I hve always liked how Paul plays the bass more like a guitar than a bass. This one rocks aggressively and is strangely contrasting the underlying overall "soft"feeling of the song....
@kirajlerner7 ай бұрын
Are people seriously thinking *John* played this? I'd love to hear an example of John's bass style that nears this level of melodic complexity, multiple attacks, syncopation, and frankly skill. Paul played some of the heaviest lead guitar moments in other songs (Taxman, Drive My Car, Birthday, Back in the USSR, among others)--I don't know why some think he wouldn't be this aggressive on the bass that was his primary instrument in the band when called for. He was a chameleonic, innovative musician. As was John, of course, in different areas. That's why the Beatles were the Beatles. Regardless, if there was a pinch-hitter on the bass for some unknown reason--when they already had Clapton pinch-hitting on lead as George wanted--that substitute bassist definitely wasn't John.

@@sharps47 Incorrect, only one bass and that is the Jazz bass played by Paul. Absolute 100% fact. The basic track consisted of George on acoustic and vocals, Paul on piano and sharing a track with John who plays the organ (but only on the bridges), Clapton on guitar and Ringo on drums. The bass is an overdub, which is joined on the bridges with George's 12 strring. George Harrison in two magazine interviews, Guitar Player Non 1987 and Playboy Sept 1993 specifically mentions Paul's overdubbed bass.

Everyone knows Paul played bass on the song, it's because (apparently) there is a second bass underneath Paul's bass. Using his Fender Bass VI, John added a second bass during the bridge, which was also backed by a 12-string guitar. A bit similar to "Rocky Raccoon". On that, Paul played his guitar and he left the bass line to both John (Fender Bass VI) and George (Fender Jazz Bass).
@marcusphelan573 ай бұрын
@@dumbass298 There's no second bass. John plays organ on the bridge, sharing a track with Paul's piano. That's the full extent of John's involvement.

@@marcusphelan57 Yes John played the organ, but he also overdubbed a bass and a twelve string guitar. There is another isolation, specifically looking at the bridge and you can hear a bass without treble under the guitar and Paul's bass
@marcusphelan573 ай бұрын
@@dumbass298 Sorry but that's complete nonsense. There is one Jazz bass played by Paul (and specifically mentioned by George in two interviews), zero Fender VI involvement. I'd really love to hear this second bass, I've had the isolations for 15 years and I've yet to hear it. And why? Why would you double the bass with another (sort of) bass as well as add a 12 string? How many other songs of George's on the White Album did John play on? If he didn't bother playing on any other song, why would he be playing on overdubbing sessions on George's songs? John was perhaps the worst bass player in the world and as Ringo said, he hated playing it. Why would you get a terrible bass player to play on your song if there was no need for it. They had no choice for the Let It Be sessions because the intention was to do everything live and with so many Paul songs being written for piano, and George's guitar deemed more important, John got dumped with the bass chores. Watch Paul's spirits sink while trying to get John to play the simple bass notes for The Long And Winding. This John-The Bassist myth has gone on too long.

@marcusphelan573 ай бұрын
@@mraybeck Yes it was so terrible, no one has ever heard it. You see, it's not there. You can find John's not-so-terrible-but-simple-one-note bass on the first, slow version recorded two months before the final, fast version on the album. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6CuZHuvfrFjm9Esi=xgW1zqmUk3gjZCjy That this mention in Mal Evans' diary of John' playing bass was mistakenly attributed to the final version as well, has caused much confusion over the years...obviously. Rather than being terrible, for those with ears you can hear Paul's powerfully rocking going-for-it AND plucking-very-hard Jazz bass playing on the final, 21st take - and screaming a guide vocal while doing it (listen to Take 17.) After 21 takes of doing this, maybe the playing gets a tad sloppy - but nowhere near the level of Lennon's sloppy bass playing (for example, 1 see "Get Back" and 2 listen to Fixing A Hole's basic track.)
