🎲 About Caitlyn trading away her gun, what I feel is often understated is how *instantaneously* she does it. Like, the potion seller goes 'trade', and Caitlyn takes a few moments to process what that means, and then the trader begins to pull back the potion, and Caitlyn's immediate reaction is 'oh shit', followed by removing the ammo from the gun, folding it up, and sliding it across the counter. Like yes, very much, that gun is the one thing keeping her safe in Zaun, and it's likely also a family heirloom, and emotionally priceless to her, and in a *heartbeat* she trades it away for Vi's life. And every time I see it it makes my tiny gay heart flutter.
@taylorparis72288 ай бұрын
Cait is such a good person/ cop, I feel like she'd do this for anyone BUT considering Vi just tried to leave her (before Sevika stabbed her), I find it so heartwarming. Even though Vi put Cait in an uncomfortable situation (the brothel) then tried to leave her minutes before, Caitlyn didn't waste a second to trade her only form of protection in an unknown city...for Vi's life. All they've done is tolerate each other at this point, and yet Caitlyn looks so scared at the possibility of Vi dying.

Another thing about Viktor, as far as I remember he gets asked three times in different contexts, one of them being the scene you're highlighting, whether something's safe to interact with and he almost bewildered but calmly goes with some variety of "Of course not". This precious twink just is incapable of inhabiting a perspective where his life is not in danger so he's stopped signalling whether something's dangerous to do to others. He assumes at all times that the people dealing with him can assess these things and are taking the same risks as him, and with his being terminally ill the risk of lethal accidents has been flattened to the point that it's casual until The Scene with Skye. 🎲

2:34:58 YES!!! Mel and Viktor both had the same look, because they both wanted (something from) Jayce. That look may be why a lot of people see Viktor and Jayce as more than friends. Also, did you notice the sheets when Mel woke up alone? Since Fortiche does everything intentionally, I think Jayce felt bad about leaving her and tucked her in tight before going to Viktor. 🥺

I love that scene where Mel has been left alone in the centre of the bed. The animators placed two blue pillows (one each for Jayce and Mel) adjacently but clearly left a third empty space, emphasising Viktor’s absence. Also, the fact that Mel is positioned in the middle of the two empty thirds of the bed suggests how she divides the men, communicating how Jayce’s political/romantic relationship is mutually exclusive to his scientific/platonic(?) one, at least in the way he pursues them with his characteristic all or nothing mentality.

For how erratic, explosive, and unpredictable she can be, he doesn't even move his eyes to follow her movements while she works through this stuff. He's providing a safe space by being extremely predictable for her and she has learned to listen and pay attention when he DOES move. Edit: 🎲

Another thing to add to the Caitlyn flirting in the brothel shot, if you couldn’t already tell from everything you mentioned to prove that Caitlyn was the pursuer in this part; Caitlyn’s half of the room is dark and stacked with exclusively trophies, bows and arrows as compared to the left side consumed in bright lush foliage and trees. Caitlyn still in her Piltover suit, while the other woman is barely covered at all just like a deer in the brush. Her perfect fantasy. Edit: 🎲 Love you bro , hope whatever’s happening health wise will go fine!

I definitely agree!! Even her posture reflects that too. Caitlin is languid, laid back, leaning against the seat, whereas the other woman is alert, perked up, giving Caitlin her full attention (even when she could be taking a more comfortable position). The woman, to me, kind of looks like a deer perking up when it hears a noise, something about the curve of her back... and that draws even more of a parallel to the hunter-prey scenario!

🎲 1:57:00 I always kind of interpreted Vi's surprise/happy look as a combination of not just "Oh, so Caitlyn actually can hold her own!" but also "Oh, so she IS into girls." Vi even asks Cait when they get there a "what'll it be, guys or gals?" and Cait doesn't answer, so hoping Cait was into girls had been on Vi's mind whether she realized it consciously or not. Also 2:27:50 for me the red is just to be eye-catching to ensure that when the light flashes, your eye is drawn to the behind-the-scenes nature of the visual metaphor, but that's not mutually exclusive from your blood hypothesis. 2:45:30 I think it's also significant that the path that leads up to the stage and light has stairs. Something that Viktor, being disabled as he is, would struggle with. He can't just go casually walk up the stairs with ease like Jayce can. Also, best of luck with the brain stuff. Based on what you said, it's most likely you have the same brain stuff as my sister, so take my empathy, even if you don't want it, TAKE IT here ya go.

