Nice tutorial! I just want to remark that in most of the modern examples that you gave like Spelunky and Donkey Kong it's actually the player + camera that is moving instead of every background object. Moving the background was done in older games like Super Mario Bros mainly because of technical limitations and today it's mainly used in endless runners where the background objects are being generated while playing.

Hello there, i hope you are doing great. I would like to know how did you apply colliders for a non tile based game, because i saw your level was designed using Adobe Illustrator. I want to build a beat'em up game using this aspect where i can arbitrarily place obstacles at any places no matter what their size might be. I know using tiled editor might be the best option, but i only find random images that i like, but they are in different dimensions, not in a tileset like. Thank you in advanced.

@ChrisCourses3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jees, realistically, probably not completely done for another 2-3 months. I typically release course content as I go rather than wait til the whole thing is complete though, so I should have some of it up and running within the next couple of weeks. Know the wait sucks, but I'm working on obtaining an editor so I can release content more frequently. Hopefully things go quicker in the future!

@solomonjenkins95053 жыл бұрын
so you make the backgrounds in illustrator, but how do you know when mario is touching the platform? Or are the platform objects all drawn with canvas and thats how you know their location?
@ChrisCourses3 жыл бұрын
So all of the canvas rectangle platforms I used before, I simply replaced their fillRect function with drawImage. If your collision detection code is written correctly, that's all you have to do and the illustrator objects will function as platforms just as the canvas rectangles did 👍

Is a game level a single big graphic file or its made up of multiple level maps? I am making a cave level and it's huge and goes way beyond the dimension of 1920x1080. Thanks
@ChrisCourses3 жыл бұрын
One big graphic on one level that's about 10000x1080 pixels. I separated all the assets as needed and imported them into my game using precise positioning if that helps give some background
@bjmgraphics6173 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisCourses Thanks for the answer. My first level is inside a cave and has a small upper room and two levels with the bottom level reach to the first boss chamber. I'm thinking of increasing the size of the art board as needed. I'm thinking I should make all my assets including level tiles before making the level. Should I consider making the entire level up with tiles or should I draw out the walk areas? I seen people freehand draw their walk areas and some repeatedly layout block by block. What are the pros and cons to each method?

@@ChrisCourses Don't forget to thank me when this video reaches a million vies ;) Jokes aside you should really think about what people search for in order to find these types of videos. Adding in the code language and making connections to popular titles make it so people who aren't subscribed can find your videos. When people see a dev journey they think about some amateur learning to code, which you are not. Also, there's thousands of how to code a platformer videos out there that focus on Mario. I'd suggest taking a popular indie title like Hollow knight, Celeste, Super meat boy or Shovel knight. Indie game fans are often hard core and will watch any video about lore or game creation/modding, that goes especially for Hollow knight.

You should really try Unity. If you don't already know C#, it would be really easy to learn since it's like Javascript. Unity makes it so much easier to make games, I think you would do really well with that game engine!
