Judging by recent history, we should be getting a new Beatles remix and box set in October/November 2023. The smart money is on Rubber Soul, so we thought than rather complain bout it after it has been released, we'd give Apple our ideas and requests as to what fans and collectors would like to see included in a Rubber Soul super deluxe box set.
Using what we know to exist, we suggest tracks and mixes which should be available to the team and offer a very special extras from ourselves. Let us know in the comments what you would like to see in such as set and if you have anything worthy of inclusion. You never know, it may make the cut!

I too want a deluxe MMT package. But you can hear a surround version of Strawberry Fields on the Sgt Pepper deluxe box and, i think, the 1+ dvd from a few years back. And i think the MMT movie blu ray has the songs with a 5.1 option. And both songs are on the Love soundtrack dvd with a 5.1 option if you buy the cd/dvd package of that.

It's been done by former engineers, now collectors. There's also a two-track mix matching the two-track stereo of the first few albums. Some have tried a synch-up of She Loves You, but they are easily identifiable and obviously, don't sound like the original. The two-track that I have is the real deal and sounds fantastic! I hope , as well, that at least the "Please, Please Me" and "With The Beatles" albums, are given the remixing treatment now available.

Didn't Paul basically record his bass live for their first few albums? DI wasn't around until the mid 60s. I'd love to hear those old bass tracks with the new mixing, it would probably be completely eye opening.

Good news for you, stereo She Loves You will be out later this month on the "Red Album" remix. I don't really think A Hard Day's Night and Beatles for Sale need stereo remixes that badly. No idea why they released them on mono for the first CDs in the 80s. The stereo versions sound great.

For me, the ultimate Rubber Soul box set would include new stereo and mono versions of the UK album PLUS a new stereo version of the US Rubber Soul. I've always felt the "I've Just Seen a Face" side one opener and John's "It's Only Love" followed by "Girl" opening side two, not to mention the 2 false acoustic guitar starts to "I'm Looking Through You," made the Capitol stereo Rubber Soul the ultimate Beatles acoustic-driven record. Such a pleasant Sunday listen!

I loved the American stereo version of Rubber Soul with the vocals and overdubs on one side and the rhythm track on the other. It revealed for the first time ow the songs were constructed. The choice of songs was great as well, crating a folk rock Beatles album. As an American who first bought the Beatles' American configuration LPs in the late '70s, recorded them to cassette and listened to them a lot in the early '80s during college, and then bought the British configuration CDs in the late '80s, I was worried I might have imprinted too hard on the American versions, but found myself adapting easily to the Brit ones. I think it would probably be harder for someone to wean themselves off the US versions if they had been part of the original Beatles' American fandom in the '60s.

Hi Andrew. In answer to your question about the extreme separation on the stereo Rubber Soul mix: George Martin was at that time trying to please both the stereo buyers and mono buyers - More and more record player cartridges were able to play both mono and stereo (previously you'd have to purchase either one or the other). By keeping all the instruments hard left and right you get a much better balance when playing on a mono player. The further centre a sound is in the stereo field the louder it is, so by keeping them separated you get an all round better balance sound on mono reproducers. This was a period of fast transition and EMI wanted the public to start purchasing stereo records even if they had a mono player. Those who bought the stereo were few and far between, but the extreme separation certainly gave them their money's-worth on their posh stereograms. All the best from the UK!
@MaxGretinski
@MaxGretinski Жыл бұрын
The idea behind the mix was associated with the fact that modern (1965) mono turntables could be used to play stereo LPs. If one plays a stereo LP that has a centered stereo mix on a mono player, it folds down to mono, but the fold-down effect keeps the material that is at the center at a different volume than it would be if one combined two discrete channels. The mix was designed to have the same sound whether it was played on a stereo player or on a mono player with a lightweight tone arm.

