Love this. My mother on law is an amazing cook and baker. Many years later i was saying I wished i could make the amazing layered chocolate mousse gateux that she had served up at a big family function the day prior. Then she opened the pantry and showed me the first failed attempt. Felt so much better. Keep Sarah on, the singing/comedy act was hilarious.

OK, just to let you know that the reason the first two cakes were getting too brown on the top is because you turned the temperature up and the oven had to preheat again which means it was heating from the top and bottom heating elements. Oh, and by the way Story is just adorable!

your cakes turned out cute! fyi...a few tips...your cakes were burning because when you turned the oven temp up to 375, the oven was preheating from the top of the stove. Which is where the most heat was and burned the top of your cakes... next, a great cake release is equal parts oil, shortening, and flour. mix with mixer. it's wonderful. nothing will ever stick again. once your cake cools, it will slide out of the pan with ease. Also, crack your eggs into a dish first...i've lost so many egg shells in my batter...also, when you split the cake into two pieces, that's called 'torte" ....

Never fill bake tins more than haft the hight of the tin or less or the mixture risks to run over the edges and make a mess in your oven. Always bake them on low heat for a longer time rather than high heat for a short time, otherwise they will burn and still be sticky in the middle. If you put a stick in the cake to test if it’s done too early, then it can collapse entirely so don’t test until it’s almost ready. Read the instructions on the package if you use a cake mix or read the recipe if you make a mixture from scratch. I usually make cake mixture from scratch as it’s more common where I live, so I have less experience with cake mixes, but generally it’s important to follow recipes for the cakes to turn out as expected. 🌸🌸

If you let the cakes cool fully before you cut the tops off, they will not dry out as much. When you cut any baked good when it's hot, you let the steam escape which means the moisture is escaping.
