is "And Your Bird Can Sing". Paul & George's lead guitars are together, when it has been demonstrated that they can be COMPLETELY separated & panned left & right for a stunning mix (leaving John's guitar in the center). There are other elements like bass levels, percussion levels etc. And the stereo lead vocals are annoying. Lead vocal should be center with harmonies spread. The 2014 mono mix is the go to mix. Tiger.
