Is it a warning? A threat? A dare? Does it come from a friend or a rival? Or all of the above? I like the way these different elements are each brought out in turn.
Here’s the link to the original song by The Beatles:

I loved all the fun you were having with the lyrics, it gave me a good chuckle at times. I appreciated your going into depth on the cool key change from E to G. Ringo plays both the drums and bongos, by recording different tracks. Same with Paul who plays both the bass and piano. Good observation on Lennon's voice becoming more expressive, along with also noting it starting out of pitch with the piano. Something you find in the older recordings, before the days of auto-tune. You get something that sounds more genuine and raw, more human and emotionally expressive, instead of the artificially corrected pitches of today's recordings. An enjoyable reaction.

This has always been one of my favorite songs from "Help". The intro with John " Your gonna lose that girl" with Paul and George answering with Yes yes you're gonna lose that girl" is so cool, it sets the tone for the verse and answering back throughout the song. I think it's brilliant. The chorus right before the guitar break, Paul and George with "Watch out what you do". John not singing with them but then let's out that "Yeah" with an exclamation point, so damn cool! Love George's little solo too. The perfect 1965 pop song. No one was doing stuff like this in 65. Wait till you get to side 2 with John's "It's Only Love" barely 2 minutes long and John said in 1980 he hated this song. Said it was the worse song he ever wrote. I love this song, John's vocals are so touching and show his softer side. He said it was crap, they needed a song for the Lp so he banged it out. At this point they had to pump records out fast, they had no time off. Remember they made this Lp and shot the movie "Help" at this time. George Martin said for a song John hated he put a lot of time into it with four guitars. John and George on two acoustic guitars and both on electric guitars. "Help" has to be one of their most underrated album's, it's a great record and gives us a hint what was coming just four months later in December with "Rubber Soul". You're gonna be blown away, the growth is incredible! When you get to that one you really need to do their single " Day Tripper"/"We Can Work It Out" released as a double "A-side single the same day as " Rubber Soul" on December 2, 1965 . Who Does that? There was no B-side, both were A-sides, that's how they promoted it and both shot to #1 in the UK and US. If you don't do these two before "Rubber Soul" you're cheating both us and yourself, they're that damn good. On "Rubber Soul" you'll hear John, Paul and George singing "a capella" on the intro on John's "Nowhere Man" one of his favorite Beatles songs and mine too. Peace ❤😅

The dynamic between the lead vocal and the choral backing is known as call-and-response and is found in the black church, although its roots go back as far as ancient Greek drama. The direct influences on this song are the hits of Neil Sedaka such as "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do," from several years earlier. (Sedaka happened to be a Juilliard-trained piano virtuoso.)

Right - the original version of "Because" had musical accompaniment. Sir George Martin produced Cirque de Soleil's "The Beatles Love" with his son Giles, which started off with the same vocals sans backing music. As this album was released in 2006, I'm convinced it was Sir George Martin's nod to Brian Wilson in appreciation for the release of his album "Smile", which was released in 2004 and started with the a cappella "Our Prayer". Two geniuses communicating through music, as they had done so astonishingly in the 60s.

The Beatles harmonies were influential on many groups like the Mamas and the Papas and the Byrds (which you referenced before). John was under the spell of American R&B groups for their harmonies. Each album were stepping stones as Beatles for Sale and Help! the major transitional albums.

I think you're right, that off-pitch opening wouldn't have been by design BUT it would definitely have been noticed in the recording or mixing stage, so there's a good chance a decision was made to keep it. Happy accidents were absolutely part of their recording process and there's a chance that they identified and enjoyed that menacing effect.

Why don't you mute the video during this first listen, and those who want can watch the video listen the song in their own homes. Ok.. we'll accept the opening is a little off pitch. But the tools of the time mean we're getting full runthru's with no autotune. Plus this material (unlike Michelle, for example) suits a certain roughness, as delivered by one of rock's greatest and most recognisable vocalists. I can't wait for the VR reaction to upcoming albums.

Hi Amy. The rhythm guitar is high-pitched too. If you could hear the intruments isolated, you'd notice that pitch is far from accurate in this one. Nevertheless, it's one of my favourites in this album!. Regards from Argentina.

Though not as modern as US recording technology, there was nothing wrong or deficient in the recording technology at EMI/Parlophone -- the same technology was used to record "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver". Geroge Martin did write in his _All You Need is Ears_ that "Help!" was the first LP intentionally recorded in stereo, and that the mix was a "mess". He tweaked the mix a minor bit for later releases. And singing off-note -- not "off-key" -- was common with "The Beatles". Sure -- straight white music critics often have problems with misplaced "pitch" concerns because they come from Black blues.

I just love Ringo on this one. From the very first 1/6th note pickup to the final crash on the open hi-hat, he sits perfectly in the pocket. And the beatnik way he free-styles on the bongos is something you’d never get from a conventional percussionist.

This reminds me of the Girl Groups like the Ronettes etc. as good as the songs are on this album, if you listen closely you can hear that they should have spent a little more time in some of these recordings. The Fit and Finish of their previous and future works were better. A transition album. Even the studio execs could tell they needed more studio time because the records were everything and the tours, movies and media stuff was no longer needed. Living legends at this point.

