First day I logged in, In 2007 i ran into three players. One was high level. He invited me into his LS and helped me level, escorted me to juno and also helped get my sub job and AF gear. The community was brilliant. My favourite way to level was BLM burn parties. I'm coming back to FF 11 on steam deck.

Yeah, PlayOnline is definitely a time capsule for better and for worse, but really I think the whole launcher is part of the game's charm now. It's definitely a pain but I think if it was gone I would miss it. Still, it's a battle we all face so we can all share our horror stories about it, and that brings us all together.

Nice video, man! I recently made a new character in FFXI and it's great to be back. At first, I was a bit hesitant because of all the comments about how the game is no longer the same, but now I regret not coming back earlier. I'm having a blast exploring and unlocking stuff. What I loved about the game back then is, for the most part, intact. And the community still seems like I remember it. Now I know what I'm gonna do everyday for years, and that is enjoy FFXI.

Personally, I would consider some of those quad expenditures. 1. Pay for the game. 2. Pay for the subscription. 3. Pay for the cosmetic. 4. Pay with your personal time that you invest into said game to get your 'value' out of said cosmetic. Considering you're correct about the impermanence of it it, we're well on our way for a five layer dip.

I agree. My son and I have been playing since the NA PS2 release when I bought two PS2 systems with FFXI, keyboards, mice, networking, etc. We joined an LS on Caitsith named Brotherhood. Sober, I've found myself to be a huge fan of what you do here despite my own quiet nature towards interacting on it, irrelevant stuff- just wanted to say I love how this video, as others have, wasted no time in diving into meaningful considerations. Granted, it's because you're talking on a game that's important to you and referring to the previous vids on it, but I just wanted to say I enjoyed those starting seconds for emphasizing something so specific to, well I was gonna say art and "yes!" that, but moreso life overall. Mostly wanted to say in the least concise or straight forward way, the starting seconds reminded me of the important message of an ebbits comic often simplified to "I can't be an auteur of that" or "Interpreting is generative". The comic got popular on tumblr and the author responded to the thorough explanation a user gave the piece, but it put words to something many of us have experienced and your videos touch on regularly and rather specifically in the case for FF11. Beyond the 1s and 0s, the design ideas, the balance, the gameplay, whatever- the experience you have in itself adds value and is a creative endeavor. Hell the comic even namedropped MMOs as an example of that. But hearing you speak on FF11 and all it means to you, specifically, beyond what it 'is'- is a peak into that interpretation that you display very well, man. And I'm well aware from my own attempts to explain my experiences in games that no matter how close you get, or the breadth of how much you share and say, it just never feels exactly like you gave the clearest view of that experience because it's kinda impossible. It's personal to one individual, it's filtered through a lens when shared EVEN at the same time it's created, and it's unique and locked in time- but man can be it be fun to attempt to explain and hell if it ain't an absolute treat to catch glimpses at when someone puts forth the effort to share it as you have. If I were to needlessly fumble my words and intended meaning of what I want to say after listening to less than a full minute of this video I'd say you're videos themselves are a creative outlet that often times exist to attempt to present what you created when experiencing those games. Or you talk about the experiences of those that made it and those are fucking incredible topics that you tackle too, lol. Uh, I'll actually watch the damned video now instead of pausing to rant off shit as some sort of backlog of thoughts since I don't usually comment. Been trying to change that (as well as dabbling in multiple comments because algorithms are weird and I want to support a touch better on that bullshit front).

You mention you play with steam controller. Is there some magic trick to get it to work? I’ve tried for hours to get it to work through windower on steam with no luck. Admin all on it seems to default to my basic desktop config after launching. If I change my desktop config to the one I want to play with it no longer recognizes it’s controller specific inputs.

There are two ways to do it. The first option requires you to run FFXI from Steam, which is harder than it looks because initially steam only really looks for the POL launcher, not the game itself (so it stops detecting it as soon as you get into the game.) You have to make sure that you get the actual game is detected. After that, you can use Steam's 'Big Screen' mode to change the detection of the keyboard inputs or emulate a direct input. A much easier (though paid) way is to use ReWASD, which is a paid controller remapper from Daemon Tools. It has steam controller support and allows you to not only adjust the steam controller as a native xbox contoller (meaning no configuring required), but I also use it for really easy macros. This is the method I go with just because it gives me a lot of customization.

@@SoberDwarf Thanks for reply. I think I broke it’s functionality somehow. Had it working for a bit launching windower through steam but since then no luck. May of broke when I brought up steam overlay in game to remap a control on my config. After troubleshooting for a few days and trying a problem called GLOSC the game now no longer recognizes any controller to use in game while steam controller is plugged in. Think I might just stick to the regular Xbox controller for fear of messing it up more. It’s a shame cause I found a really good steam config for the game. Convinced the author to post it on steam community configs. If you want to check it out it can be found under windower configs after adding the program to steam. Think it’s called Yam’s config.

If you are a new player deciding on what server to play on, and your intention is to experience the story and dabble in the endgame, I do not suggest Asura. It is riddled with bots and RMT. Bahamut is the way to go for English speakers. If you are the type of player who is willing to push past hurdles and want to get into the endgame quickly, Asura should work fine for you.

FFXI rewards some prior research, I I figure this video helps, but before that, a bit of a wiki trawl to look into stuff like inventory options, permanent key items, Records of Eminence and Rhapsodies of Vana'diel can help a lot. Particularly in FFXIclopedia, pages for zones usually mention the quests and missions they're involved in, so you can try and make the most of each trip, even if travel is a lot faster (travel options also being quite worth looking into).

