The bells of the City of York Minster. Part of a full peal.

Both York and Inveraray are the two most beautiful peals anywhere. Music to the ears and the resonance and harmonica coming off the back four in both towers lift my heart and mood. I was a ringer but my churches had only 4 bells and I never learned to change ring properly. It is an art in itself.

thank god for youtube. Even though I live in Sydney I can listen to Yorkminster when ever. These are the best sounding peal of bells in the world. I got to ring at Yorkminster in 2000 I would love to ring a peal of Stedman Cinques there given the opportunity. I realy love rhose heavy back bels and the way the trebles dance through them.

late reply :P but to answer your question, we weigh most peals of bells by the weight of the heaviest bell. Rounded, Exeter comes 2nd with a weight of 72cwt (3.5 tonnes) and liverpool anglican is up top at 81cwt (4 tonnes). London st pauls is 3rd at 61cwt (3 tonnes) and york here is 4th at 59cwt, just behind

I live in NZ. There aren't many bells over here, but the nearest ring of bells is at St. Peter's Cathedral in Hamilton - a ring of 8 with a 1 ton tenor. The only NZ ring with a clock attached which sounds the Westminster Chimes. They are nice bells but just pale in comparison with glorious sound made by York Minster!

it would be interesting to hear all 32 bells being rung at once though, dont you think. I went to York recently after coming back from amsterdam (look at me video), and i heard the 6 queen mother bells and great peter being rung. It was a gorgeous sound. I hope I can go and ring there one day... (*sighs*)

A peal of six of similar weight used to hang in my home tower but were replaced by a lighter eight. Stick with it. It's a marvelous musical and mathematical ocupation and as you improve, you will realise how "required" you will be, as well as how much you like it.

I think the submitter meant Great Peter which is the largest bourdon bell to be rung manually.

The tenor at York is not the heaviest bell rung in the country. Emmanuel at Liverpool is the heaviest bell rung full circle in a change ringing peal - not just in the country but in the world.

When you say 'heaviest bell still rung by hand' are you refering to Great Peter, which weighs in at about 10 tons?

Evening. We use the imperial way of weighing bells. This is known as hundredweights. As with kilograms you would say "29kg". In ndredweight you would phrase it as " The tenor at Glemsford is 14cwt and not 1400 weight. This is a mistake I made aswell. The bells are quite old at Glemsford. How well do they handle?

I think you may be referring to the clipped video I sometimes see. Video compressed to the middle of the screen. Most times I view this it is ok. The odd time .. no.. If anybody can help with this I would appreciate it. This footage was taken with a JVC GR-DVX An old model by todays standards with no digi output and a high gain on the analoge outputs via composite and svideo Im thinking of starting again and re-edit a lot of videos through a video/audio mixer I have.

If you search 'dove cccbr' in google, the top result is a website dedicated to church details (the ones with bells) including a ton of info about the bells, and even if the tower has toilets :P anyway, top right bar to search any tower

It's no longer a chime, its a carillon now. The first one in the uk for years and years. i'm sure someone more qualified than me will know when the last carillon was built in the uk.