I have the same interpretation of the SexTech scene, it feels like Jayce had cheated on his dreams of the future with Viktor for the promise of power and station with Mel. I love how they follow that scene too, Mel alone in bed maybe beginning to realize her feeling might not be completely fake, and Jayce stooped with regret as this man he loves barely holds on to life. I like how Arcane portrays their connection as the clearly stronger one, since so often in media romantic love is seen as the end all be all.

2:52:12 I also noticed that Viktor takes up nearly 2/3 of the screen, and Jayce only a tiny fragment, YET Jayce is in focus and Viktor is not, leaning into both the neglect of Viktor in favour of Jayce (like with the backstage parts) and the way Viktor isn't really focused on himself and his own body
@bluefire310 Жыл бұрын
🎲 2:57:00 I got to this point in the video and had a brainwave about intimacy and parallels… With Jayce and Mel, Mel initiated physical intimacy (hands on the lapels/chest/shoulder, first kiss) and Jayce initiated emotional intimacy (head in lap, “nothing feels impossible…”). With Jayce and Viktor, Viktor initiated emotional intimacy (empathizing with Jayce’s struggle, supporting his vision of science/magic as a progressive force) and Jayce initiated physical intimacy (taking back the bracelet, the hand on shoulder at “our Hextech dream”). It’s just interesting, isn’t it so INTERESTING.

I was very aware of that dynamic when I first watched those scenes, it's not even a triangle of longing but there is so much unseen craving for a connection that ultimately never comes to fruition in Arcane's storylines. Unfulfilled desires to the point of desperation is a very strong running theme throughout the entire season for every character in the season, I wonder how much the emotional tone and message of the show will change in the second season.

Ever since they revealed in Bridging the Rift that Jinx’s facial rig could swap between Jinx and Powder modes, I’ve been hoping that someone would do an in-depth analysis of when and how they deploy each mode. As an animation fan but not an animator, I’ve been able to pick out a number of such shots on my own (to me, the biggest tell is Jinx’s cheeks - they’re noticeably fuller and more childlike when she’s in Powder mode), but I hadn’t consciously realized the extent to which they swap back and forth constantly until your breakdown. Just incredible work, and such a brilliant way of harnessing the power of animation to tell Jinx’s story. It’s something that simply wouldn’t be possible in live action, and it’s going to become THE example I go to when discussing the power of animation as a filmic medium.

I also love that you noted that Jayce and Viktor have similar framing in emotional moments and that regardless of if its canon there was absolutely a way they COULD have been together. I think in regards to Mel's section, there are some parts which I think were done in bad faith, for example at 2:25:48, Amara is clearly not wondering whether Mel has Jayce under her control, her look is because she is pissed that Enforcers banged at her door and her trades had to come to a halt, that's why she was speaking to Bolbok in the first place to come to a new arrangement and Mel intervenes to ensure that she is on Jayce's side and he plays along because he realises that in order to make sure he doesn’t make powerful enemies which Mel states prior to this conversation are already going to try and target him and his house, he must work within the system for the time being, I think sometimes in making it seem as if Jayce operates according to the will of those around him takes away his agency, yes sure he can be persuaded here and there but ultimately these are things Jayce wants to do. Also you allude to the idea that Mel sees the Council and people of the upper class as friends but we are already given evidence that is not the case, Mel is usually by herself or with Elora and stays away from them, in fact at her party she makes sure she isn't around them and even rolls her eyes at Amara after raising her glass, she even tells Jayce after he made those deals that it is only a matter of time before those old fools agree with his research and stop trying to limit him, which was the core of the dealings she wanted for Jayce.