In December 1965, I brought in the album to my 5th grade class for a special Christmas party (though practically every kid present was Jewish!) "knowing" that my fellow classmates would be thrilled to hear the new Beatles album... but they weren't. Most of them wanted something to party and dance to, and most of the U.S. version of Rubber Soul did not consist of strong hoofers... EXCEPT "Run For Your Life"! This was the ONLY track that got a positive response from the rest of the kids. My late sister, who was 12 years older than me and preferred listening to Joan Baez, commented to my mother, after I had bragged about playing Rubber Soul for her the previous night, labelled it "sophomoric". I had no idea what the word meant... but from the sound of her voice, I had a feeling it wasn't a compliment. I still prefer the American version of "Rubber Soul".

They already have remixes for the Yellow Submarine and Magical Mystery Tour songs, so I'm hoping that one day they'll make them available outside the dvds/blu-rays of the movies. I'd also love the earlier takes of I Am The Walrus, followed by the later takes. A "full" version of You Know My Name is something I'm surprised hasn't really happened yet. And hearing the raw studio takes of It's All Too Much would be a blast. Would rather see Rubber Soul done first, and I hope that as they get closer to the beginning, they include live performances of some of the songs (the Beatles did consider themselves a live band after all). There are other performances on tape, and with the de-mix technology we could finally hear the Beatles when they were most energetic.

Totally agree with all of your thoughts and ideas for the reissue. One other difference in songs on the UK vs. American version of Rubber Soul is "The Word". John's lead vocal is double tracked slightly differently in the verses. If they do offer a mono mix, I'm hoping for one with a little more top end. My copy from the 2009 mono cd boxed set sounds muffled and thick. I've added a significant amount of high end to brighten up the sound when I play it. Also, they need to make a new mono mix of "Day Tripper" to eliminate that bad sound dropout on the master after the guitar solo. It has been repaired on the new stereo versions but was still present on "Mono Masters".

Actually, I certainly feel that the 1963 demo of What Goes On clearly does belong on the Rubber Soul box as a related ‘in progress’, documentation also, as being a goodie in itself - for that one alone, I would have bought the box (not that I wouldn’t buy it anyway, but you get my point). And that absolutely wonderful demo of We Can Work It Out must still exist in full, or what? I do hope so - it would be nice if Sir Paul would agree to include it on the hopefully new deluxe box set! The little we’ve heard is so good that it should be shared - pretty please with sugar on top? If all we’ve heard of it is what’s left, please feel like including it, anyway! I have an understanding that Macca has an archive of his own that he wants to keep for his personal memories and I can understand him in many ways. Yet, I can also understand us fans too, still hungry for more historical and always wonderful Beatles material, no matter the fidelity. There’s got to be more home demos, a 1963 live recording on a university with songs not available even on bootlegs comes to mind, and of course an unedited In Spite Of All The Danger etc. I know, those mentioned were not Rubber Soul-related perhaps (with a few demos excepted maybe), but so what? Personally, I’d love to see that lovely «Beatle Talk» recording from the Think For Yourself-session would be wonderful to include in the future box set as well. If Apple/Universal could include those great ‘bio-interviews’ (which I love them for including) on an earlier archival release, they should do the same with that most entertaining ‘chat recording’ - but unedited, not excluding things like McCartney’s «Been having a shit lately, Megan?», it’s one of the very highlights! And «The Music Of Lennon/McCartney» and other nice visual material would be top cool, I fully agree with you, Andrew. I guess it’s way over the top to hope for that The Beatles/Universal/Apple could add McCartney’s «Unforgettable» Christmas give-away show as well - I guess this could become a big (and delightful) box! Dreams are free. Yes, we ‘Socks And Sandals’ are terribly greedy, aren’t we?

I can’t wait for a Rubber Soul remix! Everything outlined is what I would expect too, even though I was unaware of the few takes of The Word and Michelle. Perhaps having a non fade out version of Michelle like what was in Rock Band would be awesome. And any MMT or Yellow Submarine box set would be amazing! We really need an updated remix of Hey Bulldog.

