The common paperweight rarely gets much attention in today's digital world. But Paul Stankard's dazzling creations are true works of art - an entire universe encased in glass. Martha Teichner visits the artist at his New Jersey studio.

This man is beyond talented. I dabble in lampworking, and trust me--it is NOT an easy thing to do. His skills are some of the best I have ever seen.

Absolutely Beautiful! and to be honest...I didn't even know 'paperweights' was a thing. Obviously I knew they existed, but I didn't expect them to be displayed in museums and to have such intricate detailed designs within them. I guess I can get rid of this rock now!

I’ve been following Paul Stankard since the 1970s. Habitat Galleries in Royal Oak Michigan has been having their international glass exhibit since then and his work is always included. It’s been my favorite thing to see there, and why I collect paperweights today although not on as a grand scale. It’s nice to see how he does it.

Of course he’s excited. All it takes is a bad break right at the end after you’ve spent weeks and weeks painstakingly making flowers petal by petal, etc. All it takes is 1 mistake and then you have to start all over again

@jkevr2021
@jkevr2021 3 жыл бұрын
I’m assuming the flowers and bees are made of borosilicate... which is a different type of glass so thereby withstanding the temperature of the soft glass encasing them. In short Salman, it’s two different types of glass...and in turn working temperatures and melting points for each

fyi, an ugly paperweight when holding down a stack of $100 notes becomes a beautiful paperweight, a beautiful paperweight when holding down a stack of credit card bills becomes a stressful object, and a paperweight hung on the wall is a useless symbol.
