Here’s a brief history of the name: The game was originally created in England and was called football because you played the ball with your foot. In the early stages of the game some people, in the city of Rugby, got frustrated trying to play the ball with their foot, so they picked it up and run with it. This version of the sport became known as Rugby football. To bring some order into the situation, the players organized a governing body called The Football Association and laid down some ground rules for playing the game as it was intended, such as no hands can be used. This became known as Association Football, later abbreviated through slang to Assoc football and abbreviated still to Soc football and slanged even further to Soccer. Meanwhile in Rugby, the “Rugby football” version of football started taking shape as a separate sport. Players chose to cut off the “football” part of the name and just called it rugby to differentiate it from football. In contrast, the English immigrants who exported Rugby football to the USA, chose to cut off the “rugby” part of the name (to forget the old world perhaps?) and just called it football. The game slowly transformed into the American football we know today, but it is based on rugby and derived from it. So that’s why Americans call their sport “football” - it’s a leftover name from the immigrating English. So all those who say “it’s called football, not soccer”, they’re technically correct, because the name “football” came before “soccer”; but not entirely correct…. Because it was the English themselves who gave it its slang name - Soccer. So to all you Englishmen who complain about Americans calling football soccer and calling a sport where they play with their hands football, don’t complain too loudly…because you’re to blame for both! 😂

Perfect comment 👍 I’ll add a few more points I feel you missed To get a little more technical, the sport football can be sourced back to china nearly 2500 years ago. They played a game called cuju which translates to “kickball” or to “kick the ball with the foot”. It was modernised as what we kinda know now in the early 1800’s in Holland and the oldest official club being Sheffield football club in England. But yeah every other point you mentioned was spot on. Both about rugby and the constant name changes.

@@cjr2131 what I do have an issue with is Americans thinking the name is Futbol. That’s just a Spanish-ization of football. Imagine if basketball was exported to France, where they called it “basquette” to make it sound more French and from there it spread to England. Now imagine an Englishman going to the U.S. and saying the sport is called “basquette”. Why use the French word, when it was invented in America and given an English name? Similarly, why use the Spanish name Futbol, when you are an English-speaking nation and it has an original English name? I would prefer that it was called Soccer than Futbol - unless you’re Spanish, of course.

As much as I respect the comments in this post, most of them are probably inaccurate. It is very likely not called football because it is played with your feet, that is a common misonception and there is no actual concensus on why this is but there are a few theories (more on this later). Around the middle of the 19th century there were numerous codes of football being played. Sheffield Football, Association Football, Rugby Football, Gaelic Football being some of the more prominent ones amongst many. Ironically a majority of football codes used their hands around this time and this was also very common amongst a majority of other proto football codes in the years before this. Association Football was called Soccer as a shortened way of referring to that specific code and the same sort of thing happened with Rugby Football (Rugga). Soccer was used extensively even when Association Football became the dominant code eventually being phased out (but partially used in the UK) and replaced with just 'Football'. The United States, Ireland, Canada and Australia (and many others)for example had already developed their own dominant codes of football (mostly based on early Rugby Football rules) and this to them became known simply as 'Football' this is why those countries almost always exclusively use the word 'Soccer' instead of 'Football' to refer to Association Football, because by the time the word soccer had been phased out across the rest of the world, they already had applied the word 'Football' to something else in their countries. Now, there is a growing theory that Football derives it's name from the fact that it is played on foot, possibly as a direct reference to the fact that many ball games similiar this during the middle ages had the prominent players on horse back. The prevailing thought is that due to most versions of football at the time being primarily played with the hands, the name cannot possibly be derived from the usage of a foot to kick the ball.

Is it real football? in American football, you pick the ball up with your hands, you throw it to someone with your hands, they catch it in their hands, and carry it while running to the endzone. The rest of the worlds laughs at the USA calling it "football", it's closer to "throw and carry ball". The USA calls it soccer, the rest of the world, and i mean THE rest of the world, calls it football. You should get the USA national team to a better level, and get them more involved, you would be late to the party, but that's when all the best guests arrive :)

It’s even greater when you know the context. Lots of these goals were World Cup final winning goals, or champions league final winning goals. The goal at 5:20 was into the last minute, this team was Manchester city. It was 2-2 and Manchester city needed a goal, their main rivals ( Manchester United ) won their game seconds before this, and in point their were basically champions of the league, unless Manchester city scored a goal. And in this very last minute of injury time that guy ( aguero) scored the winning goal, and Manchester city won the league for the first time, instead of their main rivals. That was huge

Over here we call Football - American Football, and Soccer - Football, Rugby is still Rugby. I have no issues when someone calls our European football - soccer, both terms orginated from Europe and it's just a way to distinguish one sport from the other. I don't agree with people saying that one is the TRUE football while the other isn't considering it's ALL football by origins.

In most places we call your sport AMERICAN FOOTBALL 🏈 and the original one FOOTBALL ⚽. As you're from the US just call ⚽ this EUROPEAN FOOTBALL or ENGLISH FOOTBALL (English bc it became a professional sport in England first, from what I understand, right around the time rubgy was invented which is similar to AMERICAN FOOTBALL). People in most places around the world have issues with the term "soccer" bc it was just an abbreviation for some kind of Football Association not the whole sport. To not get confused, call yours 🏈 AMERICAN FOOTBALL and ours ⚽ EUROPEAN/ENGLISH FOOTBALL. That way you can differentiate between the two without getting confused and using a term that is tabu for a lot of ENGLISH FOOTBALL ⚽ fans.