It's interesting to me in part because of what game I'm playing now (another square entry) but I spent most of my youth and teenage years thinking Square just abandoned the ideas that didn't work out the first time like FF2's leveling but recently it's been coming to my attention that no- they saw that failure, gave it some time to collect itself, and tried again- often to much better results.

Yeah, there isn't any exp boost for a killing blow, so even if you only hit the enemy once, you get full exp. If you notice any variation in what you get, it's mostly due to the slight level variation between enemies and the level difference.

I couldn't get past the screen after you put in you PO ID #. It asks for my PO password and my SE password, but it fails shortly after that. I can't get past it. I know what the passwords are I use them all the time so it's not that. I'm not sure really what happened there. I know I changed both passwords before I started the PO Viewer. Did that break it?

Few things it could be. I had an issue where it didn't save my SE password in settings correctly and kept loading up an old one I had used. I ended up having to delete the login.bin in the usr folder of PlayOnline and letting it generate a new one, then added the correct information.

I mean, you're asking someone who has spent well over 400 actual days of their life in the game world so I can't say I'm unbiased. But trying to be honest about it; It's difficult to really commit time too since it requires so much investment in time and energy from the player, it doesn't respect your time like other games, even if the QoL makes it a lot better than it was. But there is a lot to get out of it too, even if you don't stick around. The stories have really good moments. The gameplay is fun in a way that's different from every modern MMO. It's slow-paced but feels more like a world in that regard. Honestly, if you can convince one other person to hop in with you, then it's definitely worth it. Solo? It can be but you'd have to ask yourself more what you're wanting out of the experience.

I. Alright, so I've dealt with a ton of arbitrary oldschool messes in my time but this sign up procedure just shocked my system to its core. I keep thinking "Yeah, that's oldschool online stuff... wait... still going... another layer of obfuscation? ANOTHER login? Yeah, that's my typical pronunciation, (which I fall back into later in the video). In Japanese (or at least my limited knowledge of it), it's ヴァナ・ディール, pronounced "Vua-na Dee-ru" so that would make it likely "Van-na Deal" or less commonly "Van-na Dee-ale", and less likely it's "Van-na Day-el" though I've heard it every way coming from official sources (though entirely possible they could be mistaken, most of these instances were english speaking event coordinators in America which is where I also got "Bass-tock" from instead of "Bass-took") Genuinely, the only reason I went with the initial pronunciation was just so I could make a bad pun halfway in.

While I'd be the last to complain on ANY direction shift you sought out, I can appreciate the sentiment on not peddling nostalgia and instead making the videos more approachable without a comprehensive 'literacy' test for that specific game. To be honest though? I doubt it's fair to say waxing poetic on your experiences is the same as peddling nostalgia if you put the legwork into presenting it, mostly because, again, no one experiences things the same way so while parts of your tale could be nostalgic to others who had similar takes on events in the game, your own take holds more than enough value to open up who can enjoy that content a bit. But I get the worry, and how some stories might be a bit closer to nostalgia bait than 'exclusively personal interpretation' or what have you. Just woefully attempting to alleviate your worry on creating a vid that's too exclusive to those that 'get it' because they were there. It's a good guide, and helpful, but way too overblown. Succinctness is lacking. Nearly 10 minutes to explain the POL launcher is silly.

They need to make a legacy server. They would have many more subscribers if they did. Myself included.

I've been pushing for this for awhile. Though from what I've heard, SquareEnix hasn't really kept old server versions and the current dev team is probably too understaffed to be able to get one going from old install files (which is what the current private servers are doing.)

I feel the same. I played on a private server that claimed to be classic for awhile, but ultimately it just wasn't the same. I'm done with FFXI unless an official classic server becomes reality.

Nah no thanks, I don't want to go back to camp NMs which only spawn once per day and are camped by bots or kill the same mobs for hours just to get a few exp. I did it for years and tbh the game is better now, but it's hard to get back to the "modern" version with all the nostalgic, but the worst part is that all old friends quit (they are older now and changed their life) so it's not the same anymore.

I don't even know what half of those npc's do... I tried to return to retail in 2013. I bought Seekers Edition, played 13 hours, then uninstalled. Was definitely not the game I thought I was buying after being gone for so long. It was like a completely different game that just used FFXI character models. I think adding the fast travel options was the nail in the coffin for me. Gathering together at a crag and hitting the road together on chocobo's with your pt was always part of the fun. Making that obsolete was a bad move. And the fact that you literally don't have to talk to a single person, kinda defeats my pov of what an mmo is. Thank Altana for community servers.

I totally agree with you, though the issue wasn't so much the dev team made it obsolete as much as it was that community wasn't there to have that experience. XI just simply wasn't seeing numbers of new players to where you might have only seen 2-3 people looking for a party in Valkurm at a time on lesser populated servers, and that wall was causing a lot of people to leave because it was a massive content gate. Simply put, that experience was gone regardless if FFXI made those changes or not. Honestly, while I really hate not having that experience again, it was more the dev team working towards solutions to get people into the end game quicker so they could start experiencing content with other players again, like with JP parties or Omen, and all things considered with the small budget they have, they did a good job at keeping as close to the original experience as they could while making it accessible for new/returning players to get into the game.

@@SoberDwarf Yea, I kinda noticed on one of those servers that ya highlighted that the pop was just over 700, so I guess they needed to do something about that. A few of the community servers have bigger pops than that. Now with Project Topaz I expect to see those numbers go higher.
