Vegeta's obsession with surpassing Goku is the only reason he's spent so much of the series as the #2 fighter. He acknowledges this at the end of Z. His sole reason for starting a family with Bulma was simply bc he figured thats what was behind Goku's progression as a fighter. Of course he grew to truly love his family, but it wasn't the case initially. Also, I disagree with saying his sacrifice was for nothing. Vegeta asked Piccolo if he'd go to heaven and meet Kakarot, to which Piccolo replies "No". He makes that sacrifice in spite of knowing his fate in the afterlife, which further showcases his resolve and mental fortitude when the odds are against him. He risked being erased from reality entirely by fighting Kid Buu after his death. All of this played a big part in him being brought back to life. Now, completely changed, he is a legitimate rival to Goku.

He's arguably more human than Goku, at this point, at least where doing the actual *work* of maintaining his relationships is concerned. In Super, we see Goku try to get Vegeta to blow off the birth of his own child to train (with Whis, no less), and Vegeta is just... quietly appalled. He can't believe Goku can't see why that's not an option. Personally, I think Vegeta is forever second best because he obviously has some sort of ancestral Saiyan prejudice against non-ki-based fighting techniques. Which is to say: he never uses martial arts. For a character who's regularly acknowledged as a genius of unarmed combat, his striking is *hilariously* unoptimized -- giant roundhouse blows, square punches... The fingers-laced axe handle spike is a particularly egregious favorite of his. It's like someone once told him that "martial arts are a tool whereby the weak can defeat the strong," and that offended him personally to the point of being put off the entire concept.

That's not the same tho. Zoro doesn't want to surpass Luffy and be captain. Not because he isn't strong enough, but because his goals are simply different than Luffy's. He doesn't want to surpass Luffy in any way. He respects his captain and wants to fulfill his role in the crew as his first mate. If anything, you could say he's the second strongest to Mihawk, but that's more a goal to his dream than just envy towards Mihawk or a competition for the title of 'the strongest swordsman'

I love Vegeta and I love how he's finally gained a unique form to distance himself from being a Goku follower. That's what I've always wanted for him tbh. I mostly enjoy the dynamic between the two after Vegeta switching sides back on Namek. I loved him as a villain and it was even better when he became a hero but his vibe was still the same. Turning his villainous personality and behavior into that of a hero while his character still feels like himself is masterful work by Toriyama RIP to one of the greatest to ever create a story.

Same, for example Gyokko, I could imagine he's backstory being something like when he is human, he is obsessed with creating perfect art (as shown in the anime) with the perfect materials(explain why he wants a harshia in his "creation") and he believes in abstract from the abstract human art to Gyokko's design. But because of whatever reason (probably just passion) he loves to create art using vast. He loves the natural of sea and marine animal (explains his technique). But then he either become a demon to have infinite time in creating time or it's just another doma scenario(where he just meet muzan and muzan just makes him a demon.) He have a high ego (just like in the show). What was shown in the show? (NOTHING) AND WHY IS MORE BACKSTORY FOR LOWER RANK FIVE THEN THE DEMON KING.
