The Beauty of Tomb Raider 2

On to The Beauty of Tomb Raider 2 - with levels spanning Italy to China that some treasure even more than the original game in the series. This video was inspired by the KZbin channel Flurdeh, who creates videos that show off stunning gaming environments. Everyone talks about their memories of TR and how kickass Lara was, and how much fun they had exploring, so I thought I'd shine a spotlight on the environments themselves.
It's intended as a chillout video, something very calm and relaxed. So sit back and let those (now HD) waves of nostalgia wash over you.

Beautiful job, Chris! It's remarkable how good the lighting, particle effects, and water look in OpenLara. It makes me hope we eventually get proper HD remakes of the classic games in the series, like the recent Crash Bandicoot remakes. Tibet has always been my favorite area of TR2. I love playing all four of those levels.

I'd absolutely love proper HD remakes. Full on block for block remakes with added areas. It's still a shame nothing ever became of Core's Anniversary Edition, since that's exactly what it looked like.

Yes! That would be fantastic. I would pay good money for remakes of TR2-5. I know there are some fans who are hopeful that a TR2 remake set in the reboot universe could happen because of the Temple of Xian reference in the Blood Ties DLC from Rise, but I'm not so sure.

The shadows and water caustics are from openlara. But I suspect some of the lighting effects were added with after effects.

Unluckily at that time light effects didn't exist but this is absolutely my Tomb Raider.

They did, but they were monochromatic lights and mostly baked-in to the map. Some of them had pulsing effects too to simulate light refraction from water/lava. They also make use of very simple dynamic point lights - - you can see them in action when you light a flare, fire a weapon, or an enemy fires a weapon. They started experimenting with colored lights when they upgraded the engine in Tomb Raider III though.

@@MrLeoTubeification That's what I'm hoping to see come out of OpenLara, but if that happens it'll be a very long time, since their main focus is ironing out Tomb Raider I right now. Tomb Raider II RUNS in OpenLara, but none of the enemies or triggers or anything work yet.

The floating particles and the light really makes the places so pretty and dreamy... Gotta love the part from 3:05, the music and the camera movement work so well together!

so nostalgic and my favourite level in TR2 is Barkang Monastery or Temple of Xian

I love those levels so much! I replayed all of Barkang when making this because I really wanted to get a shot inside the Seraph chamber - unfortunately a bug stopped the prayed wheels from working, so I couldn't get in there! And Temple of Xian is one of my favourite TR levels ever.

My favorite game too. Its mood is so dramatic and mysterious. It's so over the top like a globe trotting action movie where she's part James Bond, part Indiana Jones, part femme fatale. I think it does the best job with impactful musical stingers in the whole series and I love how challenging it is.