Hey Bulldog sounds great (and powerful) on the Yellow Submarine Songtrack CD, in fact, all the remixed songs on that CD sound fantastic. It would be nice to have Hey Bulldog run complete to the cold ending, as heard on the weaker sounding version found on the Rock Band CD.

Rubber Soul, is one of my favorite albums cause it was the beginning of the Beatles creative song writing and this Lp proves that they were going in a different direction. Now as far as making a box set of Rubber Soul, I'm all in favor of it because, since they had already made box sets of the later LPs from Revolver to Let It Be, with the exceptions of Magical Mystery Tour and the Yellow Submarine, I believe that they should make one for this album. Now what I would include in this box set, is a full remastered album, an album filled with outtakes, an ep album with at least six songs, the 2 songs being the double a single of Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out and the other four songs, from the Rubber Soul Lp. So to give a little example of what the ep should be, it'll be like this Rubber Soul Ep: Side One 1. Day Tripper 2. We Can Work It Out 3. Drive My Car Rubber Soul Ep: Side Two 1. Nowhere Man 2. In My Life 3. If I Needed Someone Now some may differ as far as the ep is concerned, but this is just my opinion of what the ep should be. Also, I would like to have a little documentary on the Rubber Soul Lp sorta like mini-documentary from the 2009 stereo box set, but with more depth.

With Paul’s announcement that they’ve completed another John Lennon demo I think they’re releasing something Anthology related this year. When they get around to Magical Mystery Tour they definitely have to include the four Beatles songs that appeared for the first time on Yellow Submarine. It would probably be on an EP but I hope the vinyl version will be a 45 like in the Let It Be box. It’s much easier to store than a 7” that’s floating around.

My out-there idea for a Rubber Soul boxset would be to have TWO stereo mixes! Why? The first would be the “modern” remix keeping in line with all the other remixed albums so far (loud, compressed, too much bass, de-mixed, etc), while the second would be a more “classical” remix. Rubber Soul is the one album in the Beatles’ catalogue that has indisputably needed a remix from day one, because of its reversion back to the extreme instruments/vocal panning when it wasn’t technically necessary. So the purpose of a “classical” remix would be to give us the mix we could’ve gotten in 1965, more in line with the mixes for AHDN, For Sale and Help! No de-mixing or other gimmicks, as those would be reserved for the “modern” mix. Rubber Soul is the big one I’ve always wanted to hear remixed properly, and I’ve accepted that Giles Martin’s approach to remixing just isn’t for me, so it’d be a shame if this album (again, the only one whose stereo mix could’ve actually been done better back then just with what’s on the 4-track) went without a good-faith remix that actually tries to respect the sounds and methodology of the period.

As an American who grew up on the US version, I would really like to see a true mono (not a Capitol fold down) version of the US album included as a bonus disc. That way they wouldn’t have to put much effort into it, and it could give the super deluxe set some girth. I do have my fingers crossed that there are home demos that might make their way to this set. But I feel like with so few outtakes, they may as well include everything, including the tape of the group working out their harmonies. As for video elements, I’ve been seeing some high rez scans with what sounds like remastered audio of some of their concerts on KZbin pop up here and there. Maybe an infamous concert, along with television appearances and promo videos? Or if there’s any video of them in the studio? I certainly hope that better attention to detail will go into the packaging as well.

New True Stereo Mix + Polished Mono demos + Polished American song order version keeping "fake-stereo" I definitely want one part of the package to be a polished version of the "fake stereo" left-right mix. Recently I hear too many "content creators" saying how desperate and how incomprehensible that mix is, but my friends and I back in the day loved it. Being able to use the pan knob and isolate the instruments or just the vocals was a lot of fun--especially on "The Word". That kind of mix influenced other 60s bands to mix their songs similarly, so it had legs and wasn't as unfathomable as some reviewers make out. It's a part of Rubber Soul history and shouldn't get a bad reputation in some kind of zeitgeist. Featuring that mix with the American song order would be great for one disc. The American selection gives the album more of an acoustic feel than the British one which makes it special in and of itself. It is the only American version that could be said to beat the British ones.