A I-III-II-V chord sequence for the verse, you don't hear that every day, it's really very nice, and then they switch to a more normal I-VI-II-V for the refrain part. It is a cool key change too, F#m to D to G and then eventually going from C back to E. A very nice song, and it is still in their early style wheelhouse, the album "Help" having some of that and some more groundbreaking stuff.

I enjoyed this reaction a lot ... again. The song is such a catchy tune and with that key change there that you precisely explained it really hooked the listener. @UCC_YpxjCXNG7a5EPlEHzmSA Read George Martin's _All You Need is Ears_ -- which is an autobiography -- his instrument during his formal music education was oboe; a detailed plain-English history of the evolution of recording technology during his 25 years at EMI/Parlophone before The Beatles" walked into the studio -- and details how the recordings were made. Personnel like him were under strict EMI discipline -- required to wear suits, ties, and white jackets. But he was pretty much ignored as head of the "backwater" label "Parlophone". He had mostly been known for recording "Goon" comedy, and was a maverick. During "The Beatles" first time in the studio, Martin showed them around, explaining stuff. After that brief tour he asked, "Is there anything you don't like? and George Harrison said, "Yeah, I don't like your tie." That made the relationship: "The Beatles" had grown up on and were big fans of "Goon" comedy. (Some of those recordings were actually hits on the British pop charts.) That shows in their humor, including in their recordings. During the first audition, Martin considered a "norm" of the day: he considered whether to make Paul or John the lead singer. He leaned toward Paul -- the conventional voice -- but liked something in John's voice so decided to leave it alone. Martin knew when to "get out of the way". He did play -- typically piano -- on some of their recordings, which was not unusual: producers are to produce hits "for the company," and he'd been at it for 25 years. And early on he "taught" some arranging -- he told Paul to begin the song "Can't Buy Me Love" with the 'hook" instead of going directly into the song. But mostly he figured out how to get the sounds they -- and especially John -- were trying to get. (John's "Being for the Benefit of Mister Kite," on "Sgt. Pepper's," was based on a circus poster. John told Martin, "I want to smell the sawdust on the floor." Martin worked out a sound like a calliope.) And being unlike the standard producer, being something more than that, he learned that it was productive to allow them freedom to explore. Ah, "Strawberry Fields Forever"! Also recommended are John's books _In His Own Write_ and _A Spaniard in the Works_ -- because he was playing with language as a young kid; _Alice in Wonderland_ and the poem "Jabberwocky" were his favorites. So he was very much about the SOUND of language over MEANING. (He wrote a short story about the "eRection" of a "LOUD" mayor.) Liverpool was an "Irish" town; so the humor in "The Beatles" is also the fun they had with language. There's a brief clip of the four of them being interviewed, asked (for the millionth time) why "Beatles". Paul responded, "Well, we could have been called "The Shoes" -- and the four of them began discussing that among themselves. There is also _The Beatles and the Historians: An Analysis of Writings About the Fab Four_ by Erin Torkelson Weber -- there are interviews with her on youtube. Weber distinguishes among the several biographical "narratives" about them. All in all "The Beatles" remain a larger than life phenomenon ever just beyond one's grasp. But always energy, always fun, always _joie de vivre_. And always the bond between John and Paul of the deaths of their mothers when they were both vulnerable teenagers.

Ah, yes! Another song from my childhood (my mother's a great Beatles fan xD ). I am so glad that you picked up on the slightly menacing tone there! I think a lot of listeners just miss it completely. Some might disagree with me on this, but I think it's a little hint of the darker side of John Lennon. Don't get me wrong, I love Lennon and his music, but there's no denying his passion and creativity had a darker aspect. And when it comes to love and passion, it can turn into possessiveness, jealousy, or in this case - the hint of a threat to his competition. You'll definitely see more of it in other songs as well, perhaps most clearly in Run For Your Life. I am very curious to hear what you make f that one. xD

One more thing here. John and George are gone. Over the last few years, I don't know if Paul is getting older and remembers differently or if he's just rewriting Beatles history the way he wants it to be. John and George aren't here to call him out on it. Ringo's not gonna say anything he was the drummer and not involved in the songwriting. There's a book released in 1989 titled "BEATLESONGS" and its very accurate. John is credited as 100% author of "You're Gonna Lose That Girl". I've noticed Paul doing a lot of this over the last few years. Peace ❤

At the beginning, George Martin was the teacher. They were sponges; by this point they were beginning to be Martin's equal. BIG in their development was that Martin knew when to stand back and allow them to explore. He supported and assisted them in getting the sounds they were after. By the time of "Sgt. Pepper's" they were leading Martin. After "Let it Be" -- McCartney's project -- Paul asked Martin to produce what would be "Abbey Road". Martin responded: "Yes -- if you'll let ME produce."

