Great advice Troy! Your stash looks pretty organized. Who freakin' knows how many rounds you need per weapon, per caliber... but I like the nice round figure of 1000 rounds per long gun & 500 rounds per pistol. It took me a while to get there, but I consider that my "minimum" inventory. When it's time to go shooting I buy what I shoot each trip to the range, never dropping below the minimum inventory level.

These guys around my part of Arkansas are relentless. I have to wake up at 7A.M. if I want .22 ammo cause they buy the entire stock within an hour of it arriving at the store. I call WalMart and other retail stores daily and I always miss the shipment.

I've been involved with firearms for 60 years. 1. Don't use plastic ammo cans for storage. Use metal ammo cans. 2. Use desiccant and a food quality oxygen absorber in each can. 3. Have a firearm for each adult member of the family (pistol and/or rifle), train on how and when to use them. (Question on amount of ammo: How much? You need as much as you need. There is no magic number. One will need what ones needs and even more because running out means end of life) Good video on storage however the plastic ammo cans will fail. Fill a garbage can with water, put some bricks, rocks other weight plus some tissue paper in your plastic can, immerse it in the water and soak it over night. I had plastic ammo boxes and lost a lot of ammunition due to corrosion because they leak. I converted all my storage to metal Military or Military style 50 cal ammo cans and haven't lost a round yet. Been some 30 years now.

I have four firearms (two S&W .223/5.56mm M&P-15 rifles and two Springfield XD 9mm SC pistols - one each for me & the wife) and try to maintain a stockpile about 750 rounds of each caliber. Unlikely to survive a shootout requiring more ammo than that. About 150 rounds of each caliber (not counting what’s already in the firearms) are premium self-defense rounds (Hornady hollow-points). The remainder are budget rounds which can be used for plinking or target practice, and for self-defense if nothing else exists. Its all stored in traditional military-style wooden ammo boxes I built myself. Metal or plastic boxes seal in moisture (which is why metal boxes rust inside and out), while wood breathes and generally dries with age. I cycle through my ammo, so long-term storage really isn’t an issue anyway. I just like wooden ammo boxes.

Yes, their prices are reasonable and the store in Wichita, KS has ALL KINDS of ammo. You wouldn't know a shortage existed looking for ammo there. They had a nice long shelf of various types of .223/5.56 and then another display in the isle with .223/5.56 and 7.62x39.

The best way to stockpile ammo, is to STOP buying ammo! Buy a reloading press, and stock components. You will get 3-5 times the rounds per $, and they will be of higher quality. That, and you will have much more firearm knowledge.

Thanks MrFisher, well for prepping of coarse food and water for every one a plan if SHTF happens a bug out bag or bug in bag. Here in Florida when it's hurricane season we keep cash on hand because when the electric goes out credit cards won't work in stores and ATM'S unless they have generators and the list can go on for ever.

Good call on the desiccant pouches. They are in almost every product you buy. I have saved every one for years and now have hundreds to use in my gun safe and ammo cans. I do have to disagree on the online purchase option. I find that online is the only way to go if buying in bulk. I suggest Bulkammo.com or Ammoseek as a good place to start. The exception is .22 rimfire, that I would buy local if you can find it. The other thing you need is a calculator so you can take price plus shipping and figure out a per round price. That way you can get a true cost compared to local stores.Good solid advice, thanks for the video.

Love the video... Have to disagree on the gun show vs retail factor. I work at a gun shop in Cincy Oh and our shop and goodman guns show usually have ammo for a lot cheaper. Walmart does have the best bottom prices I agree, but Bass Pro and Dicks are the worst when it comes to quality and price. Know what rounds should cost and then go from there. Thanks!

I live in Canada and my friend works at a gun store. He tells me a couple times a week people from the USA call and ask to buy like 30-50 thousand rounds! I didn't think that you need to start off with the disclaimer since we all know that the ammo shortage like the oil shortage of the 70's was BS. From what I've read with DHS buying up a crapload and ammo manufacturers restricted to what they can send out makes up for most of that.

Well for your info I have a AK-47 because I'm an American citizen and passed a background check and decided that my 2nd amendment rights give me a right to own one and no I don't have it to play Rambo I have it because I enjoy taking it to the range and shooting it and also it's for home defense to protect my self and my family because sometimes a shotgun or hand gun is not good enough.Not that you deserve a civilized answer but I decided I would show I'm a better man than you.

I figure I'll be taking a dirt nap by the time I'm 90 years old. Subtract my current age from 90, multiply that number by the daily or season bag limit of game, (squirrels, rabbits, pheasants, partridges, deer) then multiply that number by the number of season days for each game species, or by one in the case of one per season and I have a good idea of how much ammo to store. As I age, that total number gets smaller. Of course, they have no bag limits on zombies, so I'll keep a thousand rounds of 38 specials for them.

Desiccant causes corrosion and rust! The best way to store ammo would be in it's original packaging in a ammo vault with an electric dehumidifier in it. I personally can't afford that yet, so I vacuum seal my ammo and have had great luck so far.
@thetobaccoguy1751
@thetobaccoguy1751 8 жыл бұрын
+AdventureCayman That is only true if your desiccant has already absorbed moisture, and if you pack it directly against the ammunition. A desiccant pack thrown in a bucket or ammo can with factory boxed ammo will cause no harm. Been doing it for years.

+Hans “Hanzy4200” S. - Just because you have been doing something and it's worked out for you for "years" doesn't mean it's the proper way or will work out for you or others in the long term. I have been selling and servicing safes and vaults for 28 years now and know from REAL and a LOT of experience. I know the problems descants cause as people have paid me thousands of dollars to repair the damage caused to safes from descants, and the worst of it was the property they were trying to protect.
@thetobaccoguy1751
@thetobaccoguy1751 8 жыл бұрын
AdventureCayman Correct. And just because you have had certain experiences, doesn't mean that is the case for everyone. A safe and a ammo can are completely different animals. The only way a safe should have desiccant in it, is if it is in a self container rechargeable unit.

Don’t waste money not buying in bulk, work more spend less wait longer and buy for the cheapest price. Don’t waste money on anything other than the metal 30/50 cal ammo cans, make sure you check the seal and lubricate if need be. Take your ammo out of the boxes and into the metal ammo cans put in a few silica gel packets and store in a cool dry environment and you’re good. That ammunition will outlast you. That’s pretty much all the information you need it’s common sense really this video could be condensed to a few minutes.

Excellent video. Good guidance. Only one disagreement: I tend to find that local GUNSTORES are the biggest price gougers. Online in large orders is the best way to go; that offsets the shipping costs.....and online is often the only place to find a particular caliber/brand/grain that your looking for.

Lets say if nobody could find ammo ever again or it was 10 times more expensive than now. And say you shoot twice a month. And maybe 200 rounds each time. In about 5 monthe all your ammo would be gone. I guess for a shtf 1000 rounds each caliber would be ok. But the 1000 rounds stock. Is this ammo thats not being used or is being used. Because 1000 rounds can be gone in a blink of a eye. Just something I was thinking about. Thanks... awesome channel

"Blame those who are allowed to buy 1,000 rounds and resell it for 3-4 times as much" Really? I think that's called capitalism. It's everyone's responsibility to decide what they are willing to pay and how bad they want it. If Wal-Mart multiplied their price by 5 there might be some available for people who really need it instead of having the shortages like we do now..
