Still sad I never got a true ending to my first hunter character. Gillian Slayter was an army ranger who was honorably discharged after surviving an enemy massacre. Or at least that's how the record showed it. His commanding officer led his squadron into a trap and revealed he was the leader of the cult they were sent to chase down. He needed five killers to complete a ritual to bring a demon into this world but the ritual didn't work because Gillian had never actually killed the kid he said he had. A year prior a child carrying a bomb had gotten past their defenses and he ignored the orders to shoot on sight anyone that crossed the barrier because the child reminded him of his daughter at home and because of that the bomb went off and his best friend lost his leg. He shamefully put a bullet into the body to hide his crime. When the demon ritual failed the demon was only half brought into this plane as it ripped into his chest before dissapting, leaving a terrible scar and part of it's claw embedded into his heart. He shot his commander in the ensuing carnage brought about by the failure and they just said it was friendly fire brought about by confusion. They deemed him insane and with heavy ptsd due to the incident, and as far as the PTSD was concerned they were not wrong. He became obsessed with the occult to the point where his walls were covered in symbols and scattered books filled his floors, and he woke up in cold sweats nearly strangling his wife. She was only willing to put up with this craziness until their daughter walked in to see it and then she left him. Alone and cold on the streets he walked homeless until a car stopped in front of him. It was his friend who lost his leg offering him to stay at his house and work at his bar. Despite the guilt he had to accept as he hated himself for it. Eventually he got into drugs and prostitutes until one of the prostitutes got possessed by the same demon he saw in Iraq and he killed her. The next week when he was expecting the police to arrest him at any time, task force knocked on his door and told him everything he had ever seen was true and they were going to blackmail him into hunting for them. I ended up having a very interesting story with his family and friend after that that never got resolved

Thank you for talking about Hunter The Vigil, it feels like it always gets overshadowed by the other WoD gamelines, but there is just something magical about playing a human in a world of such evil and darkness, and fighting against forces that are above humans, showing them just why mankind is the most dangerous game.

Whenever I tried to pick a supernatural and a faction, I always went for the more modern ones like Carthians, Iron Masters, and Free Council. Then I figured what I really liked was Hunter, and something like Valkyrie or Vascu. I guess I just like humans too much.

One of my favs - Constantine (although you need to leave out the the Keanu Reeves flick, it went too over the top for my taste). He would be a tier three character (or maybe just a five in Contacts). His friends that help him keep dying & no matter what he does , the dark is going to take him for past mistakes - but he keeps fighting... VERY Hunter! There was a 2016 series by the name & about 300 comic issues, so a lot of material too.

I love Hunter the Vigil i have not gotten to play in it sadly due to my group but i did get to run a game and it was thrilling to do so. My group got very into it and it was a lot of fun messing with varies things. My personal game i made up a twisted Abomination but also had a Slasher group who was seeking out and killing hunters for an unknown reason though it ended just as my group was going to have the chance to meet one of the members of that Slasher group.

Great video! I'm currently the storyteller for a first time group of WoD players. Hunter: The Vigil really is the best game to kick off a bunch of new players because like their characters they know next to nothing and it's the pursuit of knowledge that seems to be driving them. Used this video as a way to sell them on the concept. We're well into our first Vigil campaign and looks like we'll be starting a Vampire: The Masquerade one as well. They'll be tackling their first serious hunt next session! Keep pumping out the WoD stuff, you rock!

I think a really good example of a hunter is Carl Kolchack from the Nightstalker series (the chad 70's version, not the recent one). He isn't super strong or fearless. He's just a reporter that tries to bring these horrors into the light. Even when he does beat a monster, it's only by his wits. The best part is that nobody believes him. I think that makes him a very real character

The thematic difference between the Vigil and the Reckoning, based on what you've said here is that the former are fighting a necessary but hopeless struggle because they _have_ no power. Their fighting back against the darkness is a war of rats in a house full of people. They can score some victories if they're cautious and smart, but in the end they are going to lose. It, in a way, is what would have been going on before the Reckoning kicked off. The latter is fighting a necessary struggle that can seem hopeless, but isn't because the Hunters _have_ power. They don't know that power, or who gave it to them or why, but they can stand up to the horrors and defeat them, if only on the small scale. Their fighting back against the darkness is a war of children against adults. If they can make it, if they can group together, learn enough and survive long enough, it's plausible they can win it, or at least their great grandchildren can. It's funny, how well Vigil seems to fit as 'this is why Imbuement was needed.' and there's value in both lines. But I'll admit, Vigil is a hard sell to me. Fighting a battle that's brutally lonely and hard is in both, but I can't find it in me to invest much in a dead end. I'll get on board for a long twilight struggle, because win or lose it was a fight with meaning that needs fighting. Vigil's situation strikes me as being a cornered rat, you fight because the only alternative is lay down and die, not because you have any hope of even doing meaningful damage before your death.

No? I'm not sure what exactly your getting at. But no, a hunter in the vigil is not just a bystander. They tend to start as an innocent bystander that's just awakened to the "real" world. But they can and do get to the level of full on global organization hunters.