The “immediacy” is probably Emerick’s mic placement. The off intonation in the opening note is probably a case of many intangibles being exactly right in the take that John’s opening pitch glitch was forgiven. If it were Paul, he was such a perfectionist he would have fixed it. That John sang lead indicates it’s more his song (60%!) than Paul’s, so Paul backed off.

I'm concerned that focusing so heavily on The Beatles' early music sequentially, might deprive Amy of experiencing some of the best their finest work. The later albums, which are frankly more musically diverse and interesting, have a much higher ratio of high-standard and unmissable songs. There is a much higher "quality ratio" than the earlier albums For me some of this early stuff, is purely the Beatles banging out commercial pop music, but doing it in a much more intelligent way than their contemporaries.

Interesting that the woman's (sorry, girl's) feelings/preferences are not considered, hmm Not the first or the last time something's out of tune on a Beatles song. Double tracked guitars or vocals sometimes a bit out of tune with the first track, etc. For example, one guitar out of tune with the other at about 1:15 into "I Feel Fine". Wow, lots of ledger lines in the 5th staff at 8:30, not the best notation!

Apologies to fans of this song, but if I was introducing a Rock Virgin to the Beatles, and I was limited to a mere 150 songs, I wouldn’t be wasting one of those spots on a song like this or “I need You”, both of which were, by the standards of 1965 Beatles, pretty lightweight and harmonically unsophisticated. There are much better songs on this album that are clearly going to be passed over on this journey.

I can GUARANTEE U the Beatles can't sing off key, even if they tried. As to singing off pitch? Maybe that was purposeful, considering the meaning behind the lyrics. 😐🤨🤔😑😐 That acapella would NOT HAVE been kept by John and Paul, if they didn't like it.🎯👍 Don't forget, they fairly quickly earned artistic control over the wishes of the studio executives -- like the use of "feedback" in I Feel Fine. 👌 AND NO, it's nothing to do with recording equipment. The audio recording equipment as well as the at home stereophonic reproduction by the early 1960s was FANTASTIC.🎤🎧🎼🏆 This is NOT tinny 1922 radio or 1930 mon-aural, "scratchy" phonographs.👎👎 BUT, the state-of-the-art for LIVE STAGE audio equipment SUCKED !! AND THE BEATLES complained about it.🤫🤔🤐🤨😲😕 I would bet that audio engineers were stimulated, along with profit-oriented studios and promoters, 💰💰 to kick research INTO HIGH GEAR, given the musical and social zeitgeist being influenced by iconic singer/songwriters (and experimenters) like Lennon and McCartney (and George Martin). They're REPUTATION was always a combination of well blended instruments, meaningful lyrics AND OUTSTANDING, UNMISTAKABLE, iconic harmonies. As a result, Beatles fans' EXPECTATIONS trump whatever reality U may be experiencing as a musical academic, getting lost in the weeds, so to speak. ANOTHER WAY to explain: I've interviewed several graphic artists and one of the consistent takeaways is that THEIR idea, THEIR goal, THEIR message(s) don't always match exactly what they discover when interacting with their "fans." IOW: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, not necessarily in the eye of the creator of whatever the painting (or record or novel or poem) in question. We all have a slightly different take on a piece of art, music, poetry, etc. than our fellow patrons -- or the creator of the piece. It's a bummer. BUT THAT'S HOW IT GOES SOMETIMES. That having been said, I can relate to your lyric analysis. THAT'S the kind of analysis U can and should focus on, rather than on their musicianship or their vocal talents. U would have a popular high school or college class if U offered a literature class analyzing song lyrics -- or a music theory class analyzing song lyrics. AND I'd be the first one to sign up for your class, if I were a student again. Analyzing literature as well as poetry was fun in school. So jumping to analyzing song lyrics would be just as much fun, IMO, especially in a class with a fun and inspired teacher like U. JUST ONE THING : In a hypothetical song lyric and poetry analysis class, U DEFINITELY would NOT play only 2 or 3 seconds of sound at a time !! I get the constraints imposed by KZbin. BUT, this type of analysis I find disorienting. I'd suggest doing away with a You Tube channel and go strictly with a Patreon or other venue, where U are FREE to play an entire song, then go back and play big pieces of it, stopping to offer commentary, like I've seen U do before on this channel. just sayin'. 🙂 4/01/2024

I just need to tell you that whom ever is picking out your music for you is selecting many great bands and some not so great. The great bands that I see chosen in your list are being misrepresented by the songs that are selected for you. They have outstanding music. But your music guy who is picking out the songs for you does not know anything about these awesome bands. He or she is selecting all these great band's worst songs for you to review. For example "U2" should first be introduced to yo by songs such as "With or without You", Where the Streets have no names", and "I still Haven't Found what I'm Looking For. That is Just one example. If you keep on reacting to These great rock bands biggest stinkers you will never appreciate real intelligent, very moving rock songs. You are so fun to watch. We just wish your song selector was better. You deserve better...

Expected to hear some comments on the unusual key change after the middle part which ends in F and then just drops one step down to the original key of E!😲 We’re accustomed to raising the key one step up in the last refrain but I can’t think of any other piece where the one step drop appears…?🤔