As much as I respect Giles Martin's expertise and dedication, I'd much prefer a stereo remix inspired by the outstanding work of Peter Cobbin on YS Songtrack. With a little bit more "air" in the soundstaging, an album following his restrained approach would easily deal with the separation issues from the existing mixes while respecting the feel and vision of the mono. The way has been shown.

The Beatles just like Elvis Presley preferred the mono mixes on their masters at that time because they grew up in the mono age of music and that was what all they knew, and what was sentimental to them during their childhood and that sentiment stuck with them as preference. That would be like you today making an album and the studio wanting to release it with some Dolby Atmos - 9.1 pro logic type channel thing going on, and I'm quite sure you would be telling them that you prefer your work to be in, what you are well known to have been used to listening to all others in -->STEREO

I would love to hear the vocals centered on all the tracks. With digitally un-mixing the tracks possible, maybe make a discrete 4.0 or 4.1 multitrack on a DVD or Blu-ray. If other discs are also made available, have unheard or rare versions included. Also maybe other songs recorded at that time and either only released on singles or shelved projects.

Regarding the vocal-right mixes, George Martin was looking for a way to produce a stereo record which could be played on a mono player with a good balance of vocals to instruments. He felt that a normal stereo mix with vocals to center would reproduce with the vocals about 4 dB too loud when played on a mono player. So, the vocals right stereo mix was his attempt to satisfy both formats. The first two albums were recorded on the BTR-3 twin track tape recorder, and Norman Smith put the vocals on one track and the instruments on the other for the only purpose of later balancing them for a mono mix. It was not intended to be used for making a stereo mix as that was not customary for pop groups at that time. Abbey Road studios did have 4 track facilities at the time (Telefunken M10 tape decks) but they were only used for classical recordings. However, Capitol Records did want a stereo version of the first albums and so mixes were made from the two available tracks, and if the vocal track had been panned to the center of the mix, they would have had to put the instrumental track on the left or right, and that would have been very lopsided.

Thanks Andrew 👍 I pretty much agree with all your suggestions for Rubber Soul. But an idea I do have, is that Apple really should have been looking after The Beatles U.S. fans, and unfortunately, the boat has already sailed for Revolver. As you've mentioned, the sound quality of the US releases was pretty ordinary. This would have been the perfect chance to have included the US versions of each album, Remastered, with the US tracklist, as well as the UK releases. As you know, I am from Australia, so we followed the UK, but when you think of the US fans who bought all those copies we aren't familiar with, I think it would have been a nice thank you! They could include the US Rubber Soul, and how about a RSD release of Yesterday And Today, completely Remastered with a butcher cover! Future releases, eg. Help!, could include the US Soundtrack version etc. + Beatles '65..., continuing all the way down to With The Beatles + Meet The Beatles, Please Please Me with Introducing The Beatles etc. You may say I'm a Dreamer...😉😄✌️ Jase

George Martin Remixed Rubber Soul for cd in the 1980s and that’s the version the cd generation has primarily been listening to. That being said I’m excited for a proper stereo mix of Rubber Soul. When I say proper mix I mean getting rid of the hard panning. I don’t think there are any bad stereo edits on this album or missing sound effects like other records. It’s not like Giles is changing the mix when it comes down to the actual song. He’s just fine tuning his fathers mono mix and I love this.

I'd like Apple to revert back to including a blu-ray with hi-res/5.1/Atmos mixes. It should be possible to include ALL relevant mixes and session outtakes etc. in a CD box set - new stereo/mono mixes, original mixes, US mixes. These albums were quite short, and stereo + mono mixes can readily fit onto a single CD, with room to spare for contemporary single tracks (Day Tripper/We Can Work it Out). The Revolver vinyl box was well done; the CD box not so much...
