For me, this is Paul's most emotional love song. It makes me sad everytime I hear it, but in a reflective, positive way, not in a melancholic way. This song makes you realize that there is a certain sadness that makes you understand life better, that makes you love happy moments better. It is that powerful a song.

This is not the over-orchestrated, overblown, dramatic and impact missing track from the Let It Be album, this is a song of falling snow in the dark, rain on muddy country roads, of cold wind through the red and brown leaves of autumn. It's beautiful. Such sadness lies in Paul's voice, like if he's on the verge of crying. Still there sounds a sort of hope and power in such simplicity. Just like Paul intented it to be.

@movierun2 жыл бұрын
Well, BOTH versions are good - just different arrangements. I've noticed that people who see this as a simple love song prefer the "low key" arrangement, while those who interpret it as a song about spiritual longing are moved by the strings and female chorus in the "overblown" version. Well-written music like this can be arranged in many different ways and still sound good.

Paul wrote many, many fantastic songs, of course, but every time I hear this one, I think it’s got to be his finest….all things considered. An extremely beautiful melody, great lyrics that fit the overall mood of the song, and then the gorgeous piano instrumentation that adds so much to the song and makes it even more memorable and endearing to so many people. Many people say they cry when they hear this song…..every time they hear it, and they don’t know why! This has GOT to be one of the greatest, most beautiful songs ever written. 😌
@donaldcarpenter53282 жыл бұрын
And, then I WONDER?Did John leaving Paul lead to his total DISFUNCTION as a song WRITER? I mean, what has he wrote or recorded in the LAST 40 years that even APPROACHED this greatness??? NOTHING! Paul IS MORE DEAD than either of John or George, and THAT is what is TRULY SAD! This song was WRITTEN about the coming BREAK UP of the BEATLES....BTW
@pocopico74092 жыл бұрын
@@donaldcarpenter5328: I have to agree with you, Donald. I’ve often thought the same thing. What happened to all that talent after they broke up? Prior to that, Paul could write a hit song nearly every day of the week. But after the breakup, you could count his really memorable songs on one hand over the next 40 years! My favorite McCartney song after the Beatles was “My Love”. That’s one of the few that sounded like it could’ve been a Beatles song.
@mileswalcott72412 жыл бұрын
Is it because it was the last released single from their let it be album. It sums up the journey of the Beatles.
@pocopico74092 жыл бұрын
@@mileswalcott7241: Yes, I do think that’s one of the big reasons, Miles. Whether they intended (or meant) it to be their “last” song, or not, that’s certainly the way most of the public thought of it, and it was a sad one at that! I was around back then and I do remember “The Long and Winding Road” as being their last release. I think it was right around the same time as “Let It Be,” actually. But I definitely think people think of, and associate it with being the last song of the Beatles…and, therefore, the end of The Beatles. Let’s face it, it does sound like a farewell song.

This is so beautifully simple, strangely this is how I remembered it. I came here because I heard a version played today on the radio with a huge orchestral accompaniment which just didn’t sound right, in fact it sounded like a Peter Skelern Ballard if anyone remembers him.
@maxwellfan552 жыл бұрын
I like this naked arrangement possibly the best. Can just hear the others slightly in the background supporting Paul, it's sweet and nice to listen out for it. Someone talked Paul's vocal vulnerability in this song, what a great way of putting it.

A soul filled song that truly showed us the struggle of breaking up with people you have been friends with for a while. It had to be done because the individuals had to much talent and needed to spread their own wings. Although they aren't the most talented band, I believe them to be the greatest band of all time because of their influence. This song represents our love for others who are leaving us. "In the end, the love you make is the love you take".

The long and winding road that leads to your door Will never disappear I've seen that road before it always leads me here Leads me to your door The wild and windy night that the rain washed away Has left a pool of tears crying for the day Why leave me standing here, let me know the way Many times I've been alone and many times I've cried Anyway you'll never know the many ways I've tried And still they lead me back to the long and winding road You left me standing here a long, long time ago Don't leave me waiting here, lead me to you door But still they lead me back to the long and winding road You left me standing here a long, long time ago Don't keep me waiting here , lead me to you door Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

This song, this road, while I believe to know the reason written, as does Paul, creates an emotion. Not only the sound but the words, though words not needed. Wind blowing through the leaves on a trail once shared or a sunset, that sound, that place, moments...I am thankful for. I know it was a place, moment, beautiful, as all are. Yesterday is only in the mind, the heart. But today is hopefully the place that reflects that place/moment.

This is how The Long and Winding Road shoud have been released - all stripped back. Paul never liked the actual released version which was 'over produced' by Phil Spector
@bizbot16559 жыл бұрын
+andyrob35 I'm an avid Beatles fan and have been for over 30 years and I dont even own this album ( have Let it Be Naked instead). I think Phil Spector did a lousy job with it. The Glyn Johns version in my opinion was the best compilation.

I like this better too but the story always was that Ringo called McCartney on the phone and asked him if he liked the acetate and he said it was ok. He didn't sour on the song outright until a few days after when he had an outburst on Ringo and formal announced Beatles was over beating out Lennon from announcing such due to legal obligations. And Spector was never wrong when he pointed out that McCartney happily accepted the Academy Award and went on to use Spector's arrangement in over 25 years of touring.
@aerialkate8 жыл бұрын
+TRJ2241987 I love Spector's arrangement. The ghostly choir was a bit much, that's where he fell down for me. But the lush strings and harp really added to the song. Lennon was right to have him on board, if only for his work on this track. It's a great song which stands alone even with piano and voice alone, but I love Spector's take on it.

This raw version of long winding road by Paul only shows how talented he really is, I find myself wanting listen again and again.
@Flewti22 жыл бұрын
I agree, and from a later version, a keen listener will notice how Paul at this stage, is still "working" on note choices for the melody and phrasing.
