I thought it spoiled "Paying the price of love"....TOO MUCH falsetto!
@susieq98013 жыл бұрын
@@juanita6479 - 100%. What's with the whisper? Barry's natural voice was superb, so use it. The whisper was artifice. The falsetto eventually almost destroyed their career due to overuse and they never really recovered as a group after 1979 except as songwriters. They couldn't get on the radio for love or money including solo efforts. That was sad because they produced so many terrific songs in the 80's and 90's, even the early 2000's.
@TheBrownlj2 жыл бұрын
@@susieq9801 it was fine. You will find it was mainly in the USA that they had trouble with airplay etc. Still did well in Australia, UK and Europe. These countries always knew that the Bee Gees were more than disco and existed before and after Saturday Night Fever. There was nothing wrong with the falsetto. You actually do not know what you are talking about.
@susieq98012 жыл бұрын
@@TheBrownlj - WELL!!!! Thank god you straightened me out, LOL. 🙄 What would have become of me without your sage advice? As a 72 year old fan since 1967, I suppose I know nothing, so it is nice to be reeducated. BTW, I'm not an American either. For the most part, the group didn't do nearly as well in the UK either after SNF. All you have to do is look at the chart placements. Even in the mid 70's the UK wasn't as kind to their singles compared to the late 60's. That's not to say the music wasn't good because it was. In the late 60's they were touted as successors to The Beatles. Of course there were many die-hards who stuck by them but their profile went WAY down after the SNF backlash. In the first half of the 80's many of the hits with their songs were by other people. "You win again" reached #1 in the UK in Sept of '87 but "One" only reached 71, not stunning. In the 90's in the UK "For whom the Bell Tolls" reached # 4, "Secret Love" and "Alone" reached #5. The LP's "Still Waters" and "This is where I came in" did fairly well. That was not justified and sure can't compare with what their terrific songs deserved so, yes, the UK wasn't all that nice to them either although better than the US. They deserved so much better. They always did better in Europe and Australia. As for the falsetto, that's just MY choice. I don't like it. It was OK in a couple of songs but it was flogged to death and I know many people who dropped the group strictly based on that, so I'm not alone. I know people who called them mechanical mice in that era and a lot of people made fun of it. That is undeniable. Sorry, but you can't tell me what I do or don't like any more than I can tell you. You can try I suppose but that won't change my personal tastes. 😏 It also doesn't mean I "don't know what I'm talking about". Saying that makes you sound just a "wee" bit arrogant.... actually a lot arrogant. I know the Americans were idiots for their blackballing of the Bee Gees. I can't help that but there WERE reasons, oversaturation, overused falsetto and plain old jealousy. Please be a little more tactful when insulting other people for their opinions and tastes. No need to be rude. CHEERS!
@TheBrownlj2 жыл бұрын
@@susieq9801 haha so its ok for you to be rude but not anyone else. Fact Bee Gees faced backlash and were ostracised by radio stations predominantly in the USA, ok will add UK to that too because of the disco label, not the falsetto. How Deep is Your Love was sung like 98% in Barry's usual voice but because it was on the Saturday Night Fever Album it got caught up in the hype and was considered disco when it wasnt. Thats cool you can dislike the falsetto, never said you had to. Just sayin it was Fever that stopped the airplay not the falsetto. By the way Im an Aussie. Guess we appreciate them more here. Maybe because they started as the Bee Gees here and are part of our small music industry history. Yes will always be Aussies to us. We love them falsetto or not, pre, during and post Fever.

Alan Kendall is the guitarist in the white shirt and black vest. Fall of 1992 I was 18 and had just began school at the Atlanta Insitute of Music. This older guy sat next to me and would play Staying Alive and other Bee Gees songs on guitar before class to warm up. I was very familiar with a lot of their material since my mom spun the Saturday Night Fever record constantly when I was about 5 or 6. But at 18 I was into heavy metal and was too cool to let anyone know I secretly loved the Bee Gees. By December 1992 our class was considerably smaller - about 10 of us attending regularly - but we had all dropped our guards and were on friendly terms. Alan informed us that he was in the Bee Gees and had been since the 70's and was attending school to brush up on his chops before the reunion world tour. I didn't really believe him at the time and figured he was a guitar tech or roadie exaggerating his position in the band, this was pre-internet days, but a friend and I bought the SNF CD and sure enough Alan Kendall was on the liner notes credited for writing all the songs. The very next class we picked his brain asking for all the rock and roll stories and boy were we gifted many. I was getting to hang out with rock and roll royalty and loving every minute. He even borrowed my guitar for a couple songs in rock class one night after he had broken a string before his turn on stage. I was going to class at night then hitting up Bennigan's and Waffle House late night with one of the Bee Gees (I know I know not exactly rock and roll but it was rock and roll to me). And my mom begged for autographs whenever I called home to boast. But it wasn't for long - a short time later Alan wasn't in class anymore since he had left to join the world tour. The remaining classmates and I had a viewing party for this Tonight Show episode and we were ecstatic to see our friend Alan on stage. I never became a rock star like I had dreamed but I got to live vicariously through Alan's stories and had so much fun imagining how one day that could be me. And that ended up being good enough for me after all. Keep on rocking Alan wherever you are!! I will always love the Bee Gees and remember the 90s fondly for allowing me to be a rock star in my mind.

No the only interview was what you saw...total lack of class from Leno who didn't even introduce the 2nd song by its title. I noticed that in the Late 80's and early 90's there was absolutely no respect towards Bee Gees music in the USA exception made of the single One,whereas in Europe and the rest of the world they were selling albums by millions. The 1987 ESP album featuring the single You win again was a monster seller all over the world except the USA where the aforementioned single charted 76th in the billboard 100. You win again was a monster hit all over the world The One album was the only album producing a Bee Gees hit in the states with title track reaching number 7. The High civilization album didn't even chart in the States and the Size album stalled at number 154 for a week. Still waters in 1997 finally saw the Gibb brothers again being accepted by the so called US radio stations and critics.
