I was 16 in 1962 when I first saw the Beatles on tv. I recall saying to my younger brother that this band were going to be big. Their music was so different and now as a 74 year old hobby guitarist I understand why. I am now absolutely fascinated by these videos. Thanks Mike for not only showing me how the Beatles did what they did but also for bringing back the memories of my teens in the 60s from a completely new perspective.

All that explains why Beatles songs, no matter how many times one listens to them, there are invariably new nuances, choirs, or even notes that I'd thought did not sound quite like that the previous time I've heard them before. It's great though, that you can explain these things with so much clarity and with such infectious enthusiasm. I love your videos and can listen to them over and over again. Thanks for giving so much.

These extraordinary chords and inner harmonies were what made the Bs so special. None of this happened by accident or chance. They were unusually curious and attentive to whatever was musically going on around them, what other bands were doing, what was on the records they liked, learning whatever sounded good to them, and incorporating it into their music. Being highly dedicated to it, they lived music virtually 24 hours every day for many years, and this continued right to their last recording. That they had special and unusual musical talents might not have yet occurred to them and was certainly not yet fully developed in 1963, however, by then they were already showing the promise of a magnificent musical future. Surely this was the quality that a serious, classically-trained musician like George Martin saw in them and made him want to produce their music. Thank you so much for taking the time to show us what was special about even these early, simple songs.

Enjoyed the highlighting of that vocal interval in Please Please Me. I feel like a lot of songwriters today are afraid of having any kind of 'clash' - here The Beatles are using one of the most dissonant intervals possible, but it works perfectly because of the brevity and the timbres of their voices. They really knew how to add just the right amount of 'sour' to enhance the overall sweetness
@MPfrance4 жыл бұрын
Tom Christie - YES!!! I'm so pleased you understood what I was pointing out. Apparently many folks did not understand. And YES (again) you are SOOOOOOOO correct! That minor 2nd interval is WAY hard to pull off but John & Paul do it effortlessly. SUCH a tension and release to form (as you so eloquently said) the "overall sweetness."
@Willriii4 жыл бұрын
@@MPfrance Paul holds the same note, so what John sings is basically a passing tone that creates tension and then resolves. There is an interview with Paul somewhere where he admits he realized that was a very novel harmony. I thank you for what you are doing Mike, not many people are scrutinizing the Beatles this closely , especially from a guitar voicing standpoint. Quite a while back, (I'm a long time subscriber) you inspired me to go back and watch all the live recordings, what's on KZbin anyway, and watch John's left hand very closely and figure out what is banjo, what is Chuck Berry. I think it would be fascinating if you analyzed these covers from a standpoint of this is the original, this is what the beatles made of it. You've already done half that video. On another topic altogether, Yes, there is quite an rambunctious debate on whether Ringo played drums on I feel fine, and who sang what, but you are the go to source on dissecting the guitar

I turned 13 in 1964 and loved the Beatles music and began playing guitar. Being so young, it was so challenging leaning their music. No youtube lessons. Music store lesson teachers, for the most part, hadn't a clue. Music books were usually wrong and almost always in a simplified basic different key. We learned by moving the needle of the record player and repeating sections of songs trying to figure out what notes and chords they were playing. Of course, they were usually playing different voiceings of the same chords, which made it even harder to really get it right. I still play and appreciate someone that has taken the time to break down these songs to the individual guitar parts. Thanks Mike and keep them coming. PS, Mike I found a video with you accompanying Phil Keaggy playing The Wind and The Wheat. Very nice! Please tell Phil we would love to see him here in the Cincinnati, Ohio area again! Hope you come along, too!

The knack the Beatles had for picking the right voicing--the perfect interval--for any given chord is something seldom discussed. Even players who get the chords right with their songs can fail to see the importance of which voicings are in use. There are a lot of ways to play each chord and a lot of ways to move between them. Whether a chord is open or based in a barre form dramatically affects the dynamic feel of attack, and the Beatles switch those options up where others would homogenize their approach to the closest set of voicings. The Beatles seem to magically gravitate to the best possible options every time. They choose the interval which puts the best possible note at the bottom/top, and which underscores a harmony with the vocals best. It's truly remarkable to a degree I think goes unappreciated.

I got my first guitar and started several years of lessons at Canton Guitar School (Canton, OHIO) at age 8 in 1960. Heard "Love Me Do" and became and instant Beatles fan when it hit the US in April 1964 and formed a band with some school buddies. I was 12, the other 3 guys were 14 and 15. Played parties, sock hops and even made an appearance on the WEWS Cleveland Ohio Gene Carroll amateur competition show on Valentines Day 1965. We played "Walk, Don't Run" by the Ventures. We lost to the tap dancers!

I really enjoy listening to your analyses of the Beatles song chords. You sharpen all the corners and tighten all up to make it sound so spot on --and that just makes me smile and say, "yeah dude! that's what I've been missing!" It's the realization that it's not about my skill so much as my chord selections that makes your videos so rewarding. But beyond all that, and perhaps just as important, your enthusiasm for it all is really inspiring. Thanks for your work.

The Beatles were constantly looking for unusual and unexpected chords. It's part of what makes them so special. Most others in popular music are content with hackneyed chord progressions, but not them. Those little touches and diversions into unexpected territory and tonal color make the listener lean forward with expectation. Thanks for detailing these early examples.

Great job Mike and so interesting. I’ve been a Beatle freak since I was 10 and that was 57 years ago. The Beatles got me playing guitar at 10 in 1963. Been playing Beatle Tunes with my 2 Beatle freak brothers ever since. Your right, the Beatles were way ahead of themselves regarding chord shaping and voicing even if they did not understand it technically. I understand none of them read or wrote music or were trained in any music academy's I used to have all the gear Vox Royal Guardsman, Rickenbacker 360 then. I have a Rick 355 Limited Edition John Lennon signature (long scale) Also still have a mint Rick 620 Tom Petty type. You keep the Beatles alive and interesting for a new generation and that my man is Gods work. The greatest band of all time. If Geoge Martin was the 5th Beatle we may have to make you the 6th Beatle. Thanks Mike for all you do for music in general. Your a fantastic player and you have a great personality. Keep strumming my friend. How do you like living and working in France compared to the USA ? I appreciate how you analyze these songs... not the way your average listener would hear them. but the way listeners like you, me, and others who listen over and over to the various parts of the background instruments behind the vocals which have a life if their own, separately, without the vocals. It takes a patient listener to separate those parts out and do what you are doing and it is very refreshing, even with songs that are 50 years old. Right on bro!

Terrific video Mike! It's totally mind blowing that they were able to write the lyrics, come up with those chords, and sing those harmonies to those songs without any formal music lessons. Except for George who did take a few music classes in school. They were obviously great at playing by ear & learning to use progressions of chords to fit their voices. I think you call that musical genius. What's truly incredible is how their music changed over time & became so unreal. Anyway, hope that you are doing well & staying safe....

As always Mike you bring a nostalgic smile to my old soul when you play any of the songs from the greatest band in history. I dig how you do a lot of your instruction on that sweet sounding L5 (I think). I’m with you too with our man Wes. Is funny how complex music can be like in a jazz mode and it takes a lot of study to get there. Then you have a group like the Beatles that were more simplistic at least in the early days but the music, vocal harmonies and just the whole groove worked so well. They were like jelly and peanut butter, they were so talented . It must have been like a dream to meet Paul. Now I’m sounding like a screaming 67 year old kid listening to Tell Me Why. One of my favorites in the HDN movie next to, If I Fell. Thank you Mike for all the joy you bring players of all ages. You are a kind man and an extremely talented musician.