@kwabena3667 Жыл бұрын
@@melbell7714 Which makes it frustrating because what is the point of analysing a character if you aren't going to invest in them properly, there are so many instances with Mel in the video where his readings can be proven wrong and if he had just sat with it properly he would have worked it out, I.e.: At 2:37:32 Mel doesn't even wake up in her room, (we know her room's aesthetics from Ep8 and it is less vivid aside from the huge painting and her bed frame is also completely different from the one in this scene) she is in Jayce's home and it is evident with the Kiramman colours and motif on the pillows and the fact that this would be the only logical way for Jayce to get information about Viktor's illness and leave, she also wakes up and looks slightly disoriented, her eyes are shown to assess her environment before realising where she is and turns to find Jayce isn't there. But alas, most people tend to misread or project onto Mel and fail to see the true value and complexity of her character.

@@kwabena3667She isnt that complicated, but yeah, sometimes she is underappreciated. She is a nice twist on a typical seductive mistress character, but what they did incredibly well with her is showing how even she can fall for someone she wasnt planning to (because lets be honest, the first time she banged Jayce wasnt about feelings at all). The facial acting in Arcane is seriously so damn good, though. One of my favorite moments that I don't think I've seen anyone mention is from Episode 6, in the scene where Jayce starts the motion to kick Heimerdinger off the council. When Jayce first calls Heimer out, there's a brief shot of Mel looking at him in shock and shaking her head, like she's asking "what the actual fuck are you doing"? It's such a short moment, but it's one of several that made me realize that she isn't some evil mastermind who is trying to destabilize Piltover, even before we find out her motivations. Also, holy shit, I noticed the Death and the Magician's significance, but I never realized that the Magician has three arms.

I haven't rewatched Arcane since my first viewing but the realization of Viktor's backstory foreshadowing his complete character arc was incredible, I got to say every detail and every analysis finds someone new and different ❤ this is the most pure trait of great art

59:10 This scene is one of the hardest for me because she is embodying the invention that killed her family. I can’t tell if she is trying to own it or be destroyed by it to join them.

Of course Skyrn would promote the video by putting the most gorgeous character from Arcane in the thumbnail ;V For real tho, thank you for this video. It was a great to listen while doing my sewing project! AND I WOULD LOVE ANOTHER ONE ON 3TH ACT!! 🎲

Mel's vision of Noxus is from the harbour, seemingly on the water looking back into it, not from inside Noxus looking out.

🎲 to you, good sir! As always, eloquent and very informative. Chef kiss for the analysis on Powder and Jinx as distinct characters, especially the different facial rigs. It is super interesting to me how Powder embodies vulnerability, fear paralysis, and the past, while Jinx represents agency through violence, anger, and the future of that duo, yet they are both so tragic and heartbreaking in their own way. A split personality created very much in order for her to survive Zaun and Silco. Truly a marvelous show that I will absolutely rewatch soon. Thank you!

I'll be honest, when I first saw the length of this video I didn't think I would make it to the end. But you kept me enraptured the whole way through with your overwhelming passion for this and all the cool details you revealed. Excellent work. 🎲🎲🎲

This genuinely is one of the best series I've ever seen exactly for the same reasons you're pointing out in these analyses. It's the incredible attention to detail and nuance, which is beyond impressive. On some level, it is so lifelike, it almost feels like you're watching actual people. It's believable. Love the content Skyen, please keep doing these! Have you ever done the Avatar animated series? I'd love a deep dive into those.

Incredible analysis! I absolutely adore these videos not just because they're just plain fun to watch, but because I'm also currently trying to learn and study illustration, storyboarding, and composition because I'd love to get into animation sometime in the future and these are really helping me figure out the things I should be learning and keeping an eye out when it comes to this form of art. Really loved this one! 🎲🎲

My reading of Heimerdinger is a little different. It's not that he doesn't notice the corruption and all the other things (I think he notices Jayce's and Mel's relationship when Jayce and Viktor are floating in his lab), but rather that he ignores it on purpose. Either as a strategy to stay as the head of the council (and thus still have some steering power in certain important decisions). Or he just avoids conflicts because of his psychology. Either way, his method actually worked pretty well. I don't think pollitically unsavvy people would get to such a position, let alone stay there for this long. What I find interesting is that all the council members we know of accepted his ignorance until Jayce came along. Which basically means the goodest council man was deposed by another goodest council man. 🎲
